Chairman’s Welcome
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all here tonight for our 5th Annual
Tipperary Star Awards. After a very successful year in 2019, I would like to
extend my welcome and congratulations to all our Clubs, Schools and County
Award Winners. You will see throughout the evening, the fantastic array of
talent we have in our county and I wonder what’s left for other counties.
I would like to welcome Breeda and John our own two Presidents who are very
hands on when it comes to Athletics especially in Tipperary.
I would like to thank, Cllr Michael Murphy, Cathaoirleach, of Tipperary County Council, Mr. Mossie Wolfe,
Chairman of Munster AAI who is often seen officiating at Tipperary T&F events, Mr. Liam Hennessy,
Athletics Ireland High Performance & Technical Committee and the one and only, Mrs. Georgina Drumm,
President of Athletics Ireland, for supporting our Tipperary Awards Night.
I would also like to thank Brother Dooley who has given a lifetime to athletics and still keeps us informed of
Athletic events, especially with what is happening abroad, Mr Colin Byrne our Regional Development Officer
who keeps us updated with National and Regional Coaching workshops and events and Michael Guinan, who
gives athletics a major blast on Tipp Mid-West Radio every Saturday morning. I would like to thank you all for
attending this evening. These people have been very supportive of Tipperary Athletics down through the years.
I would like to welcome you all here tonight, to honor the recipients of the 2019 Tipperary Star Awards in
Track & Field and Cross Country. Tonight belongs to the Stars and my congratulations to each and every one
of them. Huge credit must go to their Parents, Guardians, Coaches and Club Officers who give so much of
their time to these athletes and to promote the sport of Athletics in our County. I would also like to thank these
athletes and others like them for the enjoyment that they bring to all of us each time they compete.
To all our Competition Secretaries, PRO’s and Top Table, I would like to extend my appreciation for all your
assistance and help throughout last year and in the organization of this Awards Night again this year, and a
special thanks to Aisling, Pauline and Jim for the enormous amount of work behind the scenes.
In Tipperary we are fortunate to have the finest bunch of officials in the country when it comes to
Road Running, Track & Field, Schools and Cross Country. I would also like to thank all our Clubs for their
help in running each event.
Finally, on behalf of Tipperary AAI County Board I would like to wish you all a very enjoyable evening, safe
home afterwards and a very enjoyable Athletic year for 2020.

My name is Siobhán Whelan, and I am a Juvenile U18
runner with Clonmel AC trained by Anthony
Moynihan. I have been running since the age of 11 but
only started taking training and
competitions seriously about 2 years ago. At the start of
2019, I competed in the XC Schools Competitions;
coming 2nd in East Munster and 5th in Munster but
because of injury, I couldn't compete in the All-Ireland's.
I continued to compete in Track & Field events for
1500m and 3000m, achieving PB's of 4:51 and 10:39 in
Best Juvenile Cross Country
these distances at the All-Ireland's; just shy of the
podium. Last season, I also competed in the Clubs' XC
events, and achieved 5th in both Munster U18 and
U19 competitions on what proved to be tough courses,
proceeding on the Munster team to the All-Ireland
Championships. After a disappointing run in Abbotstown
Siobhan Whelan at the Even-Age Championships, I went on to achieve a
Clonmel A.C. top 12 finish and a Munster girls team gold in the U19
race at the Uneven-Age Championships over 4000m in
Dunboyne, Co. Meath. I'm really looking forward to
improving my performances in both XC and Track &
Field this coming season!
In the Cross-Country Season just gone by, Tom Walshe
was 2nd U16 and 4th U15 in the Munster Cross Country
Championships. His team won both Munster titles.
With a 6th place in Dunboyne at the National Uneven
Age Cross Country Championships, he helped the
Nenagh team to the silver Club medals, Tipperary took
the County bronze medals and his Munster team took
the Provincial title. His 9th position in the All-Ireland
Schools Junior Cross-Country race in Clongowes
Wood College saw Tom win his first Irish singlet. Next
Tom Walshe Friday will see Tom and his Nenagh CBS team-mates

Nenagh Olympic A.C. Growing can be hell and because of having more
joint pain than the old coach running became out of
the question. The pool and the bike became very
familiar and eventually the most of a year later he
began to get back on track, finishing 2 nd in the
Munster 1500m but running out of time for a
meaningful assault at national level.
Still lacking an endurance base because of missing
the previous winter Cian’s 2019 Cross Country debut
came in out of age U16 Munster Championships in
Limerick finishing 3rd individually and the Nenagh
Club team finishing 1st.
In the U15 race in Conna Cork, Cian was back to the
top of the podium with the individual Munster title
and another gold with the Nenagh Olympic club
team. He won another Munster title with Nenagh in
the u16 Munster Cross Country relays in Beaufort.
His 4th individual place in the All Ireland u15 race in
Dunboyne finished the Cross Country season on a
high note, and he led Munster to win the provincial
battle, Nenagh to win 2nd in the Club competition and
Tipperary 3rd County. It was one of those great days
that only happens in Cross Country. This year with a
decent aerobic base built up, who knows, anything is
possible!Tipperary Star Award Winners 2019

round throw of 66metres , improving on it in round 2 with a throw of 67.35
and going for broke with the third attempt only to catch the cage gate on
the way out towards the sector . Sean was seeded 24th before the
competition , finishing up in 18th place overall . A great experience and

Moycarkey Coolcroo
A.C
The highlight of his year was competing for Ireland in
Sweden at the European U20 Championships , opening
his account with his best first round throw of 66metres ,
improving on it in round 2 with a throw of 67.35 and
going for broke with the third attempt only to catch the
cage gate on the way out towards the sector . Sean was
seeded 24th before the competition , finishing up in 18th
place overall . A great experience and competition for him
looking towards his future with Hammer throwing.
Sean is sitting his leaving cert exam later this year and
Sean Mockler hopes to pursue his studies with hammer throwing on a
Moycarkey Coolcroo scholarship to USA.

Emby Walsh, Carrick-On-Suir has given a lifetime of service
to athletics. She is one of our most experienced leading ladies
and mentor and we would be lost without her. As well as being
the mainstay of juvenile athletics in Carrick-On-Suir A.C., she
finds time to coach, mentor and nurture her athletes, fund raise,
act as Assistant County Juvenile Competition Secretary, help
organize the Tipperary Primary Schools Cross Country
Championships annually and officiate at County, Munster and
National fixtures. On top of this, she is also deeply involved in
Community Games at parish and County level.
Emby Walsh About Emby
Carrick-On-Suir In 2010, Emby was awarded the ‘Sean Lyons Sports Executive
A.C.
Award’ at the Annerville Awards night in Clonmel, in
Hall of Fame
recognition of her huge input into sport at many levels. In
athletics she has dedicated many years of her life at Club,
County, Munster & National level. In 1985 Emby was the main
motivator behind the reforming of Carrick on Suir Athletic
Club and in the intervening years the club has made a major
contribution to athletics, not just locally, but also at County,
National and International level. For a number of years, the
club had been number one in Tipperary and Munster. Athletes
under her tutelage have won many honours up to and including
International level. This was no accident as Emby leaves no
stone unturned in doing the absolute best for her athletes. In
pursuit of this she was one of the first people, in Irish athletics,
to successfully complete a level 3 coaching course. This was
the highest level achievable at that time. Emby also received a
National Community Games Area Volunteer award in 2017 for
all her tireless Community Games work over the years both at
area level in Carrick-On-Suir and at county, provincial and
national level. Her dedication to Community Games knows no
bounds and her athletes have won countless National
community games medals over the years.
On the administration side, Emby has been involved with the
Tipperary Athletics board for several years in various positions.
She served for many years as the County PRO and the
Competition Secretary for Juvenile Indoor and Track & Field
activities until 2012. She was also a member of the Munster
Athletics Board taking on the role of Treasurer where sheTipperary “Hall of Fame” Award 2019

brought the Munster finances from red to black during her reign.
Outside of the County she has been part of the management
structure, on many occasions, with Irish teams both at home and
overseas. One of her fondest memories must be in 2003, when
she officiated at the World Special Olympics in Dublin.
Apart from her huge input and commitment to athletics Emby
has been and still is involved in many other activities down the
years as the list below demonstrates
