World War I: a select list
The following sources have been selected to indicate what is available on
participants in WWI and the contexts in which they may be found and so
shed light on their war experiences, of great interest to the family historian.
Defence department and cemetery records, photographs and diaries,
accounts of battalion experiences and specific battles are covered in the
                  bibliography.
In searching the State Library of Queensland’s catalogue, http://onesearch.slq.qld.gov.au,
use search terms such as ‘First World War’, ‘World War, 1914-1918’, ‘Australia’ or ‘Great
Britain’ in combination with phrases such as ‘regimental histories’, ‘battalion’ and ‘history’ or
‘biography’ or ‘campaigns’.

Defence and government records
National Archives of Australia
http://www.naa.gov.au/
This site has useful entry points into WWI information. Select ‘Fact Sheets’ on the home
page. Under the heading, ‘Defence, Armed Services and War’ select ‘Defence service
records for WWI and WWII’. Clear information is provided on a range of war service
records: what they contain and how to get them. Advice on other sources is also outlined.
‘WWI internee, alien and POW records’ may also be helpful. Highlights for WWI are:

• WWI service records; under ‘Search the collection’, use the RecordSearch facility, click
on ‘Name Search’ tab, type in surname and select ‘World War I’ from ‘Category of
Records’ drop down menu for an easy search. You can download a digital copy of the
    records.
• Mapping our Anzacs, http://mappingouranzacs.naa.gov.au/, which will allow you to click
on a map and find the names of those who served according to where they were born.
This links to identifying information for those who served and their service records. It also
provides detail enabling a more useful search through the Australian War Memorial’s
    biographical and collections databases.
• Discovering Anzacs, http://discoveringanzacs.naa.gov.au/, currently being developed
with New Zealand Archives that will have a unique profile of every Anzac who enlisted in
    World War I.

Australian War Memorial

Biographical databases

Search for a Person is a useful entry point to search these databases as it provides a list of only
the relevant areas in response to the questions about surname, the conflict and whether or not the
soldier was killed.

Information for WWI covers:
AIF Nominal Roll including enlistment details and date of return or when killed
Unit Embarkation Nominal Rolls which document the first unit with which a soldier served. The
rolls are incomplete but provide information on next of kin.
Roll of Honour which provides a lot of information on those who died including place and date of
death and burial, information on next of kin and other detail extracted from the Roll of Honour cards
which may be attached as a scanned image.
Commemorative Roll which records the names of those Australians who died during or as a result of
wars in which Australians served, but who were not serving in the Australian Armed Forces.

Honours and Awards gazetted and recommended with scanned images sometimes attached
Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau Files which may include those
about whom there is little other information.

  Collections database

The collections search feature is an entry point to a range of pictorial and audiovisual materials,
private records, books, maps and sheet music as well as Australian Army war diaries. The war
diaries, a means by which formations and units recorded their daily activities, are presented as
scanned images.
A section provides guidance for those using the records and researching family history.
There is also a large collection of Defence Department records held on microfiche at the State

strategies and causes of the war which typified other nation’ war histories. Features of his writing
include very detailed narratives of battles and small biographies of 6 500 soldiers. He is credited
with developing the ANZAC legend and was a major force behind the Australian War Memorial.
He brought back one of the landing craft from the Gallipoli campaign, commissioned art works and
collected battlefield artefacts from 1916. The history, which he thought might take five years,
actually took twenty-three.

Newspapers
The State Library holds an extensive collection of Queensland newspapers as well as major
interstate and overseas papers. The list may be searched by place or title using handbooks held at
the Desk in the Micrographics reading room on Level 3.
These can be an excellent way of finding information about individuals in a particular area. Local
heroes were celebrated and their photographs were displayed in the paper.
The Queenslander, a weekly newspaper, included pages of individual, small portraits of soldiers as
they embarked for overseas. Photographs of a contingent at the time of leaving and a feature
article were also often included. These individual portraits have been indexed in a card catalogue
held in the Heritage reading room on Level 4, plus a typed list is available at the Desk in the
Micrographics Reading Room on Level 3. The Queenslander is on open access in the
Micrographics Reading Room on Level 3.
