(Level 3)
This 17-week full time programme provides students with the skills, knowledge and attributes required to
maintain the welfare of animals (specifically cats, dogs and rabbits) in a range of animal care roles in the
companion animal sector. Students will learn about animal handling techniques, health and husbandry,
hygiene and more.

Gradutes could be employed in a range of businesses associated with the care of animals:

                                    Trimester 2 offering: July 2021
    Hours on Campus                 9:30am-3:30pm, Monday-Friday during theory weeks
                                    Work experience days will be confirmed early in the programme
    Learning Mode                   This programme is delivered by blended learning i.e. face to face and online
                                    learning. This means some of your lessons may be delivered via Moodle
                                    (our online learning platform), which will require you to have a computer and
                                    internet access at home. Students will also need to be able to study from
                                    home should Covid-19 Alert Levels change.
    Programme Fee                   2021 fees will be on the Animal Care pages on the WelTec website from
                                    October; as a guide, the 2020 fees were $3,351.00. These fees apply to NZ
                                    Citizens & Permanent Residents only.

Programme Content

 AS3001 (15 credits)                      To enable students to demonstrate understanding of:
 Animal Welfare and Hygiene               • animal welfare legislation, and codes of practice for companion
                                             animals
                                          • ethical principles and cultural perspectives related to working with
                                             animals
                                          • animal facility and environmental hygiene, and zoonoses.
 AC3002 (15 credits)                      To enable students to demonstrate and apply knowledge of companion
 Animal Health and Behaviour              animal health and behaviour in routine and emergency situations in an
                                          animal facility.
 AC3003 (15 credits)                      To enable students to handle and transport companion animals safely
 Animal Handling                          within and to an animal facility.
 AC3004 (25 credits)        To enable students to demonstrate and use knowledge and skills
 Animal Anatomy, Physiology essential for maintaining companion animals in an animal facility in a
 and Husbandry              positive state of welfare.

Theory
To succeed in this programme, you will need to attend all scheduled on-campus classes, complete all your
work experience hours and complete your self-directed learning (most of which is online on Moodle).

The programme is largely classroom based, with theory to support practical application. You will be
involved in practical lessons as well as regular self-directed learning, including group work, where you will
undertake a variety of tasks such as research projects and case studies.

Work Experience
Students must attend, arrange and complete 40 hours of off-
campus work experience in an animal care facility. Animal
care facilities may include catteries, kennels, doggy day
cares animal rescue facilities and animal control. Please
note, vet clinics are not suitable. Students will be advised
which is their work experience day early in the programme.
Please note if your work experience day falls on a Public
Holiday, you will be required to attend.

You will need to arrange your own placement travel to and
from your work experience; we encourage students to
carpool if possible.

Please note that even though the work is enjoyable, some
students may find some situations emotionally distressing, such as animals that have been abused, are
injured or sick, or require euthanasia.

Student Support
At WelTec, we are committed to our students' success and therefore offer a range of services to meet the
learning needs of individual students. These include Learning Support Services, where one-to-one and
small group assistance, peer tutoring, workshops and study skills sessions on a variety of topics, and online
material are available.

To increase our students' chances of success, we provide support for our students in other ways such as
financial advice, counselling, childcare facilities, and a service for students who have a disability, illness,
or health problems that may interfere with their studies.

Māori and Pacific Engagement Advisors are available to provide pastoral care for Māori and Pacific
students, and information on alternative support networks and grants.

Some students may struggle with the reading, writing and mathematical elements of the programme. We
have an Engagement Advisors team that can aid students who are finding these aspects challenging. It
is best if we can identify the need for this support before you commence studying. As part of your
application process you may be asked to come in for a learning conversation to assess whether you are
study ready. You could be advised of alternative pathways to reach your goals.

Foundation Studies
WelTec and Whitireia offer a choice of programmes to assist you to gain skills and knowledge in
preparation for a variety of education or employment pathways. Programmes are offered at different
levels, to provide you with a pathway suitable to your background. Within the programmes, different
strands are also available to support you to go onto further education or employment in a specific field.

This programme is approved for Student Loans and Allowances through StudyLink. You can use the

Entry Requirements
NCEA Level 1 or equivalent gained through tertiary study or relevant personal, practical, professional
and/or educational experience, including literacy and numeracy competence equivalent to that specified
above.

International Students
Minimum IELTS (academic) score of 5.0 with no band lower than 5.0, or equivalent.

Other
All students are required to undergo a police check at the time of entry into the programme. In the event
of an adverse police report, entry into the programme will be at the discretion of the Head of School.
