St. Mary’s Foundation’s mission is to improve and enhance services provided December 2018
for patients and residents of St. Mary’s Health Care System and to ensure
these services are available to those who need them most by providing
opportunities for giving to the community.

Dear Friends of St. Mary’s,
With 2018 coming to an end, I would like to take this opportunity
to say thank you for making this year incredibly successful for
St. Mary’s Health Care System and St. Mary’s Foundation! This
success would not be possible without the generous support
of our donors. On behalf of the entire ministry, thank you for
helping St. Mary’s as we continually strive to live our mission to
be a compassionate and transforming healing presence within
our communities.
I am excited to announce that St. Mary’s Health Care System was named 2018 Large
Hospital of the Year by the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals at its 35th Annual
Conference held on October 10-12. St. Mary’s was chosen for the award based on its
commitment to the preservation of Georgia’s network of community hospitals as well
as the future of medicine. This is the fourth time in 12 years St. Mary’s received this
recognition! I am extremely proud of this achievement and want to congratulate all
of our colleagues, physicians and volunteers who helped make this honor possible.
For the fourth year in its four-year history, the Internal Medical Resident Program at
St. Mary’s filled all ten openings for its new class of medical residents. The new class of
residents began practicing at St. Mary’s on July 1, 2018, shortly after the initial class of MEET OUR BOARD MEMBERS
residents, who began practicing with us in 2015, completed their three-year residency
program and graduated in June 2018. It has been a privilege to be a part of the process 2018 St. Mary’s Health Care System Board of Directors
of helping this first class of residents become physicians, and I am excited to see the

St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital is celebrating the 5th anniversary of moving into
its beautiful facility! The replacement hospital officially opened its doors for operation 2018 St. Mary’s Foundation Board of Directors
in November 2013, and what an unbelievable five years it has been. Good Samaritan

Welcome New Foundation Director, Ansley Martin
St. Mary’s Foundation is very excited to announce that after an extensive search,
Ansley Martin has been named St. Mary’s Foundation Director. Ansley comes to St.
Mary’s from the Shepherd Center Foundation where she has served as the Senior
Major and Planned Gift Officer since 2015 and various other roles at Shepherd since
2008. Ansley began her philanthropy career with St. Mary’s Foundation in 2004
working under Director Crysty Odom.
Ansley was born at St. Mary’s Hospital and grew up in Athens, Georgia. She attended
the University of Georgia where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. Ansley
and her husband John have two sons, Miles (age 9) and Turner (age 6).
Ansley began her role as Director in mid-September. Stop by the Foundation office

The St. Mary’s 18th Annual Gala was held on September 22, 2018, at Athens Country Club. Guests enjoyed a silent auction,
live auction with Auctioneer Sam Williamson, dinner and dancing to All In One. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors

Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer
St. Mary’s Foundation is blessed, humbled, and grateful for its partnership 1
with Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer (BBBC). BBBC, the charity which raises
money for the treatment and cure of breast cancer after founder Teresa
Abbott’s winning battle with breast cancer, has donated over $469,000
to St. Mary’s Foundation’s Radiology and Breast Health Fund since 2009.
The growth of BBBC’s success has been tremendous! Over the past 9 years, BBBC
has grown from one golf tournament a year to a thriving, event-filled organization. In

record-breaking $105,000 to St. Mary’s Foundation.

The Foundation is excited to see how much BBBC raised in 2018 from their numerous
fundraising events (see pictures)! Each of these fundraising efforts are planned, managed,
and worked by Jay and Teresa Abbott, founders of BBBC, Dwight and Leslie Standridge
and many other BBBC volunteers. A simple thank you does not express the Foundation’s
appreciation for BBBC!
1 – On July 9, 2018, BBBC held their annual golf tournament at The Georgia Club, which pairs
golfers with Georgia Bulldog Football players and coaches. Pictured: Founder Jay Abbott

welcomes the golfers, players and coaches before tee-off (BBBC tournament featured on
georgiadogs.com).
2 – BBBC held its second tournament of the summer on August 18th and 19th at Currahee
Golf Club in Toccoa, GA (pictured). This two day, 36-hole, four-ball tournament with gross
scoring included closest to the pin and longest drive contests. All teams playing were
flighted for second round play on Sunday, with the top three teams in each flight earning a
cash payout.
3 – BBBC partnered with the University of Georgia Ice Dawgs Hockey Club for its first ever 5
“Pink in the Rink” hockey game on October 5th. For this specific game, the Ice Dawgs wore a
special edition breast cancer jersey that was auctioned off after the game along with several
other UGA hockey items, and all 1,500 fans were given a “Pink in the Rink” rally towel to wave
during the game.
4 – BBBC founder and breast cancer survivor Teresa Abbot was asked to do the puck drop at
the start of the “Pink in the Rink” hockey game.
5 – The UGA Homecoming football game versus Vanderbilt was held Saturday, October
6th, the day after the hockey game. The UGA Spike Squad and the UGA Paint Line painted
themselves in pink to represent BBBC during the game.
6 – The UGA Spike Squad designed two sets of special BBBC themed spiked shoulder pads 6
that were auctioned off after the game.
Giving Societies
Established in 2005, The 1938 Society is a philanthropic group of individuals who have come together with a shared
commitment to the continual enhancement of patient care and service quality at St. Mary’s. The 1938 Society is open
to those individuals donating a minimum of $10,000 to strengthen St. Mary’s facilities and services.
The 1938 Society name commemorates the year in which the Sisters came to Athens, at the request of area leaders,
to reopen St. Mary’s. The society supports today’s leaders who represent those same values.
