Welcome to the third annual edition of AfricArena, brought to you in
association with Silicon Cape.
AfricArena presents an opportunity to explore tomorrow’s trends today by
meeting some of Africa’s most innovative start-ups. In 2018, some 70
start-ups from 32 countries presented, pitched and exhibited to over 150
investors. Deals of over $2m (US) were executed, with many other investment
offers being made. Last year also saw the launch of our start-up global
accelerator, and the introduction of the AfricArena Tour which visited the top
tech cities around the continent during the year.
Now, AfricArena is bigger and better. This year’s Tour hosted pitch events in
10 destinations across Africa, exhibition events in San Francisco and New
York City as well as VivaTech in Paris and TICAD 7 in Tokyo. The Tour featured
over 100 start-ups from across Africa showcasing their work. The best of
these have been selected to pitch at the grand stage of the AfricArena
Summit. This year’s Summit features more investors, new partnerships and
exciting open innovation challenges for our start-ups.
Based on internal research, AfricArena, Silicon Cape and Wesgro expected the
funding raised by African start-ups to increase by over 100% from 2018 to
2019, exceeding $1b for the first time. This prediction came true, with Partech
Africa revealing that 146 African tech start-ups raised $1.163-billion in equity
funding - a 108% year-on-year growth. Even though these figures are
minuscule compared to the ecosystems of more developed regions, this
growth positions Africa as a serious player in the 4th Industrial Revolution.
The African advantage is retaining the humanity in our digital evolution. We
believe our success is driven by a pan-African collaborative approach;
leveraging and sharing the innovative work of our partners in hubs across
Africa to change our world for the better. The world is looking to our
continent for the solutions to the big social, environmental and economic
challenges of our time. Go big or go home.
