RESEARCH LINE STATEMENT: HappY Youth
The role of digital media in the socio-emotional lives of tweens, teens and emerging
adults is at the heart of my research. In a hyperconnected world where media and technology are
ubiquitous, it will be vital to understand how young people shape and are shaped by the digital
society. I want to address how media and technology can contribute to positive youth
development, in a way that the opportunities outweigh the risks. For this we need theoretical
models that reflect specifically on the unique – sometimes hidden – affordances of digital media,
while at the same time acknowledging individual differences in susceptibility to the influence of
these affordances. To answer these questions, my research includes cross-sectional, longitudinal,
and experimental studies, and when necessary digital methods to more accurately capture the
interplay between technology and socio-emotional functioning.
