Important Announcement
      for September 2022
St. Angela’s College have signed a Memorandum
of Understanding with plans to be incorporated
into IT Sligo as they progress towards becoming a
Technological University (TU) in early 2022. This
potentially means that students joining St. Angela’s
College in September 2022 will be starting a degree
that is accredited by the TU. The quality and high
standard of learning for students will remain the same
as will the course content and structures. Updates on
the incorporation with IT Sligo will be posted to the
College website www.stangelas.nuigalway.ie and to
our social media platforms as
they emerge.

St. Angela’s College, Sligo, is a fast growing, dynamic third
level institution providing a high quality of education and
research in the North West. Students are provided with
University-level education, modern campus facilities, small

The Campus is ideally located on the scenic shores of Lough
Gill only a few minutes from Sligo town. Easy access and good

COURSE OVERVIEW
The B. Applied Science in Nutrition, Food and Business Management is designed to meet the requirements
of the food industry nationally and internationally by providing multi-skilled graduates with the ability to
help organisations compete in an increasingly competitive global marketplace. Over 4 years, the B. Applied
Science in Nutrition, Food and Business Management course seeks to develop competencies in the areas of
nutrition, culinary skills, food safety, food quality, new food product development, marketing, management
and entrepreneurial thinking. Ultimately, the course seeks to create graduates with the capacity for developing
food products to meet the nutritional needs of the health-conscious consumers with dietary restrictions, the
elderly and the young.

WORK PLACEMENT
Year Three of the course incorporates the possibility of a structured 20-week placement nationally or
internationally in a variety of food industries and food-related organisations. Students have undertaken
work placements in organisations including Ornua (formerly the Irish Dairy Board), Kerry Group, Glanbia,
Lakeland Dairies and Boyne Valley to name just a few. It is possible to study abroad and secure placement
within the EU as part of the Erasmus programme.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of the B. Applied Science will have attained the knowledge and skills that will enable them to obtain
employment in a variety of food and associated industries. Graduates will be equipped with the technical
knowledge and skills required to work in a diverse range of careers such as: food production, new product
development, quality control, marketing/ sales, supervision and management, consultancy and research.

FURTHER STUDY
St. Angela’s College, Sligo and NUI Galway also afford the opportunity to pursue further studies at
postgraduate, master’s and PhD levels.

WORK PLACEMENT
In year three of the course students will have the option to either study abroad for five months with one of our
partner Universities or to complete a five-month work placement in Ireland. It is possible to study abroad and secure
placement within the EU as part of the Erasmus course. We are currently working on opening up partnerships with
potential Transatlantic Colleges for possible study abroad placements.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
There are opportunities for graduates to be employed by national or international governmental or non-governmental
agencies focusing on family and child wellbeing; consumer advocacy; and health promotion. Graduates will have
capacity to work with both private and State organisations as food advisors, or community Home Economists. There
is also potential to take a commercial pathway and enter into the private business sector in the areas of food; textiles
and fashion and interior entrepreneurship.

FURTHER STUDY
Postgraduate programmes (Masters and Doctoral level) can also be pursued in the areas of Education*; Home
Economics; Health Promotion; Food and Nutrition; Health Coaching and Wellbeing; Child Development; Youth and
Family Studies; Textiles and Fashion.

TEACHING COUNCIL ACCREDITATION
Upon graduation, students will meet all the Teaching Council requirements to be registered as a Newly Qualified Teacher
(NQT) of Home Economics and Irish.

WORK PLACEMENT
School placement and microteaching are integral components of the programme. Students complete teaching practice in
each stage of the programme in a variety of schools and educational settings. Approximately 24 weeks of school placement
will take place over the 4 years.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of this programme are qualified to teach both Home Economics and Irish to Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate
at second level. Graduates are provided with a professional and academic qualification that enables them to also pursue
careers in a wide range of fields including Education, Home Economics and Irish.

    Minimum Grade H5 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects at O6/H7 level in the Leaving Certificate, including
    Irish, English, Mathematics, a laboratory science subject (i.e., Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Physics with Chemistry (joint) or
    Agricultural Science), and any two other subjects recognised for entry purposes.

COURSE OVERVIEW
The Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) – General is a four-year degree offered at St. Angela’s College in conjunction with Sligo
University Hospital and the HSE-NW. On successful completion of the course students will be able to present for registration with
the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) and practice as a Registered General Nurse (R.G.N.). The overall aim of the
course is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to become competent analytical and reflective nurses.

in partnership with statutory and voluntary service providers who support persons with an intellectual disability living in a variety
of settings across the region. On successful completion of the programme, students will be able to present for registration with the
Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland’ and practice as a Registered Nurse Intellectual Disability (R.N.I.D.). The overall aim of the
course is to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to become competent, analytical and reflective nurses.
