“Friendly staff, welcoming environment

Riswan is a support worker at a school for children with
learning disabilities, and is himself profoundly deaf. Riswan
loves his job and would like to become further qualified,
but needs English GCSE; a subject that is particularly
challenging for him as he cannot hear grammar and
vocabulary well.
After having CAL recommended to him, Riswan paid
a visit to Health Campus where he was impressed by
“friendly staff, welcoming environment and individual
support”.
“
Riswan took a GCSE prep course first, then enrolled for
online GCSE English in the evening to fit around his work,
before moving to a smaller afternoon class at his tutor’s
suggestion. Riswan then began to fly with his learning,

qualification. He says his tutor created for him, a “fantastic
learning experience”.

Newly retired Katherine already had lots of interests, but
a CAL brochure she saw in Halifax library re-ignited a
passion for languages. Katherine had previously worked
partly as an interpreter and had also learnt some Italian

Katherine’s enrolled on the Beginner Italian course at

Advanced Italian class. Katherine loves her class and the
experience created by her “amazing’ tutor”, who insists
Italian is spoken throughout and includes lively discussions
of Italian culture and restaurant reviews. Everyone feels
comfortable to express ideas in Italian and the class has
led to strong friendships and even a summer school trip
Katherine organised, to Bologna.

It’s amazing what can be achieved through online learning. Anne was looking for a new interest to take her mind off
lockdown and spotted Cake Decorating in the CAL prospectus. Not a complete beginner to cake decorating, Anne was
particularly intrigued by the professional techniques on offer but had never done any online learning before.
Borrowing her husband’s laptop, Anne managed to teach herself the basics, including using the mute button when
rummaging in her cutlery drawer during a class! Anne says, “it’s much easier to watch the tutor’s demonstrations on
screen and record”, as she could then watch and practise in her own time.
“
Anne really enjoyed the course and helped others by sharing costing information for setting
up small enterprises. In just six weeks she had learned fondant modelling, brush embroidery
and padded cushion effects, with her tutor inspiring her to research further techniques. Her
greatest success so far is a Paddington Bear cake she made for her grandson’s birthday Really good for
