There are reasons to be hopeful for the year 2021
– yes, we will return to our Temple home when the
time is right. In the mean time, in these more difficult
winter days we can use the tools at hand to continue
to connect with one another, and even make new
connections. Let me highlight a few opportunities:

• In North America, the Reform movement is well
established and widely appreciated. In Israel, our
movement struggles for acceptance with its rabbis
demanding the same recognition as their traditional
colleagues. This has not stopped congregations from
sprouting up across the country with passion and
care. On Saturday January 16th we will welcome

the depth of winter, when the trees are without leaves and
look dead, it is a time for introspection and growth. We

         Growing Together:
     Two Temples Across the Sea
           Saturday January 16, 2021

Ottawa has a long standing connection to the Israeli
communities of the north. At Temple we pride ourselves
in the personal connections that we have made. Temple
has been “paired’ with a new reform synagogue in
Kiryat Shmona, Israel. Kiryat Shmona is a city located
in the northern diestric of Israel on the western slopes
of the Hula Valley near the Lebanese border.

On Shabbat services on January 16th we will virtually
welcome Rabbi Orit Rozenblit from
the new Kehillah congregation in
Kiryat Shmona. Rabbi Rozenblit will
speak at Shabbat services about the
opportunities and challenges facing
Israeli Reform congregations. We
may even recognize our own early
days at Temple Israel!

Orit Rozenblit was born in Kibbutz Dovrat. Her passion
is exploring Jewish texts and finding their relevance for
our lives today, which is what set her on her Rabbinic
journey.

Temple Israel is Ottawa’s Reform congregation where Jewish Life Happens --committing ourselves to Kehilah
K’lal Yisrael, and Tikun Olam.

We are a dynamic and welcoming congregation (Kehilah) where varied Jewish experiences offer pathways to
learn and to experience God for all, respecting tradition and creating new celebrations.

We are an active liberal presence in the larger Jewish community (K’lal Yisrael).
We strive through social action to fulfill the Mitzvot of caring for others (Gimilut Chasadim) and repairing the
world (Tikun Olam).
