Upper or lower division? *
For a class to be listed as upper division it must meet *at least two* of the following four criteria
developed by the Curriculum Committee: 1) have college-level prerequisites, 2) focus on a
particular topic or require an in-depth study of a subject rather than a survey or introduction, and
require that the necessary introductory study has been completed, 3) demand a readiness and
maturity characteristic of students with successful prior college experience, with skills in reading,
writing and discussion of demonstrable rigor and complexity, and 4) include course objectives
which entail high levels of cognitive, affective or psychomotor achievement. Course proposals
which do not supply a rationale for upper division status will be classi ed as lower division. In
particular, a course will NOT be listed as Upper Division without the accompanying academic
prerequisites.) Course status can not be changed once it has been accepted by the committee as
one or the other.

Anything the January Term Committee should know about your
course
If you would like to add anything beyond the description you include in your syllabus that you think
will help the January Term committee understand your course, please do so here.

Your answer

How is this course unique from the typical (departmental) Saint
Mary’s curriculum? *
If you teach a similar class during the normal semester, please specify how this course is unique.
Remember that January Term courses are non-departmental by policy and practice, and
departmental courses, or courses that substantially replicate or resemble regular semester course,
will not be approved.

Your answer

Prerequisites *
GaelXpress can only read speci c department and course numbers, such as ENG 5 and SEM 001; it
can not read general prerequisites, such as "any psychology course or science course." The Jan
Term suggests adding "Or by Permission of Instructor" to allow for exibility. Please remember,
however, that if your course is lower division and primarily aimed at rst and second year students,
prerequisites may make it di cult for them to add your course. A prerequisite of Seminar 1, for
example, will exclude all rst years, English 5 will exclude most, and English 4 will still exclude
many. Prerequisites are generally more appropriate for upper division courses, or when a course
requires very speci c prior learning.

Draft Syllabus upload
Please upload a draft syllabus that includes a title, course description, reading list, learning
outcomes, basis for nal grade (i.e. percentages or point break down for assignments), short
assignment descriptions that link them to learning outcomes, and tentative schedule for the our
weeks of January Term (including readings, topics, assignments, eld trips, and any other pertinent
information for your particular course). We also appreciate seeing your typical boilerplate syllabus
language so we know what you communicate to your students.

ADD FILE
Please provide a break down of your course contact (2625) and
non-contact (5250) minutes. *
In other words, how will you use the total amount of required time you have for this course? We
want to see how you plan to use your time, not micromanage you. Please make sure your use of
time is consistent with the January Term Classroom Contact Hours Policy, which states: The
January Term Program maintains that the following types of class activity are acceptable uses of
classroom contact minutes: docent-led tours, guest speaker sessions, programs/events held
outside your regularly scheduled class meeting times, nature hikes – anything that is relevant to
your students’ learning and that requires their attention and activity. Film labs are not considered
contact minutes. Full-length lm screenings must be scheduled outside of regular class meeting
times.

Your answer

January Term Learning Outcomes
January Term has three program learning outcomes. If you haven't done so in the learning
outcomes section of your syllabus, please describe here how your course addresses these learning
outcomes. In January Term, Students will: 1) Learn to take whatever captivates their imagination
and turn it into a subject of academic inquiry capable of being probed and examined analytically; 2)
Be able to concentrate their full and sustained attention on one subject, developing ability to master
topics quickly through focused intensity; 3) Develop competencies in applied learning, moving
beyond what they know (previous learning) to what they can do with what they know (transfer) in
innovative ways and novel situations.

Your answer
