 The President’s Report
Now we are back in level one it is great to see our Club being used by golf and croquet
members and also used for social functions.
A big thank you to the generous volunteers who have come forward to help, especially
when Tony our Club Manager is away for June and July. (Tony’s contract is for 10
months of the year) The help in the bar, kitchen, gardens, and course work has been
appreciated. Wood sales so far have generated $10,000 this year. All the work has
been done by volunteers and is a great source of income for our Club in these difficult
times.
Our golf course is in very good condition thanks to our Green Keepers and volunteers.
We have had a good influx of green fee players who are discovering our course due to
the shutdown period because of Covid19.
A reminder, if playing or practicing golf please take a card as this allows us to contact
trace all players if called upon.
Tina Larsen, our ladies captain and kitchen organiser, has been a stalwart over many
years for her dedicated work. Tina is handing over the kitchen duties to Jenny
Chalmers and her subcommittee who will continue for the remainder of the year. Thank
you, Tina, for all your work over the years.
Three very successful functions have happened this month. This has brought people
together especially after the lock down and has proved to be a good money earner for
the Club. They have been Ken Edwards birthday party, Brendon Finns farewell and the
Curry Night.

 Private Functions
 • A small group of Ken and Kath’s family and friends celebrated Ken’s 75th.
Thanks to the volunteers who manned the Bar.
 • The Principal of Tairua School, Brendan Finn, was farewelled by a large number
of parents and their children. The primary school community feedback on the
evening and after the event has been great. Special thanks to Ian, Craig, John,
Ken, and Brian Fellow who were behind the bar for this farewell. The parents
provided a smorgasbord of finger food which was supplemented by Tina, Jill and
 Jenny’s deep-fried food.

SOCIAL/KITCHEN/CATERING REPORT

The kitchen is up and running again since the 2-month Covid close-down. Normal service
of toasted sandwiches, fried foods and pies will be available on Thursdays and Saturdays.
We have also seen several private functions and a club fund raising dinner which have
resulted in good bar takings.
The highly successful “Curry at the
 Club” night, postponed from March,
made a profit from food, bar and
 raffles of over $1,000.00. Look
 forward to dinners with different
themes in coming months. The next
event for your calendar is the July
Birthday Club. It will be a potluck
dinner on July 29th. Details and a
sign-up list are on the noticeboard.

On Tuesday mornings we have initiated a “Coffee Club” for retired golfing ladies, social
members, and their friends. Come along at 10.00am for a cuppa, a cookie, and a chat.
Active golfing ladies are welcome to join us on wet days. The charge of $3.00 each will
help fund kitchen equipment and maintenance.

It is with regret that I need to advise that Tina Larsen who has shouldered the role of both
kitchen/catering co-ordinator and ladies’ club captain since the last AGM has handed in her
apron and stepped down from catering duties. She has been a kitchen stalwart for many
years, and I thank her sincerely for her hard work and cheerfulness whether catering for a
crowd of hungry golfers after a tournament or gracefully hosting an evening event for a
private function. In the interim I am stepping into her shoes and feel very relieved and
grateful to have a group of Tairua golfing women who have agreed to join a committee to
assist with the various catering and social functions that have always been a significant part
of the life of the club.

Jenny Chalmers
Social Convenor

Many guests asked for the Mango Kulfi recipe, so I have added it to the end of the
newsletter.

GOLF CROQUET REPORT
As soon as level 2 was announced we resumed golf croquet. A bit different to usual we
managed to keep social distance, did not have a draw and stayed in the same 4 for both
games. Lots of cleaning of equipment etc. but it really did work and as usual we had fun.
Level 1 and back to normal with record numbers of 0ver 20 for the past couple of weeks.
Despite the weather the courts are in excellent condition thanks to Brian W and Rick, your
hard work is much appreciated.

Golf Croquet Captain
 GOLF REPORTS
Well an interesting year, firstly an awesome summer then Covid and now a wet
winter…the joys of living in paradise. We have where weather permits, been attempting to
play golf but for some the new handicapping system and the wet weather is playing havoc
with their game. All I can say is it will eventually level out.
Being positive, July is about to start, the days are getting longer, and it hasn’t snowed. To
all the Vets in the club, male and female, a couple of dates for the calendar
Monday 20th July final round robin of pennants at Pauanui on 20th July get your names
on the board or email me before the 15th July please…all welcome but 6 will be selected
for the team. $25 a head including lunch.
August 16/17 sees the Coromandel Pacific pairs for Vets, hosted by Tairua this year on
the Sunday at home then the Monday at Mercury Bay. Day prizes as well as overall
prizes. Entry details on Web Site as well as in club rooms.
We will be attempting a Meat pack in the third week of July watch out for email closer to
date.
Stay dry and where possible enjoy the immaculate course that Tairua offers
Bill Boon
Men’s Club Captain and Vets Convenor.
Finally we got started on Tuesday 9th with a mixed 9/18 hole players social day with 33
players attending, men and ladies, playing 9 holes and then having drinks and nibbles for
a couple of hours Great start to “Welcome back to Tuesday Golf”'.
The two Tuesdays since have seen a good attendance of players both 9- and 18-hole
rounds. We have shortened our programme for the rest of the season, all BOPTV
HomeLink’s and Pennants Competitions have been cancelled for this year, and one or
two of our home competitions have also been put aside for this year, but we hope to be
able to fit in both the Strokeplay and Matchplay Club Championships before the end of the
season, when the weather improves.

Shootout information from the Sponsors Colliers & Wilsons
 Shootout 2020
As with golf, the shootout has been disrupted by Covid 19 lockdowns. Member's handicaps
have also been readjusted with the change to the new handicapping system. Golfers will
notice that they are playing off a lower handicap than last month. This will mean that if you
score close to a net 71 or 72 you have played to your handicap instead of 68 or 69.
In the light of this we have decided to change the qualifying criteria this year only.
Those players who have played one or more rounds will automatically be eligible for
qualification.
To play in the Shootout finals on the 20th September, you need to have paid to the club $10
by Saturday August 29th.
After the 29 August if there are spare spaces in the qualifying lists it will be opened up to
others on a first in first served basis.
The sponsorship will be similar to past years, although without the more generous
contributions made you members, the prizes will not be as valuable
The finals will operate as usual without top qualifiers. The 1st and 2nd divisions will be
decided by a draw.
In the 18 holers, the top man and lady from each division will play off no 12 to decide who
wins the Wyatt Trophies. Nine holers just play as normal
2021, back to normal. Eligible Qualifiers are on display in the clubhouse.

July Birthday Club

It is the middle of winter, and as the club has done for a number of years, it is time to
celebrate the birthdays of everyone who was born in July. Get your glad rags out and cook
up a treat for a shared pot luck dinner.

Wednesday July 29th at 6.00pm in the Clubhouse
Put your name on the list on the noticeboard with an indication of whether you are bringing
a main dish (meat, vegetable, pasta, or rice dish) or a dessert. There is no entry cost but
there will be a great birthday raffle and the bar will be open so you will need a bit of cash.
Numbers are limited so get your names up quickly.
Sssssh! Someone well-loved is celebrating a 90th birthday and there are others reaching
good numbers too.
