Providing Platinum Customer Service in the Business Office Ballroom A

Presenter: Susan Harkin, SFO, Community Unit School District 300, Illinois - Chief Operating Officer

Good customer service in schools optimizes the interaction between staff, students, parents, and your
community. Lousy customer service can permanently tarnish the image of your school district or department.
If someone has a bad experience at your school district, you can bet they will be relaying that to their friends
and family, and worse yet, may take their complaint up the chain to your superintendent or school board.
However, customer service does not mean catering to every constituents’ whim but finding creative ways to
provide a better school experience. In this session, learn about how your business office can shift from the
blame game to creating a platinum customer service mindset.

Employees, Contractors and Taxes: Wading Through Risky and Expensive Waters Ballroom B

Presenter: Chris McCarty, Lewis Thomason Law, Tennessee - Attorney

Public school systems and other public entities often forget that they must recognize some of the same
dangers faced by private enterprise. Those public school systems, for example, are often quick to call a part-
time speech therapist a “contractor” and pay her as a 1099. In doing so, however, IRS and/or DOL
misclassification factors are often either never discussed or outright ignored. Similarly, those same public
school systems – as generally tax exempt entities – also quite often ignore risks associated with failing to
       recognize taxable fringe benefits (e.g., administrator bonuses; assigned vehicles; certain relocation payments;
etc.). This session aims to help put those type of risks back on everyone’s radar, while also offering practical
advice regarding the mitigation and/or elimination of the same risks.

Millennials in the Workplace Ballroom C

Presenter: Ken Overman, Lowndes County Schools, Georgia - Assistant Superintendent of Finance and
   Operations

Millennials are changing the workplace, and it is crucial that school and district leaders are aware of what it
takes to ensure that these employees - and ALL employees - are prepared for success.

Leadership Skills - Working Together and Time Management Ballroom D

efficiency and effectiveness in your career. At the end of this session, the attendee will have learned at a

Presenter: Susan Harkin, Community Unit School District 300, Illinois - Chief Operating Officer

their hard work and innovative ideas to celebrate our shared successes. Annually, ASBO International
recognizes those school business officials that go above and beyond to serve the profession with the Eagle
Award and recognizes a school business official’s ingenuity and resourcefulness with the Pinnacle Award.

“Lead Your Evolution”
Everything changes. Not everything evolves. Every organization needs leaders
who can lead the evolution. Change is inevitable; evolving is not. Evolving means
becoming a better version of ourselves, our organizations, our world by focusing
on the things we have influence over.

Overcoming the adverse reaction to chaos and embracing the struggles that
strengthen allow leaders to help their organizations to evolve. The world is moving faster and faster requiring a
constant evolving mentality. Never rest on laurels or past accomplishments instead seeking to grow, stretch, and
evolve. Learn from those that came before and refused to evolve and gain insight into how you can lead your
evolution.

                                    Rose’s Team Building Art Experience

After lunch and transportation to the museum, participate in a team building activity involving painting your
own canvas.

Tour the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art and enjoy all that makes the museum unique: the artists, the architecture,
the history, and the landscape. The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art celebrates the innovative, independent and
creative spirit of their namesake Mississippi master potter George Ohr (1857-1918). In a fitting tribute to Ohr,
artist and architect Frank Fehry designed an award-winning campus of bold, intriguing, self-sufficient
structures. The four new buildings and the reconstructed home of Pleasant Reed offer visitors separate but not
isolated experiences – together creating a single unified vision connected by the expansive brick plaza and the
majestic live oaks. Let the landscape be relaxing and the art inspiring, invigorating and challenging.
