AN ORDINANCE
To authorise withdrawals from South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands funds of
money for use during 2021; and for connected purposes.
ENACTED by the Commissioner of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands ––
1. Title
This Ordinance is the Appropriation Ordinance 2021.
2. Commencement
This Ordinance comes into force on publication in the Gazette.
3. Appropriation of £11,478,650 for 2021
(1) The Financial Secretary may withdraw sums of up to £11,478,650 in total from South
Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands funds, for use during the financial year 1 January to
31 December 2021.
(2) Any sums withdrawn under subsection (1) may be applied during 2021 in accordance
with the Schedule.
4. Retrospective authority for pre-commencement withdrawals
(1) Subsection (2) applies to a withdrawal if ⎯
(a) it would have been authorised by section 3; but
(b) it was made before this Ordinance comes into force.

(2) A withdrawal to which this subsection applies is to be treated as having been made
lawfully.

IN EXERCISE of my powers under section 5 of the Currency Ordinance 2000 and of all
other powers enabling me, I make the following Order ⎯
1. Title
This Order is the Commemorative Coins (2019, 2020 and 2021) Order 2021.
2. Commencement
This Order comes into force on publication in the Gazette.
3. Interpretation
In this Order, “new commemorative coins” means the coins described and specified in the
Schedule.
4. New commemorative coins
(1) The minting and issue of the new commemorative coins are authorised.
(2) New commemorative coins that were minted or issued before this Order comes into force
are to be treated as if they had been authorised at the time of minting or issuing.
5. Description and specification
(1) Part 1 of the Schedule describes the design of the reverse and obverse of the new
commemorative coins.
(2) Part 2 of the Schedule specifies ⎯
(a) the year of minting, denomination, weight, diameter, fineness, quality, shape, edge
and quantity;
(b) the tolerance or remedy which may be permitted in respect of variations from their
standard weight, diameter and fineness; and
(c) the authorised mint,
of the new commemorative coins.

6. Legal tender
The new commemorative coins are legal tender in the Territory in the amount of their
denomination.

Description of reverse and obverse design of new commemorative coins

a) Macaroni Penguins - £2
Reverse: the design features a group of Macaroni Penguins on an outcrop. The value appears
at the base of the design.
Obverse: uncouped portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Pobjoy Mint surrounded by
the inscription ‘SOUTH GEORGIA & SOUTH SANDWICH ISLANDS 2019’.

b) Nursing Tribute - £2
Reverse: the design features a heart with a heartbeat in the centre enveloped by Angel wings.
The six ‘C’s’ – Courage, Commitment, Compassion, Competence, Communication and Care
are shown in the surround with the Coat of Arms of South Georgia and the South Sandwich
Islands shown at the top. The value appears at the base of the design.
Obverse: couped portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Pobjoy Mint Ltd surrounded
by the inscription ‘SOUTH GEORGIA & SOUTH SANDWICH ISLANDS 2020’.
8c) HMS Resolution – 50p
Reverse: the design features the ship HMS Resolution. The wording ‘HMS RESOLUTION’
is shown at the base of the design with the value in the field.
Obverse: couped portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Pobjoy Mint surrounded by
the inscription ‘SOUTH GEORGIA & SOUTH SANDWICH ISLANDS 2020’.
9d) Penguins – 50p
Reverse: the designs are:
i) Chinstrap Penguin – the design features a Chinstrap Penguin with the wording
‘CHINSTRAP PENGUIN’ at the top of the coin with the value at the base;
ii) Gentoo Penguin – the design features a Gentoo Penguin with the wording ‘GENTOO
PENGUIN’ at the top of the coin with the value at the base;
iii) King Penguin – the design features a King Penguin with the wording ‘KING
PENGUIN’ at the top of the coin with the value at the base; and
iv) Macaroni Penguin – the design features a Macaroni Penguin with the wording
‘MACARONI PENGUIN’ at the top of the coin with the value at the base.

12f) SubPolar Zone - £2
Reverse: the design shows the landscape of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
In the foreground is the native flower the Burnet with two King penguins standing on rocks
behind. A field hut can be seen behind with a Petrel bird flying overhead. The wording
‘SUBPOLAR ZONE’ appears at the top of the design with the value incorporated into the
design.
