What have you being doing the last 10 months??
Message COO Maurie Schokman: On behalf of our students and parents we wish all our Cararoo spon-
sors & friends a Happy and Safe Christmas and New Year. Lots of joy and happiness in 2021.
In this special edition of the Newsletter I will try and give a short update on all the wonderful things we
have been able to achieve during the Covid-19 Pandamic, the last 10 months. We have worked hard to
keep our project running & let the students know they are loved and we are here for them.
I must also say a very special thank you to all our supporters who have helped with funding the Foun-
dation during these extraordinary times. And a big thank you to our Manager Ian who has been running
the operation in Manila on her own. Our chairperson Cynthia has been in lockdowned in Italy since
March.
If you require more information on any of the updates please do not hesitate to email or call me. Hap-
py New Year from Cararoo Board & Maurie Schokman
Our year started with the students and families getting ready to support our favour-
ite Singapore based rugby club the Singapore Cricket Club GROWLERS at the annual
Manila 10 competition to be held in Manila in March 2020. the Growlers wanted to
make this a BIG event for the Cararoo students and helped with funding NEW SPE-
CIAL tee-shirts, travel insurance, transport, meals etc.
Unfortunately with Covid the Manila 10’s was cancelled. We held onto the tee-
shirts and included these with the presents we gave the students and parents at Christmas. Thank you
SCC Growlers for supporting our Foundation over the last 12 months with donations over P200K. These
funds raised from private donations, cake sales and special raffles in Singapore. WE THANK YOU.

April 2020—with time on his hands during the lockdown in Singapore good friend and long time sup-
porter of the Foundation Paul Hackett decided to run a GOGETFUNDING project to shave his head. 70
people from around the world supported Paul, helping him raise P177K for the Foundation. These
funds were used to help with Covid Hamper feeding program as well as funding set up of village IT Cen-
tre. THANK YOU Paul.
In March we decided that we needed to support our students and families by setting up a
Hamper feeding program. Our manager Ian was not allowed to enter the village and our
squatter canteen was shutdown by the authorities. We relied on our mothers group to pur-
chase food, pack the supplies and distribute to Cararoo families. We documented stories of
this program on a regular basis on Facebook and ask that you take a moment to look at Face-
book. This program would not have been possible without the help of our Corporate and pri-
vate individuals who helped with funding. Remember the Hamper Feeding program ran from
March to end November. Given the current state of the pandemic we may need to re-start the
Hamper Feeding program in 2021. —THANK YOU.PAGE 4: Special Edition Newsletter December 2020 Edition 23.
In 2019 we decided to inplement a full dental program for all the students, we have done this twice be-
fore in the past 10 year. The idea was to have the project completed by the end of 2019, but funding and
finding a dentist with easy access proved to be a problem. We engaged the services of good friend Past
President Dr Joji Tan from Rotary Club Makati Dasmarinas to act as technical support on this project. Joji
is the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of Dental Gems Group, a well-established dental practice of 8 ex-
perts working from a network of clinics in Makati and Alabang. Joji has been a Dentist for 35 years and
an Orthodontic Specialist for 32 years. Joji is President & CEO of Smile Pilipinas Development Founda-
tion, Inc., an NGO working to help address the dire state of oral public health.
The budget for completing a full dental program includes cleaning, xrays, fillings & extractions is going to
be around P500K. We have secured funding via private donations including a GRANT of P140K from Ro-
tary District 9685 Australia. Given the pandemic and social distancing, & travel restrictions we managed
to start the Dental Program in September with cleaning and check-up for all the students. The next
phase of fillings and extractiuons will happen over the next 6 months. Thank you the late Mrs Letitia
Schokman for your major donation towards this project.PAGE 5: Special Edition Newsletter December 2020 Edition 23.
Re-Establish some
normality in Village
Apart from the pandemic / lockdown & social distancing (and lets
not forget rain and major typhoons in November) the parents &
students tried to bring back some normality by establishing a wi-
fi system and establishing a couple of laptops that would allow the students to get involved with on-
line school education. We also received permission to re-open the canteen and start providing meals
for the students (keeping social distancing). We also re-started the vitamin program. Again a big
thanks to Paul Hackett & Jacob Zobel Memorial Lodge 202 for your help and support in providing find-
ing for the IT centre.. THANK YOU
