JOHN’S BLOG: September 2021
Telling Others About Our Church
I love being a Presbyterian. I love our representative form of government that gives
freedom of individual conscience within the context of representation. I love the roots of
the Presbyterian church in the Reformed tradition of faith that began when the Catholic
priest Martin Luther posted his “Ninety-five Theses” on the door of the Wittenberg Chapel.
These theses challenged the corrupt practices of church leaders in his day. The Reformed Church’s motto
became, “The Church reformed and always reforming” (email me if you want the Latin version). And I love the
liturgy (order of service) of the Presbyterian Church that includes ritualized prayers and responses as well as
the freedom to adapt our order of service as led by the Holy Spirit.
What I love about the Presbyterian Church outweighs what I don’t love about being a Presbyterian. But one of
the things I don’t love about being Presbyterian is our difficulty with sharing with others our love of our Triune
God and of being Presbyterian. Either because we don’t want to offend them, or because we are
uncomfortable with blowing our own horn. We, as Presbyterians, often shy away from sharing our experience
of the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. This is particularly true in the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA)
of which SPC is a member church.
What might surprise you is that I say this, not merely to point my finger at other Presbyterians, but to confess
my own complicity with this same mindset. I, too, find it difficult to share my love of being a Christian--who
happens to be Presbyterian--with others. Since my ordination in 1982, the one duty of ministry with which I
have struggled most is asking persons to visit—and join my church. Why? Because I don’t want to push
anybody to do something they don’t want to do. I don’t want to alienate them as a friend. Most importantly, I
am afraid that others will see me as a shameless salesman trying to push something on them for my own
profit. I fear that such would communicate that going to church is not a matter of the heart and spirit, but a
marketing contest.
Recently I have reflected upon the absurdity of my assumptions. For one, if I find
meaning and value in my faith journey with Jesus Christ within the Presbyterian
Church, why do I need to apologize for it to others? Other persons outside of church
share all sorts of matters about their lives with me and that does not offend me. Why
would I think I would offend them by sharing what is important to me?
Two, what is so wrong with being a salesperson for the Lord? My late father-in-law
was tremendously successful over the years in sales. He was a good and honest man
who said to me, “I would never want to sell anything to another person that I did not
think could make their life better.” Perhaps being a salesperson for the Lord is a good
thing when done in an honest and respectful way?
Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make Disciples of
all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And teaching
them to obey everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the
age.” Matthew 28:18-20

We’d Love to Have You Join Us . . .
To those newly worshipping with us and those who have been visiting for a while, we
warmly welcome you to our congregation. You are invited to join us for any and all of the
activities and opportunities we provide. Please let us know if we can serve you in any way.
We also extend an invitation to unite with this church. Periodically we offer a class called
“Discover SPC” that will provide the opportunity for you to become familiar with our church.
The next class is scheduled for Sunday, September 12th, 11 am-2 pm. Lunch will be
served. While this class is not required, it is encouraged for those interested in church membership. We will
welcome new members to the congregation on September 26.
Please register for this class by calling the church office. If you are interested in membership without
attending the class, let the church office know and you will be included in the new member welcome.
If you are interested in a conversation about membership, do not hesitate to contact Pastor John Hartman by
calling the church office at 882-2505 any time.
Window on the Session
August
Gary Owens was tasked with the job of writing a policy for the long term use of church property
to include both dedicated and recurring use. He presented for approval revisions to the current
Day Use of Church Property and Day Use Request/Approval Form and the new Long Term Use of
Church Property and Long Term Use Request/Approval Form. A few minor modifications were
identified and all forms were approved with these modifications.
The Worship Committee submitted a thoughtful report regarding our worship service options
detailing elements for consideration – the message (minister and liturgist), music, ushers, AV team (for in-
person and broadcast). A meeting to present findings to the congregation and receive comments will soon
be scheduled after the worship service. With the uptick in Covid in our area, we will once again urge all to
wear masks for in person worship but will NOT reinstate earlier Covid protocols of no singing and spacing.
The Session approved a recommendation to send a memorial for Dr. Robert S. Dendy to Trinity Presbyterian
Church in Laurinburg, NC. Dr. Dendy served as the pastor of Seneca Presbyterian for 23 years.
Christian Education advised that Sunday School resumes on September 12th. The Sparkhouse curriculum will
once again be used for the children.
Fellowship reported that a catered meal will be served after the Kirking of the Tartans on October 31th.
Mission and Outreach reported that several charities are under consideration for Adams, Byrd, Endowment
and Mission Fund distribution. Wild Hearts Equine Therapy center made a presentation in August to describe
what they do and tell us about a new covered arena that will be built to minimize a significant number of
weather dependent cancellations. A presentation about the New Horizons Social Club to be built to serve the
Utica area will be made at the September meeting. Ideas for additional projects were solicited.
Stewardship season will kick off in October.
Our Church Secretary, Robin, is requesting office volunteer help from the congregation.
Church Growth Committee will become a permanent Session committee with increasing membership as the
primary vision of the church for the next several years. Dave Hartman reported a successful Shag lesson
event as an outreach to potential new members. There will be a Fall Festival on September 26 th. During
October, the congregation will be encouraged to bring a friend, neighbor or family member.

On September 26 , from 4-7 pm, all SPC
members, neighbors and friends are invited to
celebrate the reopening of the church. This will
be a great time to socialize with everyone. Enjoy
line dancing, children’s activities, live music by
Jeremy, food tent, food truck and
free hot dogs for children.
Please come and invite a friend!!
Attention Plant Enthusiasts
As a lover of plants, do you find it difficult to throw away cuttings
when they can be rooted and form a new plant? Or do you divide
over-grown varieties only to KEEP the divisions? Soon the mere
QUANTITY of plants is overwhelming!!
We invite YOU to participate in a plant project at SPC!
On Saturday, October 23rd, donated plants and rooted cuttings will
be offered to our church family free of charge…. Just for the joy of
sharing plants we love and to minimize our “inventory” at home.
We encourage you to participate both in donating some wonderful
plant varieties but also in “shopping” for a plant to take home!
There is no charge for plants but we will all have an opportunity to
make a VOLUNTARY DONATION to be shared equally among three
of our own active and commendable SPC organizations: Days for
Girls, Oconee United Ministries and Ripple of One.
Please let Beverly Crabtree know if you have any questions and please let her know if you will be
contributing plants so we can plan for sufficient area to properly display each variety. More details later.

I would like to thank our committee members and everyone else involved with Shag
Dance Lessons on Friday, August 13th. Our committee of Carol Hartman, Carolyn
Palmer and JoAnn Hill prepared and delivered food, set up and cleaned up with the
help of their husbands. I would also like to give a big thank you to Glenn McCants and
Robin and Joey Smith for installing our banner, in addition to Robin’s many other
contributions. Lavonne Moon was kind enough to make reminder phone calls and
Jonathan and James made the Chapter House sparkling clean.
Again thanks to all involved for making Shag night such a huge success. Vicki Andy

P urse Hello! It is my hope that everyone is having a safe and
enjoyable summer. As you all know, this can be a busy time of
N year and just like any time of the year, accidents can happen. In the
unlikely event that such occurs and the assistance of a device, such as a
pair of crutches or a wheelchair, is needed, Seneca Presbyterian now has a
‘Medical Supply Closet’. Items can be borrowed for the length of time
needed and returned following such. Feel free to take a look at what is
available and ask either Robin or Ernie Lombard, Parish Nurse, for
assistance. Remember it’s a first come first serve. Stay safe and enjoy this
fun time of year! Regards, Ernie
We are excited to welcome children back to the Sunday School
classrooms beginning on September 12th! Our classes will meet
downstairs in the Craft Room and the Temple Room from 9 to
9:50. We look forward to using the Sparkhouse Whirl curriculum
which includes lessons, crafts, music and short videos to prompt
lively discussions! The dedicated teachers have missed the
children this past year and are ready to welcome them back! A
letter to families with more details will be sent out the first week of September. Please call Susan Caldwell
(882-7916) or Kathy Gerner (903-3455) with any questions.
Bring a Friend or Family Member to Church Month!
We are proud of our congregation, our pastor, our giving ministries and our newly renovated
facility. We want to share it with others! That’s why the full month of October has been
designated as BAFFMTCM! (Bring a friend or family member to church month). We are
working on a plan to make special note of their visit without “swarming” them. While visitors
and family members are always welcome we want to make this month special. So if you have
any ideas that you think might work please contact any member of the Task Force so that we
can consider them. Let’s share the joy and love of our faith community with everyone. Start
making the list and talking to those of your list to join us! ALL ARE WELCOME HERE!

Finance Committee "On the Horizon" Fall 2021 Update
With summer winding down, the Finance Committee wanted to take the opportunity to let
everyone know about several upcoming activities and events that we will be working on and
sharing with the church community.
• During September, our efforts will center on preparing a preliminary budget for 2022 which considers the
planning for where our financial resources should best be allocated to serve God's calling for our church.
• This will lead us into October, when our annual Stewardship Campaign kicks off and where we look to you
to tell us what you will do to support the many programs and challenges. You'll hear much more about
that in the next Presby Press so stay tuned.
• Once the campaign has finished up, we will take all of that information and make the committee's
recommendations to the Session in late November or early December. This allows the final budget to be
completed for next January and our church's Annual Report.
Please know we take our role as stewards of the finances with humility and purpose. Thank you all for
entrusting us with this continuing responsibility.
With grateful hearts,
Finance Committee: Ann Castle, Dave Hartman, Don Lesley, Paul Laroche, John Wilson and Jon Young.
Your prayers are requested for Alga
Our Sunday School children and adults have sent financial support through World Vision to
Alga and her family in Ethiopia for seven years. At this time, the Tigray region where she
lives has suffered famine and warfare in addition to the pandemic. The horrendous fighting
in that area is especially troubling. Because of that danger, the normal communication with
her village is on hold so we do not know the situation there. Please keep Alga and her family
and all who suffer in your prayers. May God protect Alga and all of His children.Page 8 Presby Press

Day at the Garden
Bountiful Beans and Tantalizing Tomatoes
The Ripple of One children were on a beginning-of-school break in August so we welcomed some of our own
Sunday School kids to the garden for a scavenger hunt and time to harvest beans, tomatoes and rosemary!
We met on a warm Wednesday morning and finished up with frozen fruit bars to help cool off!
During the next couple of weeks, we were delighted to take bags of green beans and cherry tomatoes over to
Our Daily Bread to supplement their lunch offerings to the community. When we meet with Ripple kids in
September, it will be time to dig up sweet potatoes and plant some cool weather crops! We are blessed to
have an opportunity to share and enjoy the SPC Garden!

SPC Shared Blessings Pantry
The title says it all…the congregation of SPC is
sharing their food with our neighbors who
need our help. But as you can see from the
photo, sometimes the pantry is not as full as it
could be.
The church fills the box on Mondays and
Fridays, but in between those days, if you happen to go shopping and pick
up a few extra items, please drive by the box and put them inside. Our
neighbors in need love peanut butter crackers, canned fruit, granola bars,
bottled water, easy-to-open containers of any type of food you think might
be nutritional.
We are all blessed when we help others. Thank you!

Very special women have proved to be an invaluable help to the church in general and to Robin in
particular. You may have spoken with them on the phone or been greeted by them. They each come one
morning a week to answer the phone, greet people, and help with various office tasks. This frees Robin to
do work she is specifically trained to do. These women and the days they normally serve are:
Sally Fortune – Tuesday and Lavonne Moon – Thursday
We thank them and encourage you to do the same.
Would you be interested in volunteering to work in the church office on Monday and
Wednesday’s? On occasion, it is necessary for the church secretary to be away from the
office (vacation time, sickness, etc.). If you have some computer skills, and are familiar with
typical office equipment and would like to volunteer, or if you have questions or would be
interested in helping, please give the church office a call at 882-2505.
