Host Cities
Belo Horizonte
Belo Horizonte, also referred to as Beagá or BH in Portuguese, is known for the beauty
of its green areas and city-planning, along with a range of both cultural activities and
the natural wonders of the Serra do Curral surrounding the city. Built among hills
and surrounded by mountains, the city is encompassed with nature through the green
initiatives the local government has pursued with urban planning. With many activities
to offer in combination with the unique urban planning methods, Belo Horizonte has
several reasons for its consistent reference as one of the Latin American metropolises
that provides the best quality of life.
Brasília
Brasília, the capital of Brazil, was developed in 1956 as an ultra modern city in the
center of the country as an effort to transfer the capital of the country from the coastal
city of Rio de Janeiro to a more central location. Hoping to create a modern and
unique city President Juscelino Kubischek (1956-1961) held a public competition
among Brazilian architects and planners for the new capital. Urbanist Lucio Costa
and architect Oscar Niemeyer gave Brasília its distinctive look. Brasília is the only city
constructed, or largely developed, in the 20th century to have been declared a World
Heritage site by UNESCO.
Cuiabá
Located in the exact geographic center of South America such that it is 2,000km
from both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Cuiabá is the capital of Mato Grosso.
Established in 1719 during the Brazilian Gold Rush, Cuiabá houses many historical
landmark buildings from the time period. Compared to the other host cities Cuiabá
has a significantly smaller population. Despite the smaller size and more remote
location Cuiabá is a reasonably large tourist city due to its location in the middle of
the savannahs of the Cerrado, the wetlands of the Pantanal, and the Amazon.
Curitiba
Curitiba, the capital of the state of Paraná, is now the most populous city in the southern
region of Brazil with 1.8 million inhabitants. Since being declared the capital, Curitiba
has undergone several rounds of urban planning to avoid uncontrolled growth. In
doing so Curitiba has become an international role model on how to deal with
growth. Additionally, it offers a high quality of life, as a reasonably wealthy and sizable
city. Although not considered as beautiful of a city as the other popular Brazilian
tourist destinations, these traits set Curitiba apart from other cities, contributing to its
reputation of providing such a good quality of life.

Host Cities
Fortaleza
Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará, means ‘fortress’ in Portuguese. The city owes its name
to the Schoonenborch Fort which was built in 1649 when the region was controlled by
the Dutch. When the Portuguese reclaimed control over the region the fort remained
and thus was born Fortaleza. The fort now serves a local headquarter for the military.
With expansive beaches Fortaleza has been a main tourist destination in the north east
of Brazil for several years. However, it has also developed as an important economic
center with a densely populated metropolitan area with more than 2.4 million residents.
Manaus
The exact location of the city of Manaus is in itself a extraordinary attraction – with
the confluence of the Negro River and the Solimões River creating an odd yet majestic
sight. The muddy brown waters of the Amazon and the dark colored water of the
Negro river flow side by side for more than 18 kilometers without mixing, creating an
amazing sight. Manaus steadily evolved into the capital of the state of Amazonas and
eventually into the metropolis of the Amazon, as it is now the twelfth most populous
city in Brazil. With just over two million inhabitants, Manaus has also become an
economic powerhouse during the 20th century with the growth of the industrial sector.
Natal
In 1597 Brazil was still a colony of Portugal but the city now known as Natal was
dominated by French buccaneers. On December 25, 1597 a group of Portuguese
officials traveled towards the Potengi River with the duty of reclaiming the captaincy
of Rio Grande do Norte. Twelve days later Portuguese officials began construction
of a fortress that would remain the most prominent landmark in the state of Rio
Grande do Norte until today: Forte dos Reis Magos (Three King’s Fort). With its
impressive beaches and sand dunes Natal has become one of the tops spots for
foreigners visiting Brazil.
Porto Alegre
Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, is located in the southernmost region
of Brazil. It shares many cultural traits of their Argentinean and Uruguayan neighbors,
differentiating them from all other state capitals in Brazil. The city itself lies on the
eastern bank of Guaiba River, right at the convergence of six rivers, which together
form the Lagoa dos Patos (Ducks Lagoon). The city is interspersed with more than
one million trees making it one of the greenest cities in Brazil despite its other rank as
the fourth-most populous metropolitan area in the country with roughly four million
inhabitants.

Host Cities
Recife
Recife, Portuguese for “reef,” is located along the coast in the north-east area of
Brazil and is the capital of the state of Pernambuco. Recife is often referred to as the
capital of the Northeast due to its economic importance. With the immigration of
the Dutch Recife was built up as its own city, with the dominance of the Dutch West
India Company. The Dutch influence over the development of Recife resulted in the
city’s infrastructural style emulating European architectural design and style, and thus
leading to Recife’s reference as “the Brazilian Venice.”
Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is one of the oldest large cities in Brazil, having been founded in 1565,
and serving as the Brazilian capital for nearly 200 years before it was replaced by
Brasilia in 1960. Despite this change of the political base of the country, the city of Rio
de Janeiro has remained as the country’s most popular tourist destination and cultural
hot spot. Rio boasts a natural beauty with a location between a tropical forest and a
series of beaches, as well as a rich cultural history with a multitude of widely celebrated
events ranging from the New Year’s Eve celebrations, to the world-famous Carnaval.
Salvador
Salvador, established in 1549, was one of the first urban areas of Brazil to be settled
and colonized by the Portuguese. With its northern coastal location Salvador became
one of the main ports for the slave trade in South America and thus created a rich
culture influenced by the Portuguese and the Africans. African culture is widespread
in and around Salvador from capoeira, a fusion of martial arts and dance brought
to Brazil by African slaves, to the rhythms of the agogôs and atabques, percussion
instruments also derived from the influence of African culture.
São Paulo
São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and serves as the financial and business hub of
the country. Located in the south-eastern region of the country, it is nicknamed Terra
da Garoa (Land of the Drizzle) due to its renowned weather instability and plentiful
rainfall. São Paulo also offer a high-profile cultural center with concerts, exhibitions,
downtown shopping, a Japanese district, and an immense food and restaurant scene
with more than 12,000 restaurants to choose from. Furthermore, the city was the very
birthplace of Brazilian football, as British descendent Charles Miller lived in São Paulo
and introduced the game to the city in 1894.

Airlines & Airfares Cartan/Top Service Tours’ package pricing for the 2014 FIFA World Cup BrazilTM does not include airfare in the published quote. However, we would be happy to book your air transportation. When calling to book your package please notify your specialist that you will be requiring air. Airfare pricing will be available approximately 11 months prior to departure. We have been given priority by the airlines to block seats for the FIFA World Cup BrazilTM, and we are confident we can get you the best possible options for your air travel. Base Camp Concept The 2014 FIFA World Cup BrazilTM will span over 12 cities throughout Brazil. Depending on the MATCH Hospitality Programs inclusive of tickets that you choose, it is likely you will have the opportunity to attend matches in multiple host cities. Because of the complexity of making arrangements to attend matches in a variety of cities, we have created the base city concept to ensure your accommodations and travel arrangements well in advance of traveling to Brazil. Cartan/Top Service Tours have arranged accommodations and travel packages in four of the World Cup host cities: Fortaleza, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, and Salvador. You have the opportunity to choose from one of the four cities as your base while staying in Brazil. This will be where your accommodations will be and the airport you will travel to, as well as allow you the opportunity to enjoy the Brazilian culture amidst the World Cup enthusiasts and excitement.
