First Lesson
Exodus 2:1–15

      Birth and Youth of Moses

Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a Levite woman. 2 The woman conceived
and bore a son; and when she saw that he was a fine baby, she hid him three months. 3 When she
could hide him no longer she got a papyrus basket for him, and plastered it with bitumen and
pitch; she put the child in it and placed it among the reeds on the bank of the river. 4 His sister
stood at a distance, to see what would happen to him.

5 The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her attendants walked beside
the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid to bring it. 6 When she opened it,
she saw the child. He was crying, and she took pity on him. “This must be one of the Hebrews’
children,” she said. 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get you a nurse
from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” 8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Yes.” So
the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and
nurse it for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed it. 10
When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and she took him as her son.
She named him Moses, “because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”

      Moses Flees to Midian

11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and saw their forced labor. He
saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his kinsfolk. 12 He looked this way and that, and seeing
no one he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 When he went out the next day, he saw
two Hebrews fighting; and he said to the one who was in the wrong, “Why do you strike your
fellow Hebrew?” 14 He answered, “Who made you a ruler and judge over us? Do you mean to kill
me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “Surely the thing is known.”
15 When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses.

But Moses fled from Pharaoh. He settled in the land of Midian, and sat down by a well.

Gospel Reading
Matthew 11:20–24
      Woes to Unrepentant Cities

20 Then he began to reproach the cities in which most of his deeds of power had been done,
because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the deeds of
power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in
sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, on the day of judgment it will be more tolerable for Tyre and
Sidon than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum,

will you be exalted to heaven?
No, you will be brought down to Hades.

For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this
day. 24 But I tell you that on the day of judgment it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom
      than for you.”

Confession and Absolution of Sin
Presider Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor:
           Most merciful God,
People we confess that we have sinned against you
           in thought, word, and deed,
           by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
           We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
           have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
           and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Presider Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ,
strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.
People Amen.

The Peace
Presider The peace of the risen Lord be always with you.
People And also with you.

Collect of Longing
Loving Father, we who are physically distant now groan inwardly as we await the day when we are restored
to the company of our neighbors and brought to the fullness of your presence in the Eucharistic feast.
Comfort us in our longing to be near each other, assure us of your indwelling presence, and hasten the
day when we will abide with you and all our beloved siblings in that kingdom where there is neither
sorrow nor crying but the fullness of joy with all your saints; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

   Invitation

         People Thanks be to God.

Southern Africa Spiritual Communion
In apartheid South Africa many prisoners were denied the sacraments and had to find other ways of taking Spiritual
Communion. This found its way into the 1989 Anglican Church of Southern Africa Prayer Book as a help to others
      who could not receive

Jesus, may all that is you flow into me. May your body and blood be my food and drink. May your passion
and death be my strength and life. Jesus, with you by my side enough has been given. May the shelter I
seek be the shadow of your cross. Let me not run from the love which you offer but hold me safe from the
forces of evil. On each of my dyings shed your light and your love. Keep calling to me until that day comes
when, with your saints, I may praise you for ever. Amen.
Closing Hymn Hymnal 535
Post Communion Prayer
   Presider Let us pray.
                Eternal God,
   People heavenly Father,
you have graciously accepted us as living members
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ,
and you have fed us with spiritual food
in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.
Send us now into the world in peace,
and grant us strength and courage
                to love and serve you
                with gladness and singleness of heart;
                through Christ our Lord. Amen.
