                                  ˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜
After a difficult and never before experienced year it is hoped that 2021 will be the
year that we return to what we call normal…but maybe it will be a new normal ?
There have been local families who have lost a dear mother, father, brother, sister, other
relative or friend and because of restrictions with social distancing have not had the
benefit of “celebrating” the life of their loved one with many others….
To those we send our heartfelt condolences.
We are a strong nation with a history of battling through many hardships
over the years and 2021 will prove to be another example of our resilience.

Stay Strong. Stay Healthy. Stay Safe.

I now have someone who will print off ‘A FEW’ copies of the magazine. These will be available to those who have no access to
email and do not have family or friends nearby to print a copy off for them. If you know someone who fits the category and they
are willing to provide stamped addressed envelopes (C5 size) can you let me know (Tricia 01538 304560)

Can you help the Peak District National Park Authority to set policy for the future of the National Park?
Climate change. Nature recovery. Sustainable communities. Low carbon transport.
These are just a few of the big ticket challenges the National Park is facing. The planning process is vital in addressing such
issues and works best when local authorities, local communities and developers work together creating effective partnerships to
achieve positive outcomes.
Planning matters, this is why when we produce plans and policies, we ask everyone to take part in the consultation.
We are currently reviewing the Peak District National Park Local Plan. It is a plan for the future development of the local area
which we write and implement in close consultation with you.
We use the planning policies we develop in the Local Plan to make decisions on the hundreds of planning applications we
receive each year. To make the right decisions we need your help to decide what goes into the Local Plan, and that will guide
development in the National Park over the next 20 years.
Please complete the survey at https://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/planning/policies-and-guides/the-local-plan and find out more
about the Local Plan review process, including timescales, background information and how to get involved.
Survey results will be published online. These will influence the next stage in the formal consultation, ‘Issues and Options’ .

Job Titles Explained....
A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost.
He reduced altitude and spotted a man below.
He descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me?.....
I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."
The man below replied, "You are in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground.
You are between 53 and 54 degrees north latitude and between 1 and 2 degrees west longitude."
"You must be an Engineer," said the balloonist.
"I am," replied the man, "How did you know?"
"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is, technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your
information, and the fact is I am still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help so far."
The man below responded, "You must be in Management."
"I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?"
"Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You have risen to where you are due to a
large quantity of hot air. You made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you
to solve your problems. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow,
it's my fault."

It was New Year’s Eve and raining hard and a big puddle had formed in front of a local pub.
An old man stood beside the puddle holding a stick with a string on the end and jiggled it up and down in the water.
A curious gentleman asked what he was doing.
'Fishing,' replied the old man.
'Poor old fool' thought the gentleman, so he invited the old man to have a drink in the pub.
Feeling he should start some conversation while they were sipping their whisky, the gentleman asked, “And how many
have you caught?'
‘You're the eighth’. ......

THOR’S CAVE
                                                          Near Wetton
                                                     In the Manifold Valley

Thor's Cave is a small but prominent cave, not only because of its name. It is located above Manifold Valley and
has a beautiful view into the valley. It dominates the central section of the Manifold Valley. Its entrance is a huge
symmetric arch, 7.5m wide and 10m high, visible from the Manifold way below as a huge arch in the middle of a
limestone cliff face.
Once inside the cave you can see that there is a second entrance to the side of the cliff, which has
                    almost the same size.
The cave is a natural cavern formed from the dissolution of the soluble limestone that makes up the
White Peak. The cave is a popular attraction and was served by a station on the Leek Manifold Light
Railway between 1904 and 1934. The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery’s Local History collection
includes postcards of the cave from 1910 to 1920.

The name of the cave is somewhat of an enigma. Although it evokes links with the Norse god Thor or his Anglo-
Saxon equivalent, Thunor, there is no evidence to support this etymology. Nevertheless, the cave was in use in
Anglo-Saxon times with Early Medieval artefacts uncovered there. The origin of the name possibly lies in the word
‘tor’ from the Old Welsh word for a high rock or tower (ultimately from the Latin turris).
Other ideas link the cave to local folklore and tales of sprites and fairies. The ‘Fiddling Hobthurse of Thor’s Cave’ is
said to be ‘more than a harmless sprite’ whose fiddling or screeching filled the cavern.
The site was excavated in 1864-65 and then again by GH Wilson between 1927 and 1935.
Finds of a wide range of dates were uncovered from the Palaeolithic to the Anglo-Saxon period.
This also included the burials of at least six individuals.
During the Upper Palaeolithic (38,000-11,500 years ago), Britain was linked to mainland Europe by the area now
known as Doggerland. Britain was populated intermittently due to periods of glaciation and warming and bands of
hunter-gatherers usually left only ephemeral traces in the archaeological record. The main exceptions are the flint
tools and polished stone axes such as those found at Thor’s Cave.

In more recent times, the cave has provided inspiration for pop culture.
It was used by The Verve as the location for their single ‘Blue’ in 1993
and serves as the cover art for their first album ‘A Storm in Heaven’.
It was also used as a location in the Ken Russell 1988 film, ‘The Lair of
the White Worm’, staring Hugh Grant. The cave serves as the fictional
Stonerich Cavern, in which local legend the d’Ampton worm is said to
                           have been slain.

Thor’s Cave is apparently haunted by a solitary figure who stands at its entrance – it is supposed to be the
ghost of a Roman soldier. Locals also tell of supposed a suppose haunting of someone who committed
suicide by throwing themselves down into the gorge below
Samuel Carrington from Wetton excavated the cave in the 1860’s. His finds included flint artefacts, a stone
adze and bronze brooches. The most interesting of the finds was a Neolithic/Bronze Age skeleton buried in
an upright position in the clay of the caves floor along with several other skeletal remains making it one of
the oldest inhabited sites in the peak district. There were also remains of a now extinct species of bear that
was found and some of these items are now on display in the Buxton Museum.

Alstonefield Carol Singing: We maintained this longstanding tradition with a socially-distanced evening around the
Christmas Tree on the Village Green. Thanks to everybody who sang and donated, we raised £76.44 for Crisis at Christmas
which enabled two homeless people to receive support through the Christmas period.

We had 83 adults and 9 children order food. We provided a take-away/delivery three course meal and festive delights to 35
families. We made a gross income of £1,611 from tickets, raffle, auction and donations; our total expenditure on food,
containers, hall hire etc. was £469.82. We have therefore sent a wonderful £1,141.18 to Cancer Research UK.

On Sunday 20th December at 3.30pm, Rev Arthur Hack officiated at our Christmas Holy Communion service. Sadly, due to

                                                        Recipe Book?
Is it time for the 3rd Edition of the Butterton Recipe
book? We had one about 11-12 years ago and apparently
35 years ago too. Both expertly curated by Tricia
Tomlinson. Yvonne Pope is considering a new edition, if
there are volunteers to work on it with her. For example,
anyone who has expertise in putting together a publication,
is good at photography or just good at reminding folk to
                                 submit their recipes!
The last edition has lots of lovely recipes (Doris Wentworth's
coconut cake which never fails, even if you don't soak the
coconut). Some of the recipes are from people who are no
longer with us. If families wish to include them again, I think
that would be nice. And also include new or updated
                                 recipes too.

Please Contact Yvonne (01538 304137 or yvopope@googlemail.com) if you are interested either in helping
or the general concept. Then we can provide an update in the next newsletter.

The last meeting on 1st December had to be cancelled due to being in Lockdown. The next meeting is due to take place on
Tuesday 12th January, 7pm at the Village Hall (Covid rules permitting).
It has been frustratingly difficult to explain to SMDC where we need the grit piles in the Parish. Having stopped to chat with
the workmen, I asked them had they had left some grit at the bottom of the Causeway. None had been left as, he explained
waving his iPad at me, ‘I can only leave grit where it says on my job sheet.’
I urge anyone with any worries about highway problems to go to the SMDC website and Reportitonline. The more reports
made, maybe the better the chance to get some of the jobs done?
The ‘Road Sweeper’ did a grand job throughout the village just before Christmas. Thanks to our Lengthsman Steve Billings
for organising that.
The Christmas Tree on Church corner was sponsored by the Parish Council. Thanks go to Hilary and Les Bassett for all their
efforts.

The Hall continues to look unloved inside. A little bit of paint flaking from the walls. No bookings, no Christmas Fayre…….
At least we qualified recently for a second SMDC grant to help us out.
The situation with the Swings Project is that we are ready to move and sign on the dotted line for two new sets of metal
swings- one a set of two flat seats and one set of two baby seats. Fundraising in the Community has reached approximately
£750 and we look forward to a discussion asap with the Parish Council who have offered some financial assistance. Also, two
new picnic tables will replace the old ones but these will not be put in place until Spring.
An update on the Shed Project - the shed will be delivered and erected on 23rd Feb. We can then move our larger equipment
from the main hall to create some space in the storage room/’Doctor’s Surgery’ (as some still call it.)

Christmas was a very quiet affair in Elkstones with no village Christmas lunch, carol singing or the
usual socialising and just a very small handful of people attending the Christmas service at St
John’s. Steve Collier rang the church bell at 6pm on Christmas Eve to join other members of our
community and the country to ‘Ring the Bells for Christmas’. A lovely sound across the valley,
                           thanks Steve.
Liz Meakin was very busy selling raffle tickets for church funds. A much harder job this year as
she had to drive round the lanes collecting money and delivering prizes. A grand total of £155 was raised. Thanks to all wh o
supported the cause and to Liz for all her hard work.
Keep an eye on our village website, elkstones.org, for church services and any news of future events when some sort of
normality returns.
Wishing everyone a very happy, healthy and hopeful new year.

I hope that everyone has managed to celebrate and enjoy Christmas, albeit in a reduced and more simple way, but this
echoes the simplicity of our Saviour being born in a humble stable. I hope that the New Year brings us hope and happiness,
amidst the current darkness and we have learned to cherish the things that mean the most to us - love for our fellow man,
faith and hope.
We held our Christmas Carol Service, which was reduced in number, but not in spirit. Despite the restrictions, we enjoyed
some of our favourite carols sung amazingly by Tim Robinson – we are very fortunate and thank him for this special addition.
We thank the Warslow Silver Band for playing around the village on Sunday 20 th December – it was extremely moving to hear
the familiar carols through the air – a joyous moment of Christmas Spirit and normality.
We welcome new members to our village at Stacey Close, The Old Post Office and Hope Terrace View – we look forward to
a time when we can all get to know each other at a normal social event and wish you much happiness in your new homes.
Thank you to Margaret Massey for her kind Christmas Donation to the Church.
If anyone wants to talk to somebody in confidence or just for a chat, because they are lonely or anxious, please contact a
member of the church team. We all need each other, never more than now in these uncertain and challenging times.
I pray that through patience and obedience, we work together to get through this crippling situation and we learn that it is the
basic things that are important and necessary in life – love and compassion for our fellow man. God bless all of you.

DEADLINE FOR THE FEBRUARY EDITION IS
                     6am on WEDNESDAY 27th JANUARY
Input from you all would be gratefully received. At the end of the day, if you don’t contribute then there is no
magazine. Talking of which a lot of you believe that you cannot send items until the deadline time and date.
A deadline has to be set but you can send your information/pictures/jokes anytime and it really helps me to put
things together the earlier you send your items to me .
So please feel free to submit any article. It’s your magazine and just so long as it is Legal, Decent and
Appropriate in my eyes, it will be inserted of course . All entries are currently free of charge.
Please remember I can only accept word documents.
Call me on 01538 304560 if you need any help.
Don’t be late, the old rule still applies. Absolutely nothing will be accepted after 6am on that date.
