  Harvest Thanksgiving Service
Welcome to Greyfriars, Tolbooth and Highland Kirk
You are warmly invited to remain behind for coffee and sandwiches, served at
the back of the church beneath the organ at the end of the service.
Hymns, and other numbered items, can be found in the purple hymnbooks
located in the seats in front of you. We invite you to join in saying and singing
the parts of the service printed in italics, and to say Amen after the prayers.

Collect for the day:
Almighty God, we offer you hearty thanks for your goodness and care in giving to us the
fruits of the earth in their seasons. Give us grace to use them rightly, to your glory, for
the relief of those in need, and our own well-being; through Jesus Christ, the living
Bread, who came down from heaven and gives life to the world, and who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.                            Amen

INTRODUCTION AND WELCOME TO MARTIN RITCHIE
Promise of Candidate:
     I, Martin Ritchie, commit myself to this congregation; to serve
     willingly, to learn humbly, and to minister faithfully during this time
     of formation.

       Promise of Supervisor:
       I, Richard Frazer, commit myself to this candidate; to reflect
       attentively, to support rigorously, to challenge graciously, and to
       give of my time and my experience generously in walking this road
       together.

       Promise of Congregation:
       We the people of Greyfriars commit ourselves to be supportive in
       this time of learning, serving, growing for us all.

       Covenant Prayer:
       Loving Lord, unite us in worship, strengthen us in service and bless us in our
       commitment to one another. When we rejoice, laugh with us. When we struggle,
       weep with us. May we always speak the truth in love, offering support and wise
       nurturing. Guide us over the coming months that we may encourage Martin
       and one another, seek the good of the church, and the glory of your kingdom.

Please join us when you can for 20 minutes of quiet prayer and reflection.

The next Nitekirk, offering ways to explore our spiritual experience through music,
reflection, silence, creativity and conversation, will take place in St Columba’s by
the Castle in Johnston Terrace this Friday, 18 October, from 8 pm to 11 pm.
Visitors may come and go at any time.

Forthcoming Services
The service of Holy Communion on 27 October at 11.00 am will be a joint service
with our local ecumenical partner churches, and will take place in Augustine
United Church on George IV Bridge.

The October issue of Life and Work is now available for collection. The Kirk’s
order for next year’s copies has to be placed by 11 November this year. Our regular
subscribers should please confirm to the Kirk office by then that they wish to
continue, and make payment. New subscribers are welcome – the annual
subscription is £19.44, or £32.64 by post. Cheques should be made payable to
‘Greyfriars Tolbooth & Highland Kirk’.

Gift Aid Your Open Collection Donation
If you are a UK tax payer, please use Gift Aid to let Greyfriars Kirk claim 25p from
HM Revenue & Customs for every £1 you donate, by putting your open collection
donation in the Gift Aid envelopes provided - these can be found in the backs of
the chairs, or ask one of the duty elders.
