Subaru EPIC Dartmouth Competitor Guide 2015
A Message from the Event Director
Welcome Athletes,

We are excited that you have chosen to join us for the fourth running of Subaru EPIC Dartmouth. We
know you have many choices as where to race, and while we can’t be all things to all people, we can pick
one thing and do it really, really well. Our goal is to deliver the best value you’ve ever had in a long-
distance triathlon. We want to deliver a race that has you excited to come back, and excited to bring
your friends when you return.

As just our fourth set of competitors, we welcome you as partners in the continued creation and
development of this event, and our team and I look forward to your feedback. Your attention to details
throughout the weekend, and your active feedback after the event, will help us improve our event
design and delivery, allowing us to deliver an even better event in 2016.

Personal Communication Plan
Prior to departing for Dartmouth, Nova Scotia for this event, establish a communications plan with family and friends back
home. Long-distance triathlon is an extreme test of endurance and fitness. Emergency situations can occur. Please ensure
that you confirm your Emergency Contact information with Subaru EPIC Dartmouth registration volunteers when you check in
for the race.

When should I arrive?
                                                                                   th
It is strongly recommended that all athletes arrive in Dartmouth by Friday, June 26 at the latest. This allows your body
adequate time to recover from the stresses of travel, time to survey the race course, the opportunity to swim the course, check
in at the main Athlete Check-in on Friday afternoon, and attend the EPIC Athlete Welcome Dinner Friday evening. We do allow
a secondary Athlete Check-in on Saturday morning, but really as an accommodation for those athletes whose travel plans saw
them arrive too late on Friday to make Friday’s Athlete Check-in.

hours you will not be able to race. All race packets must be picked up by 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 27 or you will not
compete.

Please bring the following items with you to athlete check-in:
• Photo Identification
• TNS Membership card to show proof of current TNS membership or $20 CAN to purchase a one-day license. This race is
sanctioned by Triathlon Nova Scotia under the umbrella of Triathlon Canada, and it is this sanction that provides the insurance
coverage for this event and the competitors.
[A note to Atlantic Canadian competitors regarding the reciprocal Atlantic arrangement in place to honour out of province
licenses: TriPEI and TriNL licenses can be used while competing in all TriNS events (meaning you will not require the additional
one-day license for Subaru EPIC Dartmouth or any other TriNS sanctioned event). If you are joining us from NB, as of the date
of writing, NB has not yet signed onto the reciprocal license acceptance program, so you will have to pay the one day license
fee to meet insurance guidelines]

During registration, you will:
• Confirm the contact and medical information you provided when you completed the Medical form
• Provide any additional details necessary to provide complete and current medical information
• Sign the official race waiver and also a waiver that will allow for video and photography during the event.

Athlete Wristband
A wristband printed with your race number will be affixed to your wrist at athlete check-in. This band will identify you as an
official participant and must be worn during race week. The wristband is required for medical identification purposes and
allows you access to transition area and post-race athlete recovery area. You will not be allowed to remove your bicycle and/or
gear from the transition area following the race without your wristband affixed to your wrist.

Bike/Run Gear Bags & Special Needs Bags
During athlete check-in, athletes will receive five bags:
• Morning dry clothes bag
• Bike gear bag (T1)
• Bike special needs bag
• Run gear bag (T2)
• Run special needs bag

Special Needs Bags
Special needs stations will be located near the midpoint of the full distance bike course, and at the 1km/9.5km point of the run
course loop. This frequent access to your own Special Needs bag, especially on the run (two possibilities each loop) allows you
to easily use whichever nutrition source you have trained with – gels, bars, fluids). Special needs bags will not always be
returned, but we will attempt to bring them back to transition after the race. Do NOT place anything of value in your special
needs bag. Our volunteers will be watching as you approach the Special needs area – please clearly call out your number if you
want your Special Needs Bag

Mandatory Bike & Gear Check-In
                                                                                       th
Mandatory bike & gear bag check-in for Full Distance athletes is on Saturday, June 27 , from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. All bicycles and
bike/run (T1/T2) gear bags must be checked into the transition area and left overnight. Bicycles and bike/run gear bags will not
be permitted to enter the transition area on race morning. While bikes are stored in transition overnight, athletes will be
allowed to cover their seats and handlebars from inclement weather.
Subaru EPIC Dartmouth Competitor Guide 2015
Pack your bike and run gear in the appropriate gear bag and place them in the proper place. Helmets MUST go into the
athlete’s bike gear bag, cycling shoes may be with the bike only if they are clipped into the pedals. No loose gear will be allowed
on the ground next to the bicycles.

Mandatory Gear bag check in for Half distance athletes is also from 12 pm to 4 pm – this is for your T2 bag at the Lake Banook
Transition area.

Bike check in for Half distance athletes is from 4PM to 6PM at the Petpeswick Swim start location.

Personal Safety
Always train with at least one other person (especially in the open water). While swimming, please wear a brightly colored
swim cap and ensure that your family members and/or friends know where you are.

When training, please be courteous to drivers and pedestrians alike. The people that you encounter during your pre-race
training (and during the event) are all people that we need on our side as we move to expand this race over the next few years.
Please ride single file, as biking side by side is illegal in Nova Scotia.

As you are one of Dartmouth’s invited guests, please respect and obey the traffic laws during your training practices. Violators
will be cited. You are required to carry proper identification at all times. If you are stopped, you must present your
identification to the inquiring officer. Failure to do so may result in race disqualification. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Pre-Event Swim Advisement
The Lake Banook swim course utilizes a body of water that is open to the general public for swimming, kayaking, rowing, and
other recreational activities. Subaru EPIC Dartmouth wishes to caution all participants that it does not provide lifeguard services
prior to the event, and that all participants who swim prior to race day will do so at their own risk.

While we make reasonable efforts to inspect the swim entry and exit points for underwater hazards, the inspection does not
take place until just before the swim discipline starts. Participants are further urged to exercise caution and use common sense
if they elect to swim prior to the event and to be mindful of underwater hazards.

We will have three organized, but non-supervised, swim practices prior to race day: 7-10 AM on Thursday, Friday and Saturday
mornings.

Race Day Parking
Prince Albert Road (our bike course) will be closed to through traffic on race day, June 28th. On street parking is available on
many side streets near Lake Banook, as well as the Findlay Centre at 26 Elliot Street near transition.

Race Morning Procedure

Transition on Nowlan Street opens at 5 a.m. on race morning. Remember to bring your swim cap, goggles and wetsuit. Please
do not wear your bib number in the swim. Leave it with your gear and put it on before you head out on the bike course. The
number will not hold up for the duration of the race if it gets wet. You will receive two race number bibs at registration, one
with the number predominant (intended to be worn on your back for the bike), and one with your first name (or team name)
predominant (intended to be worn on your front for the run). If you chose to use just one number bib, please use a Number
Belt so you can easily display your number to the back on the bike and to the front on your run.

Body marking will begin at 5 a.m. just outside the transition area. Do not number yourself expecting to bypass check-in. During
the body marking process, you will receive your race number on left arm and left leg, with your age on the back of your left calf.
Athletes are responsible for ensuring the body marking volunteer marks the athlete’s age as of December 31, 2015, which
corresponds with the age division in which the athlete will compete in on race day.

You will be assigned a timing Chip from the staff of Atlantic Chip before you enter transition. Please affix this chip to either
ankle.

You will not be permitted in the transition area on race day without your wristband, swim cap and timing chip. If you have
misplaced any of these items, please see the transition area director for a replacement. Do not apply sunscreen, oil, vaseline or
lotion until after you have been body marked. The transition area closes at 6:30 a.m. All athletes must be out of transition and
headed to the swim before this time.

Transition at the Petpeswick location for the Half distance events opens at 9AM. Timing chip pick up details will be confirmed
at a later date

Morning Clothes Bag
Prior to the swim start on race morning, place any items you may need after you finish in your morning clothes bag (for both
the Full and Half distance events. The morning clothes bag drop will be located by the entrance to the swim start. Please do not
place anything of value in your morning clothes bag. Any items that do not fit inside your morning clothes bag (such as bike
pumps and backpacks) will not be accepted. Please give these items to a friend or family member.

These Morning Clothes Bags will be available after the race in the Athlete recovery area overlooking the Finish Line.

Aid Stations
Bike course aid stations will be in six locations along the route: approximately 40k, 70k, 90k, 110k, 140k, and 155k. The Bike
Special Needs pick up will be located at the 90k point.

There will be 5 Run Course Aid Stations on the 10.55 km run course. This provides 10 Aid Stations for the Half Marathon
distance, and 20 Aid Stations for the full Marathon distance. The Run Special Needs pick will be at the shared first stop on the
run loop, so you will have access to your special needs bag at the 1.0 km and 9.5k point of each run loop (eight times for the full
marathon distance).

Bike course aid stations will offer the following:
      Gatorade (Lemon)
      Water
      Bananas

Run course aid stations will offer the following:
     Gatorade (Orange)
     Water
     Pretzels
     Assorted Fruit
     Defizzed cola
     Soup (after 6:30)

Race Timing & Cut-Offs
The race will officially end 15 hours after the swim start. Aid station stops, transitions, etc., will be included in your total elapsed
time. Splits will be recorded for each segment of the race. The following cut-off times apply for each segment of the race:

Swim Cut-off: 9:20 a.m. Two hours and twenty minutes after the start. For the Half, the cutoff will be 12:10 PM, one hour and
ten minutes after the start.

Bike Cut-off: The bike course must be completed by 5:30 p.m.

Run Cut-off: If you are competing in the Iron-distance race, you must complete your second loop of the run course (21.1 k) by 8
p.m. Any Iron-entrant not reaching this point by 8 p.m. will be directed to the finish line for an EPIC Finish. The run course will
officially close at 10 p.m.

Atlantic Chip electronic tags will capture your splits (swim, T1, bike, T2, run) and overall finish time. The race will officially end
at 10 p.m.
Subaru EPIC Dartmouth reserves the right to remove any athlete from the course and DNF the athlete if our course staff
determines there is no possibility of an athlete finishing the given discipline (swim, bike, run) before the posted cut-off times
based on an athlete’s location, time and average speed up to that point.

Bicycle & Gear Recovery
Mandatory bike and gear recovery is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on race day. You are required to reclaim your bicycle and gear
after the race. You must have your athlete wristband on in order to claim your bike and gear. If you are unable to personally
claim your bike and gear, a family member or friend may use your bike check-out ticket that will be provided in your race
packet. As a precaution, give this ticket to a family member or friend prior to the race, even if you plan to reclaim your bike and
gear yourself. They will require your bike check-out ticket and photo identification in order to collect your bike and gear bags.

While we suggest that you not place anything of value in your Special Needs bags in case you do not get them back, we will
attempt to bring them back for you. In fact, we have to bring them back to race central, as in Nova Scotia, we can not dispose
of unsorted garbage. The bike special needs will be in transition when you get your bike and gear, and the run special needs
will be brought back to the stadium area after the run finish, and be available that night or the next morning. Please help us by
collecting and recycling/discarding your Special Needs bags as appropriate - many hands make light work!

Medical Tent
The Medical Tent is a controlled area. Family, friends, spectators, media, and other athletes will not be granted entry.

Competitor Responsibilities
· You must wear your timing chip at all times while you are racing. Fasten it to either ankle with the Velcro strap provided
before the swim and leave it on until after you finish the run. You may apply Vaseline around your ankle; it will not affect the
timing chip. Volunteers will help you remove the chip at the finish line.
· There will be a location in transition for team members to tag off and physically transfer the timing chip from one team mate
to the next.
· If you do not start the race, you are responsible for returning the chip to timing.
· If you drop out or are pulled from the race at any time, turn in your chip to a race official. It is essential that we know where
you are on the course at all times for your safety and our peace of mind. If you are transported to any medical station, the
medical staff will take responsibility for your chip.
· Your race chip is a loaner. By picking up your race number and timing chip, you are guaranteeing that you will return the chip
to timing, or you will be billed for its replacement.
· If you lose your timing chip during the event, you are responsible for a replacement at one of the following locations: swim
exit, bike exit or run exit. Timing staff will have extra timing chips at the locations above. If you lose your timing chip while on
the run course, please notify a timing official immediately after crossing the finish line.
NO CHIP = NO TIME

Swim Course – 3.8 Kilometers
Map: (http://goo.gl/maps/Ienj8)

Swim Course Summary
The two-loop swim takes place in Lake Banook, site of four World Championship Canoe/Kayak events. It is among the very best
Spectator venues in the world for an Iron-distance swim. The water temperature is expected to be 19-22C.
The swim is a mass start keeping all swim buoys to your left. Athletes do not leave the water between laps. After the second
lap, exit the water at Lion’s Beach. Wetsuit Strippers will be on hand to assist you removing your gear, and then you will run
into Transition located immediately beside Swim Exit on Nowlan Street. The swim course will close at 9:20 am. (2 hour and 20
minute time limit)

These swim details are only for the Full distance events for Athletes competing at the Half distance – see next page.
Half Distance Swim location:

Petpeswick Inlet is salt water, but acts more like a salt water lake, than Atlantic Ocean. With a long circuitous path to open
water, there is limited water exchange and the inlet warms at about the same rate as similar size lakes. HRM lifeguard records
                    st
show similar July 1 temperatures for Lake Banook and Government Wharf (our swim start location).

The water temperature is expected to be 18-21C.

The swim is a mass start keeping all swim buoys to your left. Athletes do not leave the water between laps. After the second
lap, exit the water at the beach, and enjoy the shortest ever run to T1. Wetsuit Strippers will be on hand to assist you removing
your gear, and then you will enter Transition across the road from the Swim Exit. The swim course will close at 12:10 am. (1
hour and 10 minute time limit)
Swim Course Rules & Instructions
1. Athletes must wear cap provided by race.
2. No fins, gloves, paddles, or flotation devices of any kind are allowed.
3. Swim goggles or facemasks may be worn.
4. No individual paddlers or escort allowed. The course will be adequately patrolled by boats, canoes and paddleboards.
5. Any assistance required during the swim will result in disqualification if forward progress was made. Athletes are
permitted to use kayaks and boats as aid, as long as forward progress is not made. Special provisions are made for
paratriathletes. Course officials and medical personnel reserve the right to remove athletes from the course if determined
   medically necessary.
*NOTE: ANY ATHLETE ELECTING NOT TO RACE MUST NOTIFY TIMING DESK IMMEDIATELY. ABOVE ALL, THE SAFETY OF EACH
SWIMMER IS OUR PRIME CONCERN. A FULL SWEEP OF THE COURSE WILL BE MADE DIRECTLY BEHIND THE LAST SWIMMER.

Wetsuit Rules
Wetsuit use will be in accordance with Triathlon Canada and ITU Competition Rules. The final ruling on wetsuit use will be
made one hour prior to the start of the event by the Technical Delegate.

Water temperatures in Lake Banook are anticipated to be 19°-22°C, so a ‘wetsuit legal, but not mandatory’ swim is anticipated.
Please see Triathlon Canada rules for complete details (as wetsuit use can also be affected by air temperature), but in general,
and for this distance of swim, the rules mandate wetsuits below 16° C, and ban wetsuits above 24° C.
Swim to Bike Transition

After completing the swim, you will be directed through the timing chutes to the transition swim to the T1 transition zone.
Crossing the timing mats, you will pick up your T1 Gear bag and head to the Change Tents. Public nudity is not permitted. We
require you to be fully ready to race before getting on your bike. Personal nutrients are permitted if carried on you or your bike.
Sunscreen is available when you leave the change tent before the bike course begins.

Please inform family and friends not to follow you, or to ‘leap frog’ your progress with a car, while you are on the bike course.
If family or friends would like to cheers for you on course, the area near Goffs is at both the 45 and 135km point of the course,
and is quickly reached from the highway. Use exit 5A on Highway 102 (one exit south of the airport), and continue north on the
212 for 7 km where you will intersect the bike course near Aid Stations 1 and 5.
Bike Course – 180 Kilometers
(Detailed Map: http://goo.gl/maps/eT9gR)

Bike Course Summary
The challenging out-and-back bike course takes place on primary and secondary roads throughout Dartmouth and across the
Halifax Regional Municipality. The constantly rolling nature of the course, combined with the possibility of a head wind on the
return leg headed back towards the coast in the afternoon (land mass heating on sunny summer afternoons leads to onshore
winds) make this course a worthy challenge. You will be well advised to conserve your energy on the first half of this route.

Bike Course Detail

Departing T1, the Subaru EPIC Dartmouth cycle course heads north out of Dartmouth, following the chain of lakes that forms
the start of the historic Shubenacadie Canal: Lake Banook, Lake Micmac, and Lake Charles.

Next comes the community of Waverly, with a rolling section along Lake William, then Lake Thomas. You’ll cycle past Fletcher’s
Lake in the community of Fall River, and then one of Nova Scotia’s largest lakes, Shubenacadie Grand Lake, where the cycle
route turns east.

Crossing over Highway 102, the course takes a right onto Oldham Road, and soon after, the only notable climb on the course.
Starting about kilometer 36, and with a maximum slope of 9.5%, you’ll climb from 14M to the high point on the course of
162M.
Depending which runways are in use, you may see a selection of aircraft approaching and departing from Halifax International
Airport, before you turn left on Old Guysborough Road, past the Airline Golf Club, and a then relatively straight section that will
take you past Dollar Lake Provincial Park.

Soon after you pass Milnes and Tully Lakes on your left, you’ll be turning right onto the 357 South at Elderbank, past Elderbank
Provincial Park, and following the beautiful Musquodoboit River south, through the community of Meagher’s Grant towards the
Halfway Point, and the cycle turn-around, near Caribou Lake just north of Musquodoboit Harbour.

If you are competing in the EPIC Half, or the Half TERRA events

Upon leaving the Petpeswick T1, you will turn left and follow the course and signs and join up with the FULL distance bike
course in approximately 2k, at the halfway point, for the 90k ride back into Lake Banook. From the point at which you join the
bike course all the rest of the detail is identical to the FULL details

Bike Course Rules & Instructions
Please understand that based on permits for the roads on the course and the safety of athletes involved, cutoff times must be
respected for this event.

1) Position Rules:
     a) Absolutely NO DRAFTING of another bike or any other vehicle is allowed.
     b) Athletes must keep 12 meters (~7 bike lengths) distance between bikes except when passing. Failure to do so will
          result in a drafting violation.
     c) A pass occurs when the leading edge of the overtaking athlete’s front wheel passes the leading edge of the front
wheel of the athlete being overtaken.
     d) Overtaking Athletes may pass on the left for up to 30 seconds, but must move back to the right side of the road, after
passing. Failure to complete a pass within 30 seconds will result in a drafting violation. Athletes may not back out of
the 12 meter draft zone once it is entered (drafting violation).
     e) Overtaken Athletes must immediately fall back 12 meters (~7 bike lengths) before attempting to regain the lead from
a front running bike. Immediately re-passing prior to falling back 12 meters will result in a drafting violation.
     f) Overtaken Athletes who remain within 12 meters (~7 bike lengths) for more than 30 seconds will be given a drafting
          violation.
     g) Athletes must ride single file on the far right side of the road except when passing another rider, or for reasons of
safety. Side-by-side riding is not allowed and will result in a blocking violation.
     h) Athletes who impede the forward progress of other Athletes will be given a blocking violation.
     i) Athletes committing rules violations will be notified “on the spot” by an official.
     j) Do not attempt to discuss the penalty with the official.

2) The official will:
     a) Call out your race number and/or notify you that you have received either a RED CARD for drafting or a YELLOW CARD
for any other penalty. The official will show you the corresponding colored card.
     b) Instruct you to report to the Penalty Box (PB) on the course. The Penalty Box will be located at the Grahams Grove
location (the same location as Aid Stations 1 & 5 on the run course, and immediately beside a police controlled
          intersection).

3) The athlete will:
     a) Report to the next PB and tell the PB Official whether you were shown a RED CARD or a YELLOW CARD. If you fail to
report to the PB, you may be disqualified.
     b) Have race numbers marked by the PB Official with a “/” for drafting or a “P” for all other penalties.
     c) Register, via the sign-in sheet.
     d) Resume the race immediately, upon having your numbers marked with a “P” and registering, for all non-drafting
          violations (YELLOW CARD).
     e) Remain in the PT for the time indicated in the table below, for each drafting violation (RED CARD):
     f) 1st Offense: 4:00, 2nd Offense: 4:00, 3rd Offense: DQ
     g) Be disqualified if you receive any combination of three penalties. If you are disqualified, you may finish the bike
course but may not start the run.
4) Bicycles must be racked in a manner such that the majority of the bicycle is on the athlete’s side of the bike rack.
5) No tandems, recumbents, fairings, or any add-on device designed exclusively to reduce resistance are allowed. Any new,
unusual, or prototype equipment will be subject to a determination of legality by the event organizer and/or Head
      Referee.
6) The sole responsibility of knowing and following the prescribed cycling course rests with each athlete. No adjustments in
times or results shall be made for Athletes who fail to follow the proper course for any reason whatsoever.
7) Athletes must obey all traffic laws while on the cycling course unless otherwise specifically directed by an official, race
monitor or designee with actual authority. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
8) Crossing the yellow center line is an automatic disqualification
9) No athlete shall endanger himself or another participant. Athletes, who intentionally present a danger to any athlete or
who, in the judgment of the Head Referee, appear to present a danger to any athlete may be disqualified.
10) Shoes may be attached to the pedals in transition.
11) Athletes must wear the race issued bib number at all times while on the course. The bib number must be placed low on
the BACK of athlete’s jersey where it is clearly visible. Folding or cutting bib number or intentional alteration of any kind is
STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Race belts may be worn.
12) Athletes must wear a bike helmet number on the front of their helmet.
13) Athletes must have a bike frame number fixed to their bike and the entire number must be clearly visible from the left
      side.
14) CPSC-approved helmet is required to be worn with chin strap fastened at any time the athlete is in control of the bike and
the bike is not racked, including the entire bike portion and in and out of the transition area.
15) Athletes riding without an approved helmet or chinstrap not fastened may be disqualified. Alterations to hard-shell
helmet, which affect its integrity, are not allowed.
16) No individual support allowed. Ample aid and food stations will be provided. Friends, family members, coaches, or
supporters of any type may NOT bike, drive, or run alongside athlete, may not pass food or other items to athlete and
should be warned to stay completely clear of all Athletes to avoid the disqualification of a athlete. It is incumbent upon
each athlete to immediately reject any attempt to assist, follow, or escort.
17) Do not litter. Any item that needs to be discarded, including but not limited to water bottles, gel wrappers, energy bar
wrappers, broken bike parts, or clothing items, may only be discarded in the trash drop zones at each aid station. Littering
will result in disqualification from the event.
18) Athletes must be individually responsible for repair and maintenance of their own bike. Athletes should be prepared to
handle any possible mechanical malfunction. Assistance from official race personnel is permitted.
19) Athletes may walk with their bike, if necessary, but may not make progress on the bike course unaccompanied by their
      bicycle.
20) Bike inspection is not mandatory and will not be provided at bike check-in, although technicians will be available. Athletes
are ultimately responsible for their own bikes. However, race officials may at their discretion make final judgment as to the
soundness of bikes. In the event of foul weather, large plastic bags, which cover the entire bike, will be permitted as long
as the bags are securely fastened to the bike.
21) Communication devices of any type, such as cell phones and two-way radios are strictly prohibited during competition.
Use of such devices will result in disqualification.
22) HEADSETS OR HEADPHONES ARE NOT ALLOWED DURING ANY PORTION OF THE EVENT.
23) MEDICAL SUPPORT. If you need minor medical assistance, we will have medical staff on course. Alternatively, depending
upon medical emergency, ambulances will take you to the nearest hospital to receive treatment. If you have a technical
problem or have bonked, the Sag Wagons will take you to the next aid station. At every bike and run aid station, there will
be rest areas and communication to reach help, ambulances, and medical assistance. If you have a problem, please go to
an aid station for further assistance.
24) Cyclists still on the course after 5:30 p.m. will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue in the event.

*Note: Bike aid stations are located at approximately 40k, 70k, 90k, 110k, 140k, and 155k. It is your responsibility to slow for
safe nutrient pick-up. Call out your requirements clearly and in advance. Crews are instructed not to step on to the road for
handoffs. It is imperative that you don’t toss bike bottles, cups, or nutrient bags on the roadside along the course. Littering on
course will result in disqualification from the event.

*Note: There will be a Technical support vehicle on the course to assist with emergency repairs whenever possible; such as
replacement tubes, tires, chains, etc. Due to the length of the bike course, you cannot count on immediate assistance. Please be
self-sufficient.

Local Traffic Laws
Please remember that members of the local community use the bike course roads. Realize that you are an ambassador for the
sport and the event and the impact of your actions is far reaching. When you’re out riding the course, please adhere to local
traffic laws and go the extra mile to be courteous and respectful to the residents of the local community. Every time a cyclist has
an altercation with a driver, that driver sees every cyclist on the road as the enemy. Every time a cyclist is courteous to a driver,
that driver will give every cyclist on the road that much more respect and courtesy in return. Please think before you act.
When training, please follow these suggestions:
• Please ride single file. This is not just for your safety but also to ensure local drivers can get where they need to go without
delay and frustration.
• Please obey traffic laws (stop at stop signs, signal when turning, etc.).
• Please do not use private property as a toilet.
• Please do not litter. Keep your energy bar and gel wrappers with you until you find a trashcan.
• Please ask your friends and family members to refrain from painting the roads along the course. This defaces public property
and is a punishable offense.

Bike-to-Run Transition & AQUA Dartmouth Finish

Returning from the bike course, after passing the Finish Line on your right hand side, all competitors will make an immediate
right turn to Nowlan St., and the short downhill in to the dismount line, where you will cross the timing mat and enter
transition. PLEASE GO SLOW AND BE CAREFUL. You have just completed 180k of cycling, our dismount area is at the bottom of
a hill, and your legs may be wobbly as you dismount.

After the dismount, a volunteer will re-rack your bike, while you cross the timing mats, pick up your T2 Gear bag, and head to
the Change Tents. Public nudity is not permitted. Please ensure that your race bib number is properly affixed and forward
facing before leaving transition. Sunscreen is available when you leave the change tent before the run course begins.

If you are completing the AQUA Dartmouth distance, you will finish as you dismount the bike - the run requirement has been
removed for 2015 forward.
Run Course – 21.1 k or 42.2k
(Detailed Map: http://goo.gl/maps/LJNIY)

Run Course Summary

Departing T2, the Subaru EPIC Dartmouth run course heads North, following Dartmouth’s paved multi-use trail, circling around
the East and North shores of Lake Banook. A few blocks through a residential section will bring you under Highway 111, to join
the Lake Charles Trail heading through Shubie Park.

The Shubie Park portion is a wide and smooth crusher dust surface winding through the park and leading back to pavement and
the highest point on the run course at the top of John Brenton Drive.

From John Brenton Drive you will turn right to Jaybe Drive, then almost immediately right onto Waverly Road, and head South
along the East side of Lake MicMac, crossing over Highway 111 and returning on Prince Albert Road to start your next lap, or to
complete your day at our Finish Line on the shores of Lake Banook. Each lap is 10.55 k, so 2 loops complete the EPIC distance,
and four complete the IRON distance.

This spectator friendly 10.55k loop route features a mix of surfaces from paved trails and roads, crusher-dust surfaced Trans-
Canada Trail, a short section of unpaved road through the Campground section, then back to paved road and concrete sidewalk
to complete the loop. Your run will take you around the top of Lake Banook, and completely circle Lake Micmac, cross several
bridges, including one over the historic Shubie Canal, and provide spectacular tree-lined scenery throughout your run. There
are a few hills through the park, and overall, athletes will find this a challenging but fair run course.

Run Course Rules & Instructions
1. No form of locomotion other than running or walking is allowed.
2. Athletes must wear their issued bib number in front of them clearly visible at all times on the course. Bib numbers identify
the official athletes in the race. Folding, cutting the bib number, intentional alteration of any kind, or failure to wear race
number is STRICTLY PROHIBITED and may result in disqualification.
3. NO INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT VEHICLES OR NON-PARTICIPANT ESCORT RUNNERS ARE ALLOWED. This is an individual endurance
event. Teamwork as a result of outside assistance, which provides an advantage over single competitors, is not allowed.
Individual support vehicles or non-participant escort runners will result in disqualification. A non-participant escort runner
includes Athletes who have withdrawn from the race, have been disqualified or have finished the race. Friends, family,
members, coaches or supporters of any type may not bike, drive or run alongside athlete, may not pass food or other items to
athlete and should be warned to stay completely clear to avoid the disqualification of an athlete. It is incumbent upon each
athlete to immediately reject any attempt to assist, follow, or escort. It IS permissible for an athlete who is still competing to
run with other Athletes who are still competing.
4. Athletes are expected to follow the directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities.
5. The sole responsibility of knowing and following the prescribed running course rests with each athlete. No adjustments in
times or results shall be made for athletes who fail to follow the proper course for any reason whatsoever.
6. A shirt or racing top must be worn at all times.
7. The Subaru EPIC Dartmouth Run Course will officially close at 10:00 p.m.

Special Rules for Teams
There will be a marked Hand-off zone in the Transition Area. Team competitors will not be required to pass through the change
tents. The hand-off between team members will be accomplished by transferring the Velcro timing chip from the ankle of the
swimmer to the cyclist for T1, and then from the ankle of the cyclist to the runner for T2. Both the cyclist and the runner must
be body marked and wear clearly visible bib numbers – to the back on the cycle, and to the front on the run.

Changing race distance on race day
If prior to race day, you opt to compete at a different distance than what you selected when you registered to compete, please
tell our volunteers during registration.

Subaru EPIC Dartmouth is the first long distance race that will allow competitors the option of changing distances on race day.
This means that as long as you get off your bike by the 5:30 cutoff, you will be a finisher at one of the three distances. If you
start the EPIC or IRON and opt to finish after the bike portion, you may do so by finishing at the AQUA distance. If you start the
IRON and wish to finish at the EPIC distance, head to the finish line after completing your second loop of the run course. Please
let our volunteers know if you are choosing either of these options as soon as possible so they can alert the timing volunteers at
the finish line. The same applies if you are registered for the EPIC, but opt to ‘go-long’ and complete the full distance come race
day. This ability to change distance is a unique feature of this race and was very well received in our first year when we had
record high temperatures. If you want to exercise this option on race day, please communicate your intention clearly and
with as much advance notice as possible.

If you are entered at the IRON distance, you will have to complete the first two loops of the run course by 8 PM in order to
continue on course. Those who do not make this cut off will be directed to the finish line and an EPIC-distance finish.

ITU Worlds Championship Qualifying Spots

Subaru EPIC Dartmouth has Qualifying Spots for the 2016 World Long Course Triathlon Championships in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma. We are also very pleased that this race, the Redman Triathlon, is a partner race to Subaru EPIC Dartmouth, and one
of the founding members in the International FullOn Triathlon Series!

The competition distance for these World’s Qualifying Spots will be: 3.8k swim, 180k bike, and a 21.1k run (our EPIC distance),
and the Age Groups are in 5 year increments, with the exception of the 18-19 year age group (20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, etc…).

ALL competitors at both the EPIC and IRON distances will be in contention for these Team Canada slots, as our timing mats will
be set up so the mid-point of the IRON distance run will be exactly the EPIC distance, so all entered athletes will be ranked on
their 3.8k/ 180k/ 21.1k times for the purpose of Team Canada selection.

Please note that since these World’s Qualifying Spots are for a competition in 2016, your Age Group to qualify for Team Canada
2016 will be based your age as of Dec 31st 2016, and may be different than the Age Group you are competing in for EPIC
Dartmouth 2015.

If you complete EPIC Dartmouth with a top finish in the Worlds Qualifying Spots rankings, go to www.triathloncanada.com and
register for your spot on the 2016 team by completing the on-line registration (see registration time lines on the Triathlon
Canada website) .

If you didn’t win the Qualifying Spot for your Age Group, there is still a possibility you can get a spot on the team through the
“Roll-Down” process. Register on-line with Triathlon Canada to let them know you are interested in being part of the 2016 Age
Group Triathlon World Championship Team in Motala, Sweden. If the spot you’re vying for does not get “claimed” – the spot is
offered to next highest finishing athlete who has requested a spot on the team.

Just for clarity, ITU World’s Qualifying Spots can only be earned by residents of the country where the Qualifying Spots are
awarded, so you must be Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Landed Immigrant, and a full member in good standing of
                                                                                       th
your Provincial Triathlon Association prior to the Subaru EPIC Dartmouth on June 28 (if not, you can buy an annual Triathlon
Nova Scotia membership at race kit pick-up).

Finish Line Policy
Friends and/or family members are not permitted to cross the finish line or enter the finish chute with participating athletes.
Event Sanction and Rules
Triathlon Nova Scotia (TNS) has sanctioned the 2015 Subaru EPIC Dartmouth Triathlon. A complete set of the ITU Competition
Rules are available at the following URL:

Rules Applying To All Segments of Race
 It is the athlete’s responsibility to know all aspects of the swim, bike and run.
 Participants are expected to follow directions and instructions of all course marshals and public authorities.
 Medical personnel shall have ULTIMATE and FINAL authority to remove a contestant from the race if the contestant is
judged to be physically incapable of continuing the race without risk of serious injury or death. Medical transport of any
     contestant will result in disqualification.
 Fraud, theft, abusive treatment of volunteers, staff or others and acts of poor sportsmanship are grounds for immediate
disqualification and will result in contestant being suspended from competing in future events.
 If an athlete decides to withdraw from the race at any time, it is the responsibility of the contestant to report to the timing
tent located at the finish line and turn in their bib number and timing chip immediately. It is essential that race officials
know where contestants are on the course at all times.
 Communication devices of any type are strictly prohibited during competition. Use of such devices may result in
     disqualification.

Bike Shipping & Bike Tech Information
Local high-end bike shop Cyclesmith has offered to receive and prep your bike for the race. They can store the bike cases
during the event and rebox the bike after the race.

      Unbox $40.
      Unbox/store/rebox $75.

Shipping direct to Cyclesmith from within Canada is not a problem. Shipments from outside Canada directly to a bike shop run
the risk of being tagged as an import by Customs, creating a string of headaches and delays. If you are shipping from outside
Canada for our race, we strongly recommend arranging shipping via a 3rd party (like the hotel where you will be staying) rather
than directly to the bike shop.

Tech Tips & Other Details
 Bike inspection is not mandatory and will not be provided at bike check-in.
 Athletes are ultimately responsible for their own bikes. However, race officials may, at their discretion, make final
judgment as to the soundness of the bikes.
 Prior to mandatory bike check-in, be sure your bar-end plugs are in place and you have no loose spokes, brakes, headsets,
stripped cables, etc. Adjust the hubs and position handlebars correctly. Ensure that cables and tires are in good condition
and sew-up tires are glued properly onto the rims. Securely fasten all equipment you may carry with you on race day.
 To avoid an unexpected flat tire, in hot weather wait until race morning to inflate your tires to their proper air pressure.
There will be a limited number of pumps available in the transition area on race morning. If you bring your own pump, you
must give your pump to a family member or friend before the race start, since pumps will not be accepted with your pre-
     swim Morning Clothes Bags.
 For security and safety reasons, bikes will not be allowed out of the transition area once they are checked-in on Saturday.
No one will be allowed to enter the bike compound unless accompanied by a race official.
 On race day, there will be a bike tech vehicle on course to aid in emergency repairs.

Medical Information
Particular dangers include dehydration, hyponatremia, sunburn, exhaustion and injuries sustained from accidents.
Please ask for medical help if you have the slightest hint you may need it. You will not be penalized for receiving a medical
evaluation. You will be withdrawn from the race only if you require transportation, IV fluids or if medical personnel feel your
continued participation could result in serious harm or death.
During events of extreme endurance, the body’s pain threshold is raised, and you may be in more trouble than you realize. The
medical personnel will do all they can to keep you in the race and assure a safe finish. Also, please be attentive when taking
water from volunteers when you’re on your bike to avoid the possibility of accident or injury to yourself or another.
Please trim your fingernails and toenails prior to the start of the race to avoid injury to other athletes. Be especially careful to
rinse your goggles of any excess defogger solutions to avoid eye irritation.
Stay with your familiar and proven routine regarding training, nutrition and equipment, especially just prior to the race. This
also applies to pre-race dietary intake and medications. It is recommended you avoid an extreme elimination diet. Adequate
salt intake during training and during the event is especially important.
If you are taking any medications, or have any medical problem that may influence your performance or your treatment in the
event of an injury, advise us of all necessary details well in advance of race day. At athlete check-in, you are required to notify
the medical team, in writing, if there is any change in your medical status/condition after your application has been
processed.
Feedback from other long-distance events indicates we can never over emphasize the importance of hydrating prior to and
during the event. We recommends you begin hydrating heavily several days before the race and drink enough water so your
urine is clear, colorless and copious by race day.
PLEASE NOTE: Full disclosure of medical condition(s), general health and surgical procedures within the previous 12 months
is required. Medical consultation/clearance may be necessary from an attending physician prior to participating in the event.
In all cases, the final decision of medical consideration is at the discretion of the medical director.
Additional EPIC Half and Half TERRA Event Detail

Those participating in our Half-distance Duathlon, the Half TERRA, will follow the same process (with the exception that they
have no swim!). Competitors will be randomly assigned individual start times to facilitate separation on course, and accurate
timing.

Bike support for the 90k point-to-point ride will consist of three stocked Aid stations, roving EPIC Bike Mechanical and Technical
support, and our mobile EPIC Medic crew at mid-point (though we hope they are never required!)

Returning to Lake Banook, and the Swim start area, HALF-distance athletes will dismount, passing their bikes to the bike
catchers to be racked, so they can focus on retrieving their T2 gear bag from the racks and heading to the change tents to
prepare for the Run portion of their event.

The run is two loops of a 10.55 k loop around Lakes Banook and Mic Mac, on a mix of multi-use trail, surface streets and shaded
crusher-dust covered Trans-Canada Trail. We have 5 Run Aid Stations per loop, so 10 Aid Stations for the 21.1k Run distance.
Our Run Special Needs area is located at the combined Run Aid Stations 1&5, which competitors will pass four times at roughly
1k, 9.5k, 11.5k, and 20k. This allows us to support competitors with regular access in providing whatever sport drink or foods
they chose to include in their T2 bag – our course design means athletes are never forced to rely solely on the official race
choices for race day fluids and nutrition (though they can if they wish).

Completing two laps of the run course, EPIC HALF competitors will finish along the shore of Lake Banook under our main Finish
Line arch, in the same location as the AQUA, EPIC and IRON distance competitors!
