With water and energy being at the centre of the economic crisis, not only in South Africa, but the African continent
at large, the conference received a lot of momentum from industries and government, and had a fair share of media
coverage. Our own Dr Hildegarde Fast from the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism
was also in attendance at the conference where she talked about the Energy Security Game Changer and shared
views about energy in the Western Cape. The Airports Company of South Africa also won an Energy/Water Efficiency
Project of the Year award for the George Airport Solar Plant at the African Utility Week 2016 Industry Awards. The
City of Cape Town received praise from delegates for its resource efficiency consciousness. Tilden Hellyer of Frost &
Sullivan was speaking to the media when he highlighted the Bay Side Mall in Table view as a positive case of waste,
energy and water crisis intervention. We congratulate the organisers of the event, sponsors and other stakeholders on
its success and all the award winners and nominees from all over the African continent.

Creating value by reducing carbon emissions in Africa
Sustainable Heating is a South African based company providing comprehensive, expert services to meet our clients’ heating, steaming and incinerating needs. We use renewable
energy sources – such as biomass boilers fuelled by woodchip or organic waste – to produce steam, hot water and hot air.
these 5 plants are saving 1.008.108 Tons of CO2 and that would be the carbon absorbed
by 767.702 mature trees during 15 consecutive years.
Our venture does not only save carbon, it also creates employment and skills. In two
years, we have created 35 direct qualified jobs for which we have trained local workers.
And this does not include jobs created in the supply chain or on our construction
sites. Our suppliers in South Africa come from various wood related industries: pallet
recycling, alien vegetation eradication programmes, sawmills, furniture makers. What
we use as combustible is wood that has no use for other industries. Therefore, we add
value to our suppliers too.
Sustainable Heating has a fast growth business model. We offer high standard services
at an impressive speed of execution. Our last installation took 8 weeks between casted
floors and boilers commissioning.
We are already developing our concept in other African countries. We have to seeing
our target of 150 boilers installed by 2020. This would mean more than 1000 jobs

In March 2016 it was announced that the National Energy Regulator of South Africa had approved
ESKOM’s application to increase tariffs following a series of public consultations nation wide.
The Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town are trying to ensure efficiency in
the province and Cape Town. The Energy Security game changer is one effort of the provincial
government to ensure that electricity remains accessible and affordable to all. The City of
Cape Town is facilitating other means in which it buys renewable energy to supplement its grid
