TAFELBERG SCHOOL 20 APRIL 2021 - 1st TERM - NUMBER 13
Dear parent / guardian
Over the past week we once again witnessed the tragic effects of bullying at schools. It
is a world-wide pandemic in educational institutions, but it should never be tolerated or
condoned. As with GBV, bullying should be rooted out from our communities. However,
many see it as a school issue, and expect schools to “solve” the problem. Schools can
only do so much … they appeal to learners, invite speakers to give talks to learners, and
organize programs and campaigns. This may go some way towards conscientizing
learners and giving some learners the tools to deal with situations, but the family and
wider community need to take some responsibility. Although the bullying incidents which
did the rounds on social media lately were of a physical nature, the most prevalent and
damaging forms of bullying is the “silent” type – the spreading of images and vicious
slander among learners via their cellphones. We again ask parents to be vigilant and
know what their child is being exposed to and or exposing others to. As the parent you
have a right, and responsibility, to monitor your child’s cellphone. Talk to your child about
cellphone etiquette, what is appropriate to send or message on their phones, and
monitor the content. Let us work together to ensure the safety of all our children. We
wish all our learners a relaxing short upcoming term break.

on the SGB to collect such school fees from all parents as agreed upon at the parent
AGM. The Budget and school fees for 2021 were voted on at the parent AGM on 18
November 2020. The Budget and school fee increase was tabled and accepted by
unanimous parent vote at the AGM, as were certain school policies.

TAFELBERG SCHOOL 20 APRIL 2021 - 1st TERM - NUMBER 13
GENERAL NEWS
1. Term 2
The school management team, with the input of the teachers, have
presented a plan of action to the SGB and Education District Office, in
which we request that we be allowed to bring back all our learners for the
full school day as from next term. Last year the staff asked for the return
of all learners in 2021. As a result we asked WCED, and got their permission, to bring
back the Grades 10 + 11, as well as the Grade 12’s on a fulltime basis. As a result we
affected certain changes to procedures, timetables, venues etc, and it seems to have
worked well. We have reviewed the lessons learned last year and this term, and we feel
that with some small adjustments we have a workable plan to ensure the safe return of
all our learners in Term 2. During this period of declared national disaster, these changes
come with some considerable sacrifice by the teaching staff, but they are committed to
make this work. I thank them for their request to have all their learners back, and for the
extra duties they have taken on themselves. As a result, our revised plans and
procedures have, at this stage, not necessitated any additional spending on more
personnel or resources.
The following needs to be noted:
 We will return to the rotational system whenever the WCED instructs us to do so,
when there is a spike in infections, or the school management team deem our
safety measures and protocols are being compromised in any way.
 Any learner deemed to be deliberately contravening any of our Covid-19 safety
measures and protocols will be sent home immediately. We expect that the
parents will fetch their child immediately.
 Parents must ensure that their child does not arrive late (i.e. after 8am) as staff
availability will be stretched in the mornings, and this will result in our safety
measures being compromised. We need your co-operation in this matter in order
to make this plan to work.
 No parents or visitors will be allowed entry to the school before 9am.
 The present online assistance and printed workpacks will cease.
If approved, learners will return as follows:
        a) Grades 4-12 will all return on the first day of Term 2 (3 May)
        b) Grades 1-3 will still have one round of rotation:
           - Grades 1.1, 2.1 + 3.1 attend from 3-7 May
           - Grades 1.2, 2.2 + 3.2 attend from 10-14 May
        c) All Grades 1-3 return fulltime on Monday 17 May

2. Winter uniform (Term 2)
Learners must wear winter uniform as from the start of next term. Please ensure you
purchase the proper winter clothing items before the start of school next term. Grades
7-12 learners may only wear tracksuits on a Friday, as per policy.
3. Term 1 Reports
Due to circumstances beyond our control, Reports will be handed out in a staggered
manner:
 Foundation Phase point 1 (.1) classes: Reports will be handed out on Friday 7 May
 Foundation Phase point 2 (.2) classes: Reports will be handed out on Monday 10
     May
 Intermediate Phase point 1 (.1) classes: Reports can be collected on Friday 23
April, between 8:30 and 10:30 from reception. Those who do not collect will get an
     email copy after 11:00.
 Intermediate Phase point 2 (.2) classes: Reports will be handed out on Friday 23
     April
 Grades 7-12 Reports will be handed out on the first Friday of Term 2.
4. Covid safety measures
 Should your child test positive for Covid, they are to self-isolate at home for the
required period, before returning to school.
 Please remember to screen your child before they come to school. Should they
show symptoms of Covid (temperature above 380C, coughing, headaches, sore
throat etc.) and or have come into close contact with a Covid positive person, they
need to stay at home for the prescribed period before returning to school.
 As per our Covid policy, parents will be required to fetch their child immediately
should the learner disregard our safety protocols – we need to be responsible and
    prevent the spread of Covid.
5. Reminders – general
 Term 2 charity outreach – donate school stationery and odd socks
 Learners must have a valid reason for being absent from school – the school
must be informed of the absence in writing.
 The school in no way endorses any product, service or entity (nor any claim
made by them) advertised in this Newsletter.
6. Sport
No sport this week. Winter sport codes begin next term
