795 When the Vikings landed they were some of the earliest
residents and made Temple Bar the centre of Dublin.
1673 The earliest record of Temple Bar on a map.
1707 The Custom House was built in Temple Bar making
the area the centre of Trade and Commerce in Ireland – today U2’s
hotel The Clarence stands in its place.
1816 The iconic Ha’Penny Bridge was erected to replace
a ferry crossing, made by Harland and Wolf - who also built the
Titanic! Don’t let that worry you, thousands of people cross over the
Ha’Penny bridge every day to get into Temple Bar and it still stands
today!
1991 A government owned transport company started
to buy up property in Temple Bar, hoping to build a giant bus
depot in the centre of the city, while they waited for planning
permission buildings were rented out to artists, painters, sculptors
and musicians at cheap rents. They formed a bohemian community
and cafés, boutiques, record shops and bars began to spring up in
what was now known as Dublin’s alternative strip. Protests of the
community led to the cancellation of the bus depot. Hurray!
The regeneration of Temple Bar began. Today Temple Bar is home
to over 50 cultural centres, as well as boutiques, cafés, restaurants
and bars. A huge amount of the businesses here are family owned
and run. Temple Bar is a thriving community.
