St. Mary’s Foundation’s mission is to improve and enhance services provided December 2017
for patients and residents of St. Mary’s Health Care System and to ensure
these services are available to those who need them most by providing
opportunities for giving to the community.

Foundation Funds in Action – Neurointerventional Biplane
The Biplane System The Physicians
Dr. Neil Woodall (pictured below), a new,
St. Mary’s has made a significant advancement in the diagnosis and treatment highly trained physician who specializes

Currently, stroke patients who arrive at St. Mary’s with blood clots in the brain
may need to be airlifted to major metropolitan hospitals for clot removal
procedures. Since up to 2 million brain cells die each minute once a stroke
begins, time is crucial for a stroke patient. With a highly trained neurosurgeon,
the biplane has the ability to perform these lifesaving procedures right here
in Athens, Georgia. The time saved by receiving this type of treatment closer
to home often leads to improved recovery and less long-term brain damage.
In addition, families won’t have to worry about traveling outside the Athens
community to be with their loved ones.

There are more than 1,300 ischemic strokes caused by blood clots annually
in St. Mary’s service area. Since St. Mary’s serves as a hub for rural hospitals
in surrounding communities, potentially hundreds of lives will be touched
every year with the biplane.
Construction and renovations to the biplane suite began in
September 2017 to accommodate the new system. On October
16th, the biplane arrived and installations began. During this time,
the Interventional Radiology staff traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, to the

St. Mary’s completed the installation and began using the biplane on
November 13th, with Dr. Neil Woodall completing his first diagnostic
procedure on November 15th. Beginning January 2018, St. Mary’s will
officially begin performing neurointerventional procedures.

Established in 2005, The 1938 Society is a philanthropic group of individuals who have come together with a shared
commitment to the continual enhancement of patient care and service quality at St. Mary’s. The 1938 Society is open
to those individuals donating a minimum of $10,000 to strengthen St. Mary’s facilities and services.
The 1938 Society name commemorates the year in which the Sisters came to Athens, at the request of area leaders,

families to gather and be with their loved ones during their stay at the Hospice

purchase raffle tickets to vote for their favorite pumpkin. Through raffle ticket purchases, Dr. Stuart Thomas (pictured) and Thomas Eye Center donated over
$2,000 to St. Mary’s Radiology and Breast Health Services.
3. Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer hosted many successful fundraising events this year including their third Annual Summer Golf Classic on August 19-20 and
their 13th Annual Golf Tournament on July 10th, which pairs University of Georgia Football players and coaches with each golf team (Pictured: Founders

4. Throughout the year, St. Mary’s Foundation chooses departments to honor and celebrate and say thank you for all they do for St. Mary’s Health Care
System. St. Mary’s Laboratory was chosen as the March 2017 Department of the Month (pictured).

host this event benefitting St. Mary’s Radiology and Breast Health Services.
6. For the third year in a row, The Rook and Pawn hosted its “24 Hour Black Friday Board Game Marathon” to raise money for St. Mary’s Children’s Services. Last
year’s fundraiser raised over $1,600 which allowed St. Mary’s Foundation to purchase new PlayStations for the newly renovated pediatric rooms (Pictured:
