HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY! – Today we wish all our mothers a Happy Mother’s Day. May the Lord bless each of
them for their generous vocation. Our Mothers’ Day Novena begins tomorrow. If you would like to enroll your
mother, sister, Godmother, etc. (living or deceased) in the Novena of Masses, please stop by the little store in the
back of the church today for the enrollment envelope. Today is the last day to enroll.

SUMMER ACADEMY! – Once again, this year, our Parish School will be offering Summer School. This is a
wonderful opportunity for parents to be able to take advantage of additional instruction of their children during
the summer months. There will also be child-care available after school. Enrollment is open to all children
regardless of what school they currently attend. This year summer school is particularly important as so many
children have lost a lot of learning time due to the pandemic. This is an opportunity to catch up! Please register
as soon as possible since space is limited. Please contact the school office at (626)796-7697.

OPEN ENROLLMENT – This is also the time of year in which our Parish School holds open enrollment for new
students. St. Andrew School provides the finest Catholic education in our community. If you are interested in
enrolling your child, please stop by the school office as soon as possible as spaces are very limited.

FIRST COMMUNIONS – Yesterday the 2nd graders from our Parish School received their First Holy
Communion. Next Saturday children from our Religious Education Program will celebrate their First Holy
Communion at 2 separate Masses (9:30am & 11:30am). Everyone is invited to join in this celebration. Further
First Communions will be held later this month. Congratulations to all of them!

CONFIRMATION MASS – Next Saturday, May 22nd, His Excellency, Bishop David O'Connell, Auxiliary Bishop
of Los Angeles, will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to our teenagers as well as several adults. Most of
them have been preparing for this day for the past two years. This week they will be receiving the Sacrament of
Penance in preparation for Confirmation. Please pray for them as they are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Please pray for them throughout this week as they prepare for the reception of this
important Sacrament. You are invited to attend this special Parish celebration.

CARDINAL MC INTYRE FUND FOR CHARITY – Next weekend, throughout the Archdiocese, a special
collection is taken up for this charitable fund. This charity is unique to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. It
was established many years ago by the late Cardinal James Francis Mc Intyre to assist parishes in meeting the
emergency needs of parishioners. The funds from this charity assist in emergency shelter, medicine, utilities,
rent, etc. Each parish is allotted $5,000 per year for a variety of emergency charitable needs. Our parish uses
these funds regularly to assist in emergencies. Thank you for your generosity to this fund.

THE LAST PART OF OUR LIGHTING PROJECT IS NOW SCHEDULED – I received word last week that
the light fixtures for illuminating the beautiful mural of the life of St. Andrew above our altar are now ready.
Scaffolding will be required for this so that will take place the week of May 24-28, Monday through Friday. We
will still have our regular Mass schedule and will simply work around the scaffolding in the sanctuary. The work
will be finished prior to the weekend Masses.

WE'VE BEEN FEATURED AGAIN! – The May/June issue of Pasadena Magazine has two pages dedicated to
"Architecture and History Buffs" and St. Andrew Church is featured with beautiful pictures. I'm delighted that
our treasure can be shared with others!

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR:
Sixth Sunday of Easter
May 9, 2021

Vocem iucunditatis annuntiate, et audiatur, alleluia: nuntiate usque ad extremum terræ: liberavit Dominus populum
suum, alleluia, alleluia.
Ps. Iubilate Deo omnis terra: psalmum dicite nomini eius, date gloriam laudi eius.

With a joyful voice, announce this, and let it be heard, alleluia: make it known to the ends of the earth: The Lord has
liberated his people, alleluia, alleluia. (Is. 48:20)
Psalm verse: Rejoice in God, all the earth: sing psalms to his name, give him glorious praise. (Ps. 66:1)

“With a voice rejoicing, announce and let it be heard, alleluia: proclaim to the ends of the earth: our Lord has
liberated his people, alleluia!” In today’s Introit, the Church rejoices in her liberation from eternal death through
the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of her Lord and Savior. In this Easter season, we join our hearts in the great
hymn of gratitude and joy in our salvation. But what is this thing, “Introit”?

The word Introit derives from the Latin word introitus, or “entering.” It is the Proper that is attached to the entrance
of the ministers into the sanctuary. What is a Proper? A Proper is the sung part of the Mass whose text is proper in
the sense of “specific” (we see this reflected in the English word “appropriate”). The text of the Propers change for
each liturgical day; that is, there is a different text for every day of the year. The Introit is a Proper of the Mass that
we often sing in its original chant setting in Latin. Many of these settings are 1,200 years old.

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal governs the celebration of the entire Mass, including the sung
parts. Last week we introduced the idea of Propers and of the Ordinary. This week, we begin to explore the riches
of the General Instruction as it pertains to the parts of the Mass, which is found in Chapter II, The Structure of the
Mass, Its Elements, and Its Parts. This can be read online at www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/general-
instruction-of-the-roman-missal/girm-chapter-2.cfm. (Hint: you can copy and paste this link from the PDF into
your browser’s address bar.)

At the beginning of this chapter, we read paragraphs 27 and 28 (see the link above for the full text). Since
we are now exploring the structure of the Mass, we focus on paragraph 28 (paragraph 27 will be covered when we
come to Communion): “28. The Mass consists in some sense of two parts, namely the Liturgy of the Word and
the Liturgy of the Eucharist, these being so closely interconnected that they form but one single act of worship.
For in the Mass is spread the table both of God’s Word and of the Body of Christ, and from it the faithful are to be
instructed and refreshed. There are also certain rites that open and conclude the celebration.”

The Mass can be understood, then, as two complimentary parts, each integral to the other, which comprises
various smaller acts of worship. In addition to the main division of the Mass into the Liturgy of the Word and the
Liturgy of the Eucharist, we discern two smaller rites, or series of prayers, at the beginning and at the end of Mass:
the Entrance Rite begins the Mass and disposes the congregation and ministers to proper attitude in preparation
for the Eucharist; and the Communion Rite, at the end of the Mass, comprising the immediate preparation for and
the reception of Holy Communion. In the coming weeks, we will explore each of these sections in detail. Next
week, we will break open what the General Instruction has to say about singing in paragraphs 39 – 41.

Sixth Sunday of Easter Sexto Domingo de Pascua

worship/the-mass/general-instruction-of-the-roman-missal/girm-chapter-2.cfm.
