A vision for
Public Art in
WinchburghPROJECT BRIEF Write a Public Art strategy for Winchburgh shaped by input from the local community. Organise a series of community events to gather research, ideas and steer from local people. With the Commissioning Group develop a strategy for producing future artworks as funding becomes available. Deliver one piece of Public Art in 2015 that acts as a ‘trailblazer’ for future artworks.

POTENTIAL ART THEMES
The two shale oil works in the village, Hopetoun
(c.1872) and Niddry Castle (c.1903) were
pioneering; they built housing including the
Rows, and were the first to use electricity.
Agriculture:
Before the shale industry Winchburgh was
primarily agriculture-focused. Being part of the
Hopetoun Estate the farms were advanced.
Mary Queen of Scots:
After her escape from captivity in Loch Leven
Castle, Mary Queen of Scots stayed at Niddry
Castle on 2 May 1568,
The Union Canal
The last canal to be built in the UK, hundreds of
Scottish and Irish navvies worked on building it
with every spadeful shifted by human toil.POTENTIAL ART THEMES Miners’ pastimes:
Pigeon racing, keeping and racing
greyhounds, Pitch and Toss, and bowling were
all popular pastimes.
Gardening & honey:
John Reid, author of ‘The Scots Gard’ner’ (1683)
was born at Niddry Castle. The walled garden
he planted and beehives villagers kept made
Winchburgh famous for honey.
Gala Day:
Still going today, Gala Days take place in
mining villages and were a chance to dress up
and focus on the children of the community.
The Railway:
The railway station opened in 1842, and
there were some eventful incidents during the
construction between the Irish and Scottish
workers. The station closed in 1930.Sport:
POTENTIAL ART THEMES
Winchburgh Albion Football Club produced
several well known football players, and from
the curling pond at Glendevon to the Niddry
Castle Golf Club Winchburgh has a history as a
place of sport:
Transportation:
Winchburgh had the first successful electric
railway in Scotland during the time of the oil
works. Soon it will once again have a station
Industry:
Dougal’s Brickworks was famed for its strong
bricks. Local men, after a night out were
known to sleep close to the warm kilns.
Battle of Bannockburn:
In 1314 the English army that had been
defeated at the Battle of Bannockburn tried to
get the Scottish into a fight at Winchburgh but
Douglas stayed on their flank side. The chase
continued all the way to Dunbar Castle.Themes:

COMMUNITY SPACE 3 - Gala Day
There is funding available for the community to improve the
land around the old post office and former Star & Garter
pub. There are aspirations to turn this into a community
garden. When these plans come to fruition this would be a
good location for artwork, and could be integrated into the
design of the garden.

AULD CATHIE
There are several historical sites in WInchburgh
which we felt could benefit from having an artwork
nearby. Auld Cathie and Niddry Castle can be seen
today, but their history isn’t immediately apparent
to the casual visitor. There is not much sign of
Niddry Castle Oil Works (except the bing it created),
so an artwork that draw’s people’s attention to
Winchburgh’s shale oil past would seem logical.
NIDDRY CASTLE
In these three locations it might be that the artworks OIL WORKS
need to be located slightly away from the actual
remains due to their historical significance and ease
of access.

UNION CANAL 2= - Industry
The Union Canal flows through Winchburgh between
Philpstoun and Broxburn. The towpath is a peaceful place
to visit and can form part of a circular walk around the
village. In some places the canal is in a cutting and there
is not much sign of the village, in other places views of
Winchburgh are possible.
We were attracted to this site by the variety of spaces along
the towpath and the opportunity to make people who are
passing along the canal more aware of Winchburgh as they
pass through.

We think it’s important to signal the points in and out of
Winchburgh and welcome people as they enter. This is an
GATEWAY
opportunity to convey to visitors and new residents the history EAST
of Winchburgh and its aspirations.
Walking around the village and studying the masterplan has led
us to locate a series of gateways. There is a north, east, south
and west gateway, and an extra westerly gateway further into
Winchburgh.
The scale of the artworks at these gateways may vary

CLAY PIT 3= - Miner’s Pastimes
3= - Sport
The claypit was originally part of Dougal’s Brickworks of
which nothing else remains. Residents we have met have
lots of stories about the claypit and brickworks, and we felt
that this was a promising site for an artwork. In the future
the claypit will form part of a new park for Winchburgh
making the site even more important to residents.

AULDCATHIE GARDENS
There is a passage of land that can not be built on because it
forms the route of the gas main pipe from the canal to south
of Glendevon Farm. It is proposed to keep this land as open
space, forming part of Glendevon Park & Auldcathie Gardens.
We feel that this would be a good place to position artworks
as it forms a new pedestrian route though Winchburgh and
has plenty of space for stopping enroute.

FUTURE STATION 3= - Transportation
3= - Industry
In 2018 trains will once again be stopping in Winchburgh.
After years without a station this will be an important new
service for the village and we feel that the station would
be a great location for an artwork. In this position the
artwork can welcome visitors, and returning residents, to
Winchburgh.
