Dear Friends & Fellow Deer Farmers,
It gives us pleasure to present our 2020 sire sale catalogue.
We are very pleased with the selection of two and three year
old velvet and trophy sires, as well as the quality line up of two
year old high growth rate venison sires we have on offer. The
three year old stags are currently residing on our Clinton farm
and will be transported to Outram on sale day. We will also
be offering a selection of yearling hinds at our sale. Details of
these and photographs of sale animals will also be available
at blackforest.nz, and on our Facebook page – facebook.com/
blackforest.nz. As at the time of catalogue production the animals are still developing
and while we are very pleased with how they are coming along we do expect to make
some changes to the line up. Inclusions and exclusions will also be posted online.
Our sale deer are produced from our fully recorded herd of 850 hinds. We carry all male
progeny on the studs’ home property at Outram until yearlings, and retain 250 rising
two year old stags from which we make our selections for potential industry sires
and replacements for our own commercial herd. The three year old stags wintered
in a mob of 140 on the Clinton farm and were selected out of that mob at velvetting
time. Farmers can buy with the confidence in knowing these stags have been born and
raised in a commercial environment and have been selected with intense selection
pressure.
Our aim is to be breeding and offering stags with clean, heavy, correct, traditional
velvet heads that go on to push out to be fantastic trophies. Most of the velvet and
trophy bred stags catalogued would have cut well over 4kg of tidy velvet as two year
olds. Those animals will certainly go on under good management to cut at maturity
8kg -9kg of velvet.
These stags will also produce outstanding long wide trophies at maturity too when
grown out – our commercial herd continues to produce the industry’s finest line of
trophies every year.
All of the animals offered for sale will be tested for Johnes disease pre sale and will be
pre movement Tb tested as is required. Both our properties have a Tb herd status of
C10.
We are confident you will be successful in selecting fine young Sires to enhance the
future direction and profitability of your herd and wish you luck with your purchases.
We welcome any pre-sale enquires and will be happy to show you the line-up.
We are very pleased to be holding our sale in the afternoon on the 14th, and will be
offering snacks and refreshments pre-sale and a bbq meal afterwards. We are looking
forward once again to catching up with friends, clients and new clients alike on sale
day and hope you will be able to take the time to relax and enjoy our hospitality and
refreshments after the sale.

Vendor Sale Conditions 2020
1. Black Forest Park retains a third party marketing condition on semen for the
CONDITIONS OF SALE
Lots offered in our 2020 Sire catalogue for a period of 4yrs transferable should
the stag be sold within that period.
2. No animals, embryos or semen sold by Black Forest Park, or their germplasm, any
subsequent progeny or germplasm, including the semen and germplasm of that
progeny may be supplied to a third party without the written permission of the
stud.
3. This condition does not affect normal commercial deer farming or stud farming
or the normal sales of semen or embryos as it only applies to entities with the
primary function of commercial semen/germplasm activities.
4. It is a condition of sale of any animals, embryos, germplasm or semen sold by
Black Forest Park, that the purchaser agrees to include the following clause
as a condition of any subsequent sale or gift of any animal, embryo, semen,
germplasm or subsequent progeny or germplasm to a third party - “the
purchaser acknowledges that it will not supply any animals, embryos, semen or
germplasm to any commercial semen/germplasm marketing or sales entity, and
will ensure that this clause is inserted as a condition of any sale or gift of any
animals, embryos, semen or germplasm.”
5. The sale will be conducted by PGG Wrightson with the conditions of sale as set
down by the Stock & Station Agents Association, a copy of which is exhibited in
the office on sale day.
6. The deer are the purchaser’s property and risk at the fall of the hammer.
7. Warranties and Insurance are covered under separate headings.
8. Terms are strictly cash unless prior arrangements are made with the
auctioneers. Accounts not paid within 14 days of sale shall bear interest, at
current rate per annum from the date of sale.
9. The sale is conducted exclusive of GST.
10. Overriding commission is payable to non-participating companies and
recognised independent agents introducing and accompanying purchasers to
the sale providing prior arrangements are made with PGG Wrightson.
11. Sale animals in velvet will have velvet removed after the sale, which will remain
the property of the vendor.
12. Intending purchasers are required to register with the auctioneers prior to the
commencement of the sale.
13. Breed values represented are current as of 11 December 2019.

CA RE OF N E W YOUNG STAGS
For new deer farmers or farmers purchasing a
new sire for the first time, we offer the following
suggestions for the care and management of new
and existing Sire Stags.
Remember your Sire Stags are the future of
your herd, they carry the genetics for the future
quality and production of your herd. Good stags
are worth looking after!
Arrival of new stags
As deer develop strong social structures in their
groups there can be a degree of stress involved
in taking young stags from their mobs and
transporting them to a new property and herd.
However this can be minimised with a little understanding and common sense.
Stags should be selected early and shifted to your property before the end of
January if at all possible, to allow time to settle and adjust prior to the rut. Ideally
the stag should be introduced to a small group of say 15 stags of his own age as soon
as he arrives - this should be done in the yards rather than let the new stag out by
himself (new stags should never be left in the yards by themselves). Alternatively
the stag could be put with hinds, but young stags should not be put in with older
groups of Stags or Spikers. This method will minimise stress & assist the stag to
settle quickly in his new environment.
Mating Stags
Out with hinds for single sire mating by 10th March or if using Eastern Stags by
the 1st of March to take advantage of their potential early mating and calving
characteristics.
2yr stags should easily mate 25-30 hinds, 3yr stags 40 hinds, older stags approx 50
hinds.
A stag can often mate more hinds than this, but this may increase calving spread
and body weight loss with a marked loss of production performance from the stag.
Mating mobs should always have a paddock between and yearling hinds should
always be mated separately.
If using backup sires these should go out after two cycles or 36 days and the original
sires go to their own separate paddock.
Stags out
Approx 10th May take stags out from the hinds one at a time and put to their
separate Sires’ paddock with good saved grass. Start with the dominant Sire first
and work down to the youngest. This procedure helps minimise fighting and bullying
of the younger stags.
Maintenance
Sire stags should be regarded as at least six stock units and well supplemented with
high energy feed over winter, especially in the south.
A good level of care will help ensure the owner is rewarded with fit, healthy stags
