Our Philosophy of Anishinabek Education
We believe that learning is a lifelong journey. Defining and implementing our
educational purpose at KTEI plays a significant role in Bmaadziwin for our students,
community and Nation: for KTEI, this means that we continuously strive to nurture
confident, resilient learners who are culturally grounded in personal identity and
who are active participants engaged in their own learning with high aspirations in
becoming a good citizen of Mother Earth…living a good life.

We also believe strongly that Anishinabek cultural inclusiveness must exist
throughout a student’s educational experience with us. At KTEI, learning
must occur in an environment where our organizational values are fostered
and demonstrated amongst and within our lifelong learning community. Our
organizational values are very important to us, and it our goal to ensure teachers,
faculty members, staff and our Traditional Knowledge Holders are student
centred and have only the best interests of student success at heart.

We believe emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and social development is critical to
the educational and learning experience for each and every student that chooses
to learn at KTEI…this balanced learning philosophy will nurture students – and
will help make KTEI students realize their limitless potential!

process is the formal evaluation and credit-granting process
whereby students may obtain credits for prior learning.
Students may have their knowledge and skills evaluated

Kenjgewin Teg hosts a private Secondary School to meet the needs of
First Nation and Non-First Nation students who cannot or choose not to
attend local provincial secondary school(s). Using a lower teacher-student
ratio, an on-going intake and a more individualized, career-oriented
approach, students gain the skills and confidence to complete an Ontario
Secondary School Diploma at Kenjgewin Teg, or reintegrate into the
conventional secondary school public system. Our focus is to provide a
caring, flexible and student-centred atmosphere in which our students
can find success.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship
Program - OYAP
To support and enhance experiential learning for youth, KTEI
plans on expanding its networks and partnerships to help
support career choices in skilled trades and apprenticeships
for youth on Manitoulin Island. The Ontario Youth
Apprenticeship Program/apprenticeship pathway is a valued
and accessible option for all secondary students.

OYAP is a youth apprenticeship program aimed
at providing grade 11 and grade 12 students with
opportunities to train as apprentices in a number of
skilled occupations while completing studies toward an
Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Most important, OYAP strives to introduce senior high
school students to skilled trades in an effort to increase
youth apprenticeship opportunities.

OYAP partners with employers who are committed to
offering apprenticeship opportunities to students who
demonstrate an aptitude and interest in skilled occupations
through work experience placements.

OYAP meets the objectives of secondary school reform by
providing secondary school students with a school to work
transition program.

If you’re in high school – either Grade 11 or 12 – you can
earn co-op education credits through work placements in a
skilled trade, such as:
ĀĀ automotive service technician
ĀĀ hairstylist
ĀĀ general carpenter
ĀĀ other skilled trades
Co-op education credits are actual secondary school credits.
It’s just that you earn them through a work placement.

How to qualify
To qualify for the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program,
you must:
ĀĀ be at least 16 years old
ĀĀ be studying full-time in high school
ĀĀ either enrolled in Grade 11 or 12 or equivalent
ĀĀ have earned at least 16 credits

How to apply
Contact your high school guidance counsellor or co-op
education teacher or ask us at KTEI to help find out if OYAP
is right for you.
