outh Africa is the largest country in Southern Africa and the 25th-largest country in the world by
land area. With over 57 million people, it is the world’s 24th-most populous nation. Its economy is the
second-largest in Africa, and the 34th-largest in the world.
The South African economy is the second largest in Africa after Nigeria. It also has a relatively high gross
domestic product per capita (US$ 13,850) compared to other countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
Eyewear registered another year of positive volume and current value growth in 2018 in South Africa.
With the majority of the South African population comprised of low-income consumers, demand for eyewear is
largely limited to mid- and high-income groups.
Sunglasses registered dynamic value growth in 2018 in South Africa, with sales driven by fashion-conscious
consumers seeking to copy the styles of their favourite celebrities. Funky styles in bold colours remain at the
forefront of sunglass fashion, with young consumers especially keen on wearing brightly coloured frames and
lenses. Optical shops remain dominant in the country regarding the distribution of all categories of eyewear.
The main reason for this, is because that South African consumers generally demand an eye test before com-
mitting to the purchase of spectacles or contact lenses. The presence of an optician and/or an optometrist in
optical shops gives these retailers a very strong advantage over other channels.

The Event
OPTICA SOUTH AFRICA is
a recognized business event that allows
international operators to meet local professionals from South
Africa and neighboring countries. In the Congress Center of the
Hilton Sandton Hotel, in addition to a large exhibition area, during
the two days of the event, OPTICA SOUTH AFRICA will also host a
series of conferences and meetings on the most current topics of the
South African market and of the developments of the eyewear industry.

Hilton Sandton Hotel
The Hilton Sandton 5-star hotel is located in the heart of Sandton’s business district.
Guests have easy access to the Gautrain, Stock Exchange, Global Banking Institutions,
Nelson Mandela Square and the Sandton Convention Center. It features a gym, a swim-
ming pool and landscaped gardens. The property offers modern rooms with a view of the
