Good Reason to Eat in Season
SEAI One Good Idea - Cork Regional Final
On February 24th the pupils of Sneem National School
made the long journey to Cork for the Regional Final of
the SEAI One Good Idea Competition. The team accompanied by their support-
ers had an early start and made their way to The Omniplex Cinema at the Ma-
hon Point Shopping Centre. A total of 5 schools f rom Kerry, Cork and Laois
pitched their idea to a panel of judges. The Seasonal
Superheroes, Grace Casey, Dylan McGiff, Tom
Clifford, Óighe Burns and Sarah Bradshaw impressed
the panel of judges with their excellent 4 minute
presentation. Their presentation f ocused on their task
which is to encourage people to shop and eat in sea-
son produce. The tension was palpable as the MC
took to the stage to announce the winner. Exhilaration
and elation were the obvious emotions as the Season-
al Superheroes were crowned the Cork Regional Win-
ners. The team will now go forward to the National
Final in Dublin on the 23rd April. The team and pupils
in the school are very excited and busily preparing f or
the f inal. The pupils are also planning to resurrect the
local market where locals will sell locally grown vege-
tables and f ruit. We welcome your support and encourage you to consider shop-
ping and eating in season produce. As the Seasonal Superheroes would say,
it’s good for your health, the environment and our local economy. Please follow
us on Facebook, SNEEMNS-GOODREASONTOEA TINSEASON and on twitter
at @sneemns to keep up to date with our exciting plans and progress.
  School Orchard
We are currently planning to create our own apple orchard in the school
grounds. In addition to nutritional benef its, orchards reduce pollution, take up
carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, provide habitat for wildlif e, hold water and re-
duce soil erosion. An orchard is a place where people and the rest of nature
successf ully work together to create abundant harvests, providing f resh f ruit
  within our locality.
  Gardening
The Junior Room were delighted to be a part of our campaign by growing some
in-season produce with the Senior Room. We planted peas, carrots and some
cress. We will soon be starting a garden-
ing club in our school where we will be
  growing some more in-season produce.
The plan is for each classroom to have
their own section to grow f ruit and vegeta-
bles. If anyone would like to get involved
and help us out with any of our initiatives
we would be delighted to hear f rom you!

Tahilla Community National School
  Partnership Schools Ireland
Tahilla CNS became the f irst school in Kerry to participate in the Partnership
Schools Ireland programme. In December a Partnership Team at Tahilla CNS
was creat ed consisting of two staff members, two parents, two representatives
f rom the wider community and three students. The t eam received training and
developed a yearly action plan with four specif ic goals; two curriculum based,
one behavioural and one to improve the welcoming climate in the school. The
focus of the Partnership Team in January was the c urriculum goal of ‘improving
the children’s involvement in real lif e maths’. It was decided that the children
would plan and prepare a St. Brigid’s Cross and Cake Sale in the local Super-
Valu in Kenmare in order to raise money f or charity. Details below… Partner-
ship Schools Ireland is a joint initiative by National Parents Council Primary
(NP C), the Irish Primary P rincipals' Network and the Department of Education
and Skills. Its aim is to improve children’s educational outcomes by increasing
parental engagement and creating eff ective partnerships between schools, their
students, parents and the wider community.
St Brigid’s Crosses and Cake Sale
The school held a ‘St.Brigid’s Cross Making Work-
shop’ on Friday 24th January. This was a huge suc-
cess producing over 60 crosses made by grandpar-
ents, parents, past pupils, teachers, students and
many others f rom the local community. Thank you to
everyone who hand -picked rushes, shared their
cross-making skills or who simply just came along f or
  a cup of tea.
The f ollowing week the children had a busy day bak-
ing. They baked rocky road, f airy cakes, rice krispie
buns and gluten f ree brownies. After examining the
costings for their produce they priced the cakes and
crosses accordingly and made price tags and labels
to be displayed outside SuperValu. We are delighted
  to announce that the
  children raised €218.
  We are donating half
  the money to Cork Si-
  mon Community to re-
f lect the work of St.
  Brigid. The other half
  will be going to KLAWS
as a thank you for tak-
ing in and caring f or a
stray cat we f ound in
  our school.

Shopping in SuperValu
On the day the children were given a shopping list and budget of €4. Their chal-
lenge was to buy the items on the list within the budget given. The children had
great f un searching through the aisles, comparing prices and using the self-
service tills to buy their items. Thankf ully they all kept within budget! The day
was a huge success, not only were the children engaging in a great cause but
they were learning all about maths in real-lif e situations. From the baking, pricing
and selling the children were engaging in diff erent areas of the maths curricu-
lum: weight, capacity, money, addition and subtraction to name but a f ew. They
had some very happy customers. Thank you to everyone who supported their
stall on the day.
One Good Idea Competition
Since September the children at Tahilla CNS have been working on the SEAI
One Good Idea Competition. Two teams entered the competition and both pro-
gressed to the Regional Finals in the Omniplex Cinema in Cork on Monday the
24th of February. Both teams created a one-minut e f ilm to promote a simple
idea which helps save energy and takes climate action. Team ‘Lego Lif e Savers’
were promoting ‘Walk on Wednesdays’ while Team ‘Climate Change Kids’ were
promoting ‘One Hour Free From Power’.
Both were super innovative ideas which have
been put in place in Tahilla CNS in an ef fort
to save as much energy as possible. On the
day the children’s f ilm was displayed on the
cinema screen, they delivered a presentation
pitch to the audience and were then ques-
tioned by a panel of judges. We are delight-
ed to announce that ‘Team Lego Lif e Savers’
came in second place on the day! We would
like to congratulate our neighbouring school,
St. Michael’s National School in Sneem, for
coming in first place and progressing to the
National Finals in Dublin. Comhgairdeachas
libh! It is great to see that the children of
Sneem and the Greater Kenmare area are
making huge efforts to help take climate action.
Teacher-Artist Partnership
As part of the TAP (Teacher-Artist Partnership), teacher Karen Lawlor and artist
Silke Michels worked together with the children to create some amazing work!
The children enjoy the outdoors so we decided on using some natural materials
for our project. The children loved the idea of making mandalas using twigs,
leaves and other natural materials f rom our beautif ul school surroundings. We
ended up with some wonderf ul mandalas on individual wooden discs. The chil-
dren now hav e great plans as to where these will be placed in our school garden
and how we can add some other aspects to make a sensory outdoor space.

                                                                            Page 9

Kenmare and District Gardening Club
The f irst meeting of 2020 was held in the usual place, the Gateway, Kenmare. We
welcomed Kevin Begley of Coolwater Garden, Co. Limerick who gave us an en-
tertaining talk entitled ‘Goodbye Lawn. Hello Pond’. He demonstrated how he
transf ormed his garden f rom a standard garden of large lawn and f ruit trees on
one side to a phenomenal ninety foot natural looking pond – what an idea! In con-
trast, the f ront garden was formalised with crazy paving sandstone, hand laid on
earth, but interspersed with more water f eatures and colourf ul exotic planting with-
out the use of perennials. The talk followed the progression of endless innovative
ideas: pergolas, troughs of alpines (70 in all), exotic planting under glazing, wood-
en structures – even a smokers’ canopy f rom a local pub! – many of the items
acquired through recycle , liquidation sales and f riendly Limerick f armers (!) to be
adapted to create a superb whole. The club cannot wait to pay a visit!

This was followed by the A.G.M. After reports by the treasurer and secretary, the
new committee was elected. The hard work and dedication of those retiring was
appreciated by the club. The chairperson encouraged the members to open their
gardens and looked forward to hearing suggestions for lectures. Stephen Austen
brief ly outlined the forthcoming annual trip, which this year will be to the south
east region. Members interested in opening their gardens at the Bank Holiday
week end to create a local garden trail were asked to notify Neil Cahill.

The next meeting is at 7.30 p.m., Thursday, March 7th in the Gateway. Coffee
and welcome from 7.00p.m. The talk will be given by Neil Porteus, Head gar-
dener of the National Trust Property , Mount Stewart, Co. Down. He will talk about
Annesgrove Gardens, Castletownroche, which he has been renovating whilst they
were closed to the public and which the club will be visiting in June.

                                                                        Page 17
