SUDAN: Conflict – Flash Update #6
                West Darfur and South Darfur
                As of 31 January 2021

WEST DARFUR
Key Points
• Humanitarians delivered aid to the vulnerable displaced
people in Ag Geneina town. Some 40,000 people – half
of those targeted – have received emergency food
rations. More than 27,000 have received non-food items
and 17,000 have access to health services thanks to
  mobile clinics.
• Over the past week, UN agencies dispatched two aid
convoys from Zalingei, West Darfur to Ag Geneina
delivering relief supplies, and deploying additional staff.
• Access challenges are impacting efforts to scale up
response in and outside Ag Geneina. The main roads to
the town are blocked and UNHAS flights remain
  suspended.
• Humanitarians are calling on the leaders of the sit-in
committee to expedite sustained access to areas outside
WFP convoy heading to Ag Geneina with vital

  receive aid.
• The security situation needs to improve to enable the
  IDPs to return safely.
• There are 71 gathering points in Ag Geneina, including 31 public buildings that are overcrowded and do not have
  adequate sanitation.

Situation
The situation in West Darfur remains calm but uncertain as demonstrations continue.
Aid agencies are ready to scale up the response in and outside Ag Geneina, including for an estimated 40,000 displaced
people in rural areas around Ag Geneina, however, road blockages are affecting these efforts. Since 19 January, the airport
road has been blocked by protesters at the Al Nasim bridge preventing humanitarian flights, crucial for supplies and
personnel. The UN and partners are urging all parties to facilitate the safe passage of impartial humanitarian assistance for
people in need, without discrimination.
There is need for more community reconciliation and peace-building efforts as well as addressing development and other
needs beyond humanitarian action.
Response
Food Security
Thanks to the recent arrival of the WFP convoy, cooking oil is now being distributed along with the one-month emergency
food rations which have now reached more than 40,000 people.
Health and Nutrition
Malnutrition screening continues in all IDPs gathering points coordinated by UNICEF and Ministry of Health (MoH). The
MoH evacuated 31 injured people to hospitals in Khartoum. IMC has established six mobile clinics to provide primary
health care services, screening and referral of severe cases.
Shelter/non-food items (NFI)
More than 27,000 individuals in gathering sites in Ag Geneina have received NFI kits since 24 January.
Protection
Some 25,000 people have been reached by protection partners with activities including community-level protection
monitoring. The child protection sub-sector conducted assessments in gathering sites and will establish child-friendly
spaces where necessary.
WASH
UNICEF is providing water to about 500 families and the Ministry of Health constructed four emergency communal latrines.

SOUTH DARFUR
Key Points

• An inter-agency team visited the Tuel area in Gereida locality on 27-30 January
and identified 3,600 displaced people in the area who fled inter-communal
violence in Abu Lala and Tuel villages in January and December last year.
• Overall, IOM estimates that about 20,000 people have been affected, the exact
numbers of affected and displaced people will be available after a
  registration/verification exercise.
• The displaced people and their livestock need water. Other priorities are food -
as people’s stocks have been exhausted -, shelter and non-food items. Partners
report that there are supplies in place to meet the needs of the most vulnerable
and delivery modalities are being reviewed.
• Around 900 IDPs from Tuel are receiving aid in Greige Camp, Nyala. The UN
and NGOs are providing WASH, shelter and health services, and food delivery
is expected today. About 600 of them received NFIs.
• The response in place before the current crisis has resumed for IDPs in Gereida
and camps around the town. The UN and NGOs are providing WASH, shelter,
  health services, and food.
• Local communities call for the government to support reconciliation and Vaccination of new IDPs from Gereida
in Dereige camp, Nyala Photo: State

Situation

About 20,000 people are estimated to have been affected by inter-communal clashes between members of the Fallata and
Rizeigat tribes that took place earlier in January in the Tuel area in Gereida locality. An inter-agency mission that visited the
area on 27-30 January found an estimated 3,600 people in eight location in the area who were displaced from Abu Lala
and Tuel villages by clashes in January and December after inter-communal violence started in October 2020.

Water is the key priority in the Fallata villages of South Darfur, including some villages where people have returned
voluntarily (Donki Abyed, Um Rakuna and Abudos).

Partners are working to scale up the response in the affected villages. So far, about 900 new IDPs from Abu Lala and Tuel,
who sought shelter and assistance in Dereige camp in Nyala, are able to access regular services in the camp.

Meanwhile, humanitarians continue their work in Gereida which hosts 72,000 IDPs. WFP provides food to some 58,000
IDPs in Gereida camps and, as part of the COVID-19 response, 90,000 people in rural Gereida.

Response

Food security
WFP distributed a one-month ration to 20,000 people in Gereida in December and provided a 25-day ration for 900
people in Dereige.

Health
Trauma and emergency surgery kits were delivered by WHO to Dereige camp for the new IDPs. Awareness sessions and
health messages were delivered to the displaced community and 16 primary healthcare volunteers have been mobilised.

Nutrition
MUAC screening was carried out in Dereige camp. Three severely malnourished children and 36 moderately malnourished
people were referred to the World Vison nutrition centre.

Protection
The government deployed joint forces and established buffer zones between the communities to control the security
situation and defuse tension.

The Sudanese water authority is organising the distribution of materials in Dereige camp for the construction of latrines.
They will also distribute hygiene supplies (soap, jerrycans, chlorine) on 1 February.
