Shakespeare Hospice has the answer…Dragon Boat Racing!
We are currently looking for adventurous participants from all
over South Warwickshire and the North Cotswolds to take part in
our ‘Dragon Boat Racing’ charity event. Dragon boat racing
offers a great opportunity to raise funds and awareness for The
Shakespeare Hospice. It is a superb platform for team building,
and it is also lots of fun.

If you are interested, everything you need is enclosed in this pack including your team
booking form. We have tried to make everything as easy as possible for you to take part.

We support over 1,000 adults and young people across South Warwickshire and the North
Cotswolds. Our patients access one or more of our specialised services, including: Day
Hospice Hospice at Home, counselling for pre- and post-bereavement, support for families,
young people and children, Transitional care for 16-24 year olds, support for young carers,
and spiritual, emotional and complementary therapies.

The aims of our Hospice are to help anyone with a life-limiting illness within our region to
live in as fulfilled and creative a way as possible; to offer care that is family-centred and to
enable people to die at home, if that is their wish, in dignity and comfort.

What’s going on?

On Sunday 19th September 2021, The Shakespeare Hospice is calling teams from across
Warwickshire to take part in our unique charity ‘Dragon Boat Racing’ event taking place on
the River Avon alongside the recreation ground in Stratford-upon-Avon. Teams of 12-17
people will take part in exciting, fun and challenging races during the day. There will be a
commentary during many of the races, to entertain participants and audiences alike.

What is ‘Dragon Boat Racing’?

Dragon Boat Racing is the UK’s most exciting water sport!

The dragon boats are 40ft long Chinese war canoes. Up to eight pairs of paddlers and one
drummer make the team, whilst a qualified helm from Dragon Boat Events Ltd controls and
steers the boat from a standing platform. The races will run throughout the day over a short
course of around 250 metres.

Each race is timed and every team is guaranteed (weather permitting) 3 timed races during
the day, with races starting at 10am. The team’s single best time over all 3 of those races is
then used for qualification into the final round using all the available dragon boats in one
last race.

Following the final, the winning team members will be crowned The Shakespeare Hospice’s
Dragon Boat Champions!

Who can take part?

Virtually anyone can take part, but you must be 12+ years of age. Dragon boat racing is a
fully inclusive sport regardless of ability, fitness, or experience. 12-17 people per boat/team
and we suggest nominating reserves! Absolutely no previous experience is required as all
instructions will be given on the day.

How does the sponsorship system work and how do I reserve my team’s place?

Firstly, we ask for a secure booking of £250 per team and each team to raise at least
£750 in sponsorship for The Shakespeare Hospice. Alternatively, your company/team could
pay £1,000 for a team. This simple sponsorship system allows you to take part in this
unique event whilst raising significant funds for The Shakespeare Hospice. We are using
Enthuse Checkout, a service that allows you to pay your booking fee directly to us, and you
can also create your own online fundraising page via their website.

The Hospice is here to help you along the way so if you have any problems in raising your
sponsorship then do get in touch. We can discuss ideas and give you advice, and you will
also receive our handy A-Z of fundraising ideas to get you started!

Simply complete the team booking form and return it with the booking fee to us as soon as
possible, but before Friday 20th August 2021. Please make cheques payable to The
Shakespeare Hospice. This will secure your team’s place on this exciting event and in turn
you will be sent confirmation of your place, a map to the venue and full details of what will
take place on the day.
Sponsorship forms are included in the pack, you can give these out to all team members.

If you find you can’t get a full team together please contact us as we are happy to put
groups together so you can still take part in all the fun.

Finally

This is a unique opportunity to experience an exhilarating Dragon Boat Race whilst at the
same time raising valuable funds for a good cause. Beginners are more than welcome as
there will be plenty of people taking part for the very first time. You are welcome to bring
your friends and family to watch you on a fun day out you will never forget – the day you
starred in The Shakespeare Hospice’s Dragon Boat Racing Event.

Sets of bespoke designed medals will be awarded to the champions, runners-up and the
third place team!
