The Lord Is Near

Dear friends,

It has been a long while since I wrote to you in the
Parish Magazine; and I now take this opportunity to
share a word or two for this Christmas about
which there have been questions whether it would
be cancelled or not on account of the coronavirus.

The “cancellation” bit is subject to be read into.
What we know is that each Christmas is very
special because it reminds us about what we often
easily forget. So, what does Christmas remind us
about? That “the Lord is near”.

Before our Saviour was born, God said that once
his Son was born, he would be given the name
Immanuel; and when the angel of the Lord spoke to
Joseph the husband of Mary who was to become
the mother of our Saviour, he said that the child to
be born to Mary would be given the name Jesus.

Matthew 1.23 concludes that the promise of the
coming of “Immanuel” would be fulfilled in the child
who would be named “Jesus” to be born to Mary.

Matthew 1.23 goes further by telling us the meaning
of the name “Immanuel” by saying, ‘“The virgin will
be with child and will give birth to a son, and they
will call him Immanuel”–which means, "God with
us.”’

Immanuel, the God who is with us is near in several
ways each successive Christmas.

First, the God who is with us is also near us in that he
back to God the Father, but because his coming is
is close to each one of us every day.
near; and one day soon the wait will be over.
Secondly, he is near us in that Jesus became just like (Philippians 4.5b)
one of us–he became human. He understands us,
Whatever the situation is this Christmas, I wish each

                                                               fulfilling New Year in

and near.
                                                               Peace and joy is my
Thirdly, the Lord is near because while we celebrate
                                                               prayer for you.
the birth of Jesus–his First Coming into our world on
Christmas day, we are also reminded about the Lord’s
near return in that Jesus our Saviour will come back
from heaven to earth.

As we celebrate the birth of our Saviour this year, let
us do so with joy, not only because he came and went

In November, the Society was delighted to
welcome Dan Oakley, a lead ranger and Dark Sky

gave a fascinating talk about the sky at night.

In 2016, Dan led an initiative to make South
Downs National Park an International Dark Skies
reserve, joining an exclusive list of only 15 others
globally. Using fabulous photographs of our skies
at night he reminded us of how lucky we are to
live so close to such a wonderful natural
resource. He also encouraged us to think about
the contribution that we can each make to keep
our skies as dark as possible so that their
wonders can be seen and appreciated. He
recommended that any outside light should be no
greater than 1,000 lumens and to use warm white
bulbs rather than bright white ones and to ensure
that lights are dipped down in the same way as a

Success in Hampshire Open
Studios for Wickham Artist,
         Brian Eyley

It was Brian's first time participating in the August
Hampshire Open Studios. Given that Covid-19 Brian's contact details:
precautions meant that his workshop could not be 07547-241974
opened to visitors, visitors inspected his work in a artistryinwood@gmx.com
conservatory with all the doors and windows open - https://www.facebook.com/BrianEyleysArt
draughty but safe! https://briansartistryinwood.square.site/

There were a good number of visitors and sales and
he has since been following up a number of
commissions received during the week and since. The
pictures here show just a few of his recent works.

His Rockin' Trees are again proving to be very
popular - they have rounded bottoms so if you put
them on a table, they move when the table is touched
looking like a forest in a breeze. Due to a
commission, he has started making larger versions
intended for floor standing display. These are around
knee height but are limited in numbers because it's
quite difficult to get the high quality wood that is
needed. He has a number of trees available for
purchase for Christmas presents but is in the mood
to do more if needed.

He has also been experimenting with turning wood
on the lathe much thinner than normal. Obviously,
that is quite a challenge, but the result is a wooden
piece of art that has some translucence.

He will be taking part in an outdoor craft fair in
Hedge End on Friday 4 December when his Rockin'
Trees and other art will be on show. People can also
contact him using the details right.

The
Square
Cow
During these dark days of
lockdown, when isolation,
solitude and cash flow, which
has brought an additional
downside to many people’s
woes, come a ray of sunshine.
Frank Dixie, local resident and
owner of the Square Cow, in
Wickham square, is providing
local residents with a weekly
helping of a delicious serving of hot soup, Fridays, 12-2pm.
Businessman Frank has transformed the one time Wine Bar (one of the oldest buildings in the village)
into a thriving village inn, providing good food, entertainment and a warm welcome.
During lockdown, with Square Cow shuttered, he decided to serve free nourishing fare of soup and
savouries to any resident of the parish.
We should remember that poverty, cash-flow and ‘in the red’, doesn’t always imply poor money
handling skills, ask anyone who is self employed, in retail, hospitality, tourism, beauty industry and many
other professions. A late pay cheque won't delay mortgage/rent payments or be acceptable at the
check-out or filling station. Even the most careful cash management households can fall into arrears
through no fault of their own. Though there’s no use telling that to hungry youngsters.

 Keeping well this winter
As the colder weather starts to set in, there are lots of things you can do to keep
 healthy and well this winter.

Keeping your body healthy in winter
As people age their immune system becomes weaker and we can lose muscle mass and so
here are some tips to help boost our immune systems and stay healthy
Ø Keep Active – try to move around once an hour, even if it’s only for a short walk to and from
the kitchen to put the kettle on
Ø Eat well and regularly – make sure you have plenty of food at home or have arranged meal
      deliveries
Ø Keep hydrated – there is still the risk of dehydration even in the colder months
Ø Get your free flu jab
Ø Keep warm – layering is the best way to keep warm and set your heating timer to ensure
your home is warm when it is coldest

Keeping your mind healthy and your spirits up in winter
Winter can be a difficult time but there are lots of ways to keep our minds active and our
 spirits up
Ø Keep to a routine – Routine is a great way to give us some certainty in uncertain times and
helps us plan for the week ahead
Ø Keep connected – Keep up the connection with family and friends. Arrange regular visits (if
possible due to Covid-19 restrictions) or arrange regular phone and video calls. Age Concern
Hampshire can also help to put you in touch with a befriender.
Ø Stay active – exercise is well known to give our mental health a boost and so a small amount
of exercise is good for our bodies and our minds. This may be a short walk around the garden
      or even some armchair exercises.
Ø Get Help – if you are finding things particularly tough, are feeling lonely or isolated or need
help, reach out to family, friends, or your GP for support.
Ø Do something you enjoy – find time for hobbies you enjoy or perhaps try a new hobby.
Ø There are lots of resources available to keep our minds active, from crosswords, quizzes and
games to online exhibitions and events. Try something new!

   Cooking safely
Fires from cooking appliances have consistently resulted in around half of all accidental
fires in the home in England, so having smoke alarms fitted, and an escape route
planned, in case of fire, is very important.

   Precautions

   • Make sure saucepan handles don’t stick out, to prevent them being knocked off of the hob
   • Take care if you’re wearing loose clothing – this can easily catch fire
   • Keep tea towels and cloths away from the cooker and hob
   • Double-check the cooker is off when you’ve finished cooking
   • Take care if you need to leave the kitchen whilst cooking, take pans off the heat or turn them
       down

   Take care with electrics
   • Keep electrics (leads and appliances) away from water
   • Check toasters are clean and crumb trays are regularly emptied and placed away from curtains
      and kitchen rolls
   • Keep the oven, hob and grill clean and in good working order - a build-up of fat and grease can
      ignite a fire

   Cooking with oil
   • Take care when cooking with hot oil – it sets alight easily
   • Make sure food is dry before putting it in hot oil so it doesn’t splash
   • If the oil starts to smoke, it’s too hot – turn off the heat and leave it to cool

   Safety aids

There are products available to help improve the safety of cooking in the home, such as:

   • Hob guard – prevent handles sticking out and saucepans being pulled or knocked off the hob
   • Oven shelf guard – prevent accidental burns when taking food out of the oven

There are also lots of products available which are designed to help you carry out kitchen tasks –
such as chopping, lifting a kettle, and grating – if you have limited mobility and dexterity. See the
NHS website for more information: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/social-care-and-support-
