My Story

Like most great inventions, the advanced sleep system you are about to discover was born out of
necessity. As they say “the necessity is a mother of all inventions”.
Although I have always been an entrepreneur, engineer, inventor with (nine patented inventions) and
designer by trade. I also played professional football for several years. It was during a game of football
that I was knocked out and taken to hospital after a particularly rough tackle. Fortunately, I didn’t
break my back, but I did end up with a slipped disk.
It was around this time that I began to appreciate the importance of a good night’s sleep. Although I
went to a great many physiotherapists and osteopaths in an attempt to cure my back pain, these only
offered short-term solutions and the pain would often return before I’d even arrived home after a
session! As a result, I struggled to sleep each night, because I was constantly tossing and turning in a
futile attempt to find a comfortable, pain-free position to sleep in. Although painkillers helped,
however as soon as I rolled onto my side, I was in agony. Every morning I would wake up feeling tired
and worn out, having barely enjoyed any quality sleep.
This began to take such a severe toll on my overall quality of life that my doctors eventually proposed
fusing my vertebrae; a dangerous operation that I wasn’t keen to try. Still convinced a solution could be
found, I decided to tackle the problem myself. I immediately threw myself into a period of extensive
research in an attempt to pinpoint exactly what was hindering a cure for my back pain and preventing
me from sleeping.
What I found was a revelation.
I realised that many of us are sleeping incorrectly the majority of the time without even realising it.
Worse, existing approaches to improving our quality of sleep just didn’t go far enough, so anyone
experiencing problems similar to my back pain would only ever see short-term benefits unless an
alternative was found, and so the ORO Advanced Sleep System was born – the next stage of sleep
technology that I was immediately keen to share with the world!

On standard mattresses, once you stop sinking into the mattress, your body weight will
still be pressing on your shoulder creating a “dead” or “frozen shoulder”, and the
shoulders will always be in the way so that the neck and spine cannot be aligned,
causing headaches, back and neck pains.
By incorporating our unique patented Pressure Relief Comfort Recess at the top of

How the ORO Mattress is made
There are many companies offering memory foam mattresses and similar products that
are marketed as foolproof cures for back pain and related problems. However, while
such products can indeed help, they are far from the perfect solution.
The reason is simple, though comfort materials such as memory foam offer better
support
than traditional mattresses, they do not solve the basic issue of your shoulder position!
You must move the shoulder “out of the way” so that the spine and neck can be aligned
in the correct and most comfortable posture. This solution is only offered by the ORO’s
unique Pressure Relief Comfort Recess design.
From the very beginning, we have been manufacturing our mattresses using
Polyurethane and Memory foams until during internet research, we came across an

to the dangers of chemicals which are used to manufacture Polyurethane and Memory
foams
A common complaint about Memory foam mattresses is that they contain toxic
chemicals used in the manufacturing process and especially using the flame retardant
chemicals which are based on pesticides. There are hundreds of types of FR
chemicals. Brominated, Halogenated, Chlorinated, PBDEs, HBCD,s etc.
Many of the FRs toxic Chemicals used in mattresses and furniture are associated with
adverse health impacts including hyperactivity, poorer neurodevelopment, and lower
IQ, hormone disruption, fertility problems and cancer ( including thyroid and breast
cancer). Banned fire retardants have recently been discovered in umbilical cord
blood. We have no clear idea of how they might affect the development and future
health of foetuses. But we know that they are persistent, accumulative and associated
with cancer and disruption of the hormonal and reproductive system.
For this reason, we have replaced all our memory foam mattresses with 100% Latex
Foam which have many advantages over memory foam.

100% LATEX
Many people are surprised at the concept of a latex mattress, but latex possesses a variety
of benefits that make it ideal for this purpose.
First of all, all latex mattresses are made with natural latex derived from the sap of the
rubber tree. Latex mattresses feature natural, biodegradable ingredients that come from
renewable resources and water-based raw materials, including natural latex, air, and water.
Latex is a truly green and environmentally friendly product that does not contain any of the
solvents and toxic chemicals that can be found in memory foam mattresses.
Furthermore, the manufacturing process does not damage the ozone layer; the rubber trees
have up to 25 years of productive life and a strong positive effect on the environment, as
they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reduce emissions.
Latex is up to 20 times more durable than standard polyurethane foams. The strength of the
latex material allows the manufacturers to offer strong guarantees for their products and
assures maximum value for consumers. This means they represent an excellent long-term
investment and won’t require any upkeep, other than occasionally airing, to keep them
fresh.
A latex mattress can last as long as twenty years, compared to conventional spring-based
mattresses, which generally need to be replaced every 5-7 years or so (or even more
frequently in the case of cheap mattresses).
For our mattress covers fabric we are using HEKLA Crib 5 quality which is inherent FR
without any chemical FR treatment and therefore permanent FR and washable at 60
degrees Celsius).

What are Dunlop and Talalay Latex?
Dunlop and Talalay are two methods for manufacturing the latex foam used in bedding.
Dunlop is the standard technology, developed in 1929, while Talalay is a relatively new method
which is more complex, costly and time-consuming.
Both methods use natural latex and can produce latex mattresses in any of the three blends
described above. The production process always starts with mixing liquid latex with water. There
are small amounts of other materials required for processing liquid latex into a solid form, which is
necessary for all latex production. These are natural soaps, sulphur, and gelling and vulcanization
agents. When the latex mixture is ready, compressed air is used to make foam. The foam is then
poured into a mould, after which the vulcanization process begins. The latex foam is vulcanized at
a temperature of over 110 degrees for about 50 minutes. The finished mattress core is then taken
out of the mould, washed and dried.
The key difference in processing in the Dunlop and Talalay methods is the two additional steps in
the Talalay technology – vacuum and freeze. When the mould is filled with the latex mixture and
then closed, the pressure inside is reduced to create a vacuum, which lowers the air pressure in
the mould cavity while increasing the air pressure in the foam bubbles. As a result, the foam
expands and fills the mould evenly and the pressure inside the bubbles is driven to equalize over
the entire latex block, leading to a very uniform density. The water in the latex foam is then frozen
and carbon dioxide is injected. The freezing prevents the latex particles from settling at the bottom
and transforming into a solid product. This means that the finished Talalay latex mattress has a
very consistent density and from top to bottom. Because there is no freezing stage in the Dunlop
process, the rubber particles settle in the bottom of the mattress while the liquid latex is gelling into
its solid form and so there could be slight differences in the feel and the firmness of the two sides of
a Dunlop latex mattress. Although the Talalay process takes four times longer and consumes five
times more energy than the Dunlop process, the two additional process steps improve the feel,
quality and consistency of the finished latex, but at high additional cost and also with a much bigger
carbon footprint.

Latex has a great point elasticity meaning it compresses only in the point of contact.
As a bonus, this means that two people can share a bed without disturbing each other
when they move in the night, even if one partner is heavier than the other. It doesn’t
squeak either, so there’s minimal chance of one of you waking the other up if you need
to get up in the middle of the night! As well as being very elastic, latex is incredibly
durable. A latex mattress can last as long as twenty years, compared to conventional
spring-based mattresses, which generally need to be replaced every 3-5 years or so
(or even more frequently in the case of cheap mattresses).
One of the main concerns with bedding today is being too hot when we sleep; it is
uncomfortable and interrupts the quality of our sleep. Fortunately, the open cell
structure of latex mattresses means that they are highly ‘breathable’ – they don’t retain
heat in the same way other designs do, as the air inside them can circulate freely.

What is 100% Mulberry Silk?
Mulberry Silk is produced by silkworms that feed on mulberry leaves. The silkworms spin their cocoons
which are then used as silk in silk products. Mulberry Silk is the best silk you can buy for textile
purposes..100% means that the fabric only consists of Mulberry silk. This is important because some
companies will blend mulberry silk with cheaper silks to make a more inferior product. Mulberry silk is
incredibly soft and durable.
What Does 6A, 22-Momme, 100% Mulberry Silk Mean?

Silk is graded on an A, B, and C scale. Each letter referencing a different type of silk product
quality. A being the finest, highest quality silk product and C being the lowest. The Number takes
the grading and makes it a step further. For instance, you could have 3A, 5A, or 6A. 6A being the
highest. So when you see a silk product that is graded 6A, you can be sure that that is the highest
quality of that specific type of silk that you can buy.
What is 22-Momme?
Momme is a unit of measurement, much like thread count in Cotton. You can’t use thread count for
Silk, however, because the silk fibres of Silk are much thinner in diameter than that of cotton so you
can easily reach a high number for a thread count. That’s why momme is used instead. Momme
describes the silk’s weight and density. Higher momme means there are more strands
silk per 100 yards of fabric, therefore making the product heavier. So if they weigh that fabric, and
say it’s 19 pounds, the momme would be 19-momme The higher the momme higher quality and
more durable the fabric is. Momme can range anywhere from 11-momme to 25-momme. The
higher the better? For the most part. 19-momme while higher than 11-momme is still considered
“lower quality” while 25-Momme is much too heavy for clothes or bedding and is usually used for
decor like curtains. 22-Momme is a perfect balance and is what you should look for if you’re looking
for silk bedding or clothes.

Fabric for the Mattress Cover
We have achieved FR for Latex foam to comply with British regulation BS 5852
without using any harmful toxic chemicals. In the case of fabric for mattress covers,
they must be compliant with BS 7177 low hazard for domestic use. This is to ensure
that the fabric for mattress covers are fire resistant to a cigarette or smoulder test. In
our case, we have achieved not only BS 7177 but also crib 5, which is required for
ORO Latex Mattresses for Hotel Division. We have achieved all this without using FR
Toxic Chemicals. This will enable us to offer all our customers the most comfortable
and Chemical-free Latex mattresses. We have also incorporated two unique
treatments of the fabric used for the manufacture of mattress covers.
COPPERCLEAN:
Excessive virus outbreaks and global pandemics can occur at any time, at any place. It is thus of
importance to take precautions to not only ensure everyone’s safety but also to prevent
infrastructures like hospitals from failing due to demand exceeding capacity. Following the growing
awareness during the current COVID 19 pandemic, LAVA developed COPPERCLEAN, where a
supplemental yarn of micro-thin metallized copper is knitted into our fabrics. Copper is a known
material that combines viral reducing, antibacterial and fungicidal properties for ultimate protection
on bacteria or viruses of all kind. Recently, various studies showed promising results regarding
effectivity against the SARS-CoV-2 virus as well. These promising results are now confirmed by an
independent study on LAVA mattress fabrics. Results showed a decline in viral activity on LAVA
fabric of 97.13% after 2hours of contact time with the Feline Coronavirus (same family of SARS-
COV-2 coronavirus). Half-life (point were only 50% of viruses is still active) is reached much faster,
leading to less chance of virus spreading and contamination.
Besides, the COPPERCLEAN yarn has shown a bacteriostatic reduction rate of 99.9% on different
bacteria according to KS K 0693 (2016) testing method. Greatly reducing the risk of a secondary
bacterial infection which is a common complication of viral disease such as COVID19. Thus, knitting
with the COPPERCLEAN yarn allows us to add inherent antibacterial, viral reducing and fungicidal
properties to the fabric that will never wash out. Furthermore, COPPERCLEAN fabrics do not need
any additional chemical treatment to achieve this and can be washed at lower temperatures with
milder soaps.

“Ms B is a lady in her thirties with a pronounced Kyphoscoliosis and other disabilities. In the past,
she has used a high/low bed with a Spenco Mattress and various pillows to encourage her to
remain on her side-lying. She was often very hot and appeared to be uncomfortable after a short
time, becoming very tense around her neck and shoulders.
“To limit the progression of her Kyphoscoliosis and stretch her spine and limbs, Ms B spends time
in prone kneeling over a wedge. We hoped to replicate this stretched position on her side in bed
but had been unsuccessful.
