Welcome to Buckinghamshire New University!
We are looking forward to you joining our BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) with NMC Registration course in
September.
At BNU we pride ourselves on the support we offer our students to succeed in their academic learning and on
creating graduates ready for employment. This pack has been created by the BNU Welcome Team and your course
leader, Geeta Lamichhane, to provide you with information that you will need for a successful start at BNU.
Please read it carefully before you join us.
Your Welcome Week will run from Monday 20th September to Friday 24th September 2021 and we are
currently putting together your detailed timetable of activities. We are aiming to have this with you by the start of
September, but in the meantime as further plans are put into place regarding how you will join BNU and your
Welcome activity we will add details to the Welcome area of our website. Please check the site regularly to ensure
you have the most up-to-date information available.
ABOUT YOUR COURSE
We are looking forward to welcoming you in September. Your induction will be at our Uxbridge Campus and you
will be provided more information about the details of the induction programme in a later date. The academic
Semester runs from September to February, and you will be starting your clinical practice placement in various
clinical settings in February 2022. All the teaching activities will take place at our Uxbridge campus for Uxbridge
group and at our Aylesbury campus for Aylesbury group.
THEORY TEACHING
Teaching during the academic semesters takes the form of lectures in cohorts, seminars in tutor groups and clinical
skills sessions in the Simulation Laboratories.
The BSc (Hons) Nursing programme is full-time and students will attend campus two days a week for specific
seminars and skills sessions, with additional timetabled sessions on other days for assessments and mandatory
sessions. On days which are not scheduled for attendance, students are expected to study independently for seminar
activities. First Year students will regularly attend on Mondays and Fridays, with additional sessions on Wednesdays
and Thursdays.
Core content material will be delivered via Blackboard, which is the University’s virtual learning environment (VLE),
in the form of short presentations, articles, video or other multimedia. The advantage of this form of delivery is that
it can be accessed at any time you choose. Material will be available on Blackboard at the start of each module, giving
you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with it in advance of the event.
PRE-COURSE READING LIST
The University has a comprehensive library at Uxbridge, stocking a wide range of books that are relevant to nursing
studies. Wider reading on health-related topics and specialist nursing is held at the library at the main campus at
High Wycombe. Books can be ordered on-line from either library once you are enrolled onto the course.
1In advance of your course, you will find it useful to read The Nursing Times and Nursing Standard for an overview of
current issues being debated in nursing. Details of your pre course reading list can be found towards the end of this
document and you are not required to purchase any books prior to joining the course, however visiting your local
library and reading the listed books will give you an introduction to the core modules of the course.
Details of your pre-joining project can also be found at the end of this pack.
PLACEMENT LOCALITY CHOICES
A major element of your learning and assessment will be in the clinical environment area and will be based on the
experience of caring for individuals and on your actual performance and professional behaviour. Whilst in your
clinical areas you will be given many diverse opportunities to achieve your learning outcomes. In order to assist the
Placements Team in allocating you to one of the seven Localities for your placements, you must identify your
preferences on the Placement Locality Preference Form. Further information regarding your locality choices can be
found towards the end of this document.
We will get back to you with some more information and how to complete the locality preference forms later,
however please note the following:
• Due to capacity constraints it may not be possible to give you your first preference.
• You may be required to undertake practice at any of the hospital sites in your Locality at some time during
your course.
• You may be required to undertake practice in our community, private, voluntary and independent sector
placements in the Central & North West London and Thames Valley areas.
• Children’s Field students may be required to move across localities due to the need to ensure breadth of
experience which may not be fully available within the locality chosen/allocated.
UNIFORMS
The University will be providing you with your student nurse uniform, which you will wear throughout the course
when in our skills labs, doing simulations or on clinical placements. There will be more information available for you
regarding the uniform collection during your induction week.

Student Finance England for your loan in good time.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH
You need to complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire and a medical consent form prior to starting of the
programme. More information about this will be posted to you in due course.
COVID-19 VACCINE
The Health Education England (HEE) have highlighted that it’s important you have the COVID-19 vaccination to
help to protect yourself and patients.
The COVID-19 vaccination is being offered to everyone aged 18 or over at local sites run by GPs or community
pharmacies, at larger vaccination centres and in some hospitals.
If you’re registered with a GP you can book your appointment at a larger vaccination centre, a community
pharmacy run site or at some GP run sites through the National Booking Service website or by phoning 119.
3While registration with a GP is encouraged to access the vaccine, individuals can request to book COVID-19
vaccination appointments as an unregistered patient through a local GP practice. GP practices should support
unregistered patients and those without an NHS number to access the vaccine; they can record these
vaccinations and be paid for them.
If you are an International Student studying in the UK you can also receive a Covid-19 vaccination.
If you haven’t already booked your vaccination you can go online on the national booking service to book. You
can also find answers to a number of frequently asked questions here.
DISCLOSURE & BARRING SERVICE DISCLOSURE (DBS)
You will need to complete the DBS application online, at the beginning of the programme. There will be more
information posted to you later.
YOUR TIMETABLE
Your timetable for your first week with us will be provided to you closer to your start date. Your timetable for
your first semester will also be available online nearer the time.
ACCOMMODATION
Once you have been given a conditional or unconditional offer and you have accepted BNU as your first choice,
application information will be sent out automatically, via email to the email address you gave UCAS. For 2021-22
entry, we plan to be in contact in June onwards to all students that have made BNU their Firm choice. We will
continue to contact new applicants regularly after this point.
The application process is completed online, and we’ll stay in touch by email as your application progresses.
BURSARIES
At BNU we offer an impressive package of scholarships and bursaries to make sure that all our students can reach
their potential. Please visit our Bursaries and Scholarships page to find out more about additional financial support
that you may be entitled to.
INCLUSION, DIVERSITY AND DISABILITY TEAM
Did you know that the government offers Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs) to help meet the extra costs of
studying that some students face as a direct result of a disability?
Our Team are here to help ensure that you get the most from your experience at university in an inclusive learning
environment. We support students with a range of disabilities, including Dyslexia and other specific learning
difficulties, mental health conditions, Autism Spectrum Disorder, physical disabilities, sensory disabilities such as
visual or hearing impairments, and long-term medical conditions.
4We can assist qualifying students in making a claim for Disabled Students’ Allowance and we also offer support and
advice on disclosing your disability to your course team to help ensure that reasonable adjustments are in place.
Your first step in accessing the support we can offer is to register with us. Please contact us via
disability.service@bucks.ac.uk to introduce yourself and make arrangements for a registration appointment.
For more information on DSA or to start your claim, visit: https://www.gov.uk/disabled-students-allowance-dsa/how-
to-claim.
YOUR STUDENTS’ UNION
When you enrol at BNU you will automatically become a member of Bucks Students’ Union, one of the top SU’s in
the country, and you will have the opportunity to enrich your student experience by taking part in a diverse and
exciting range of social, recreational and developmental activities. You don’t need to join and there are no fees
involved, with membership giving you access to sports, events and entertainment, societies, skills training and
workshops alongside recreational activities and much, much more. All of these services and activities are free to join
through the Big Deal. Whatever your passion or interest, the union has a lot to offer, no matter how you study - full
time, part time, distance learning, post-grad or through an apprenticeship. Find out more with the online
Membership Guide.
As well as all this, the Students’ Union has an Advice Centre offering professional, independent and confidential
advice and guidance on all aspects of student life, including (but not limited to) finance, accommodation, personal

questions please get in touch with Geeta Lamichhane via geeta.lamichhane@bucks.ac.uk.
We look forward to welcoming you soon!

5PRE-JOINING PROJECT
Your pre-joining project is to enjoy the Summer and get yourself prepared for starting University in September. This
may sound easy, but I’d like you to start thinking about some of the practical things you need to consider (like how
you will get to and from your placements).
I’d also like you to think about how you are going to balance your time between studying, enjoying university and
everything else life sends your way! This is a busy course, with a large amount of time on campus doing practical work.
There will also be work that you need to complete in your own time, as well as reading that you need to complete
before and after your taught sessions.
Part-time work is very possible providing that placement and academic work remains your priority as you need to be
able to work the full 24hr cycle of care within midwifery placements. It’s good to start looking early for flexible
employers who will understand that your availability may be reduced when on placement. The Students’ Union website
is a good place to start for job vacancies in the area.
Start looking into Uxbridge and Aylesbury itself, what it has to offer, what you can do in the town centre and across
Buckinghamshire. Also have a look at which societies or clubs you might like to join, or see if the things that you
already like to do when you get some down time to relax are available in the area – because that will be very important
once your studies get underway. Use these links to go straight to each page on the SU website:
