WELCOME
Welcome to the 19 th Imagine Arts Festival, and to our new online programme,
in which we hope there is something for everyone to enjoy. 2020 has presented
challenges to us all, and this year’s festival, for the first time, includes both live
and online events, an exciting departure which promises to enhance Waterford’s
tradition as a centre for the arts by making events available to a wider audience than
usual. Our programme includes music, literature, dance, visual art, performance
and history, as well as incorporating the John Dwyer Trad Weekend and Waterford
Writers Weekend.
Imagine would like to say ‘thank you’ to all of our artists, volunteers and audience,
and also to the sponsors and advertisers who have contributed in so many ways
over the past 19 years. We would also like to say a special ‘thank you’ to Waterford
Council, the Arts Council and our venue and media partners for their continued
support, especially in these uncertain times.

Flood, by Ger Bourke is a look into the lives of Stella and Jack, a married couple
in their fifties adrift in a small boat in modern day Ireland. The rising water
has knocked out all lines of communication. Power lines. Electricity. Television
masts. Phone masts. Covered all stop signs. As they desperately bail water
from their now sinking boat the interaction becomes frantic. Can anything be
salvaged from a marriage that is literally and metaphorically; ‘on the rocks’,
before it is too late.
Written by Ger Bourke, directed by Jim Nolan, starring Lynda Gough and Joe
Meagher.
Lighting design by Richard Lippy Collins.
A co-production of Bag-a-Cats and Rigout Productions.
Supported by Waterford City and County Council, Art Links and Imagine Arts Festival.

Chosen as one of RTÉ's Rising Irish Stars of 2018, and as one of The Irish Times'
contenders ready to break through in 2019, Junior Brother has built a rabid
following thanks to unmissable live shows, and music both excitingly forward-
looking and anciently evocative. His strange stories unfold with reckless abandon
upon an idiosyncratic guitar and foot tambourine accompaniment, influenced
as much by the avant-garde as music from the middle ages and his home place
in rural Ireland.

Trá Pháidín are a collective improvisation and
experimentation. Their debut one track album Set a hAon

JOIN ME IN THE PINES
Join Me in the Pines is the Wednesday 21 October
solo moniker for Kildare’s
David Geraghty, also known Theatre Royal | 8pm
to audiences as a founding €18 Booking through www.theatreroyal.ie
member of Bell X1. or 051 874402
As a member of Bell X1, David
has released seven studio albums to date. In addition to this, Geraghty released
two solo albums under his own name. In 2014, David decided to delineate
his solo work by giving it a new name, and so Join Me in the Pines was born.
Inherit was JMITP’s first album release in 2014, followed by Monomania last
year. Monomania brims with David’s distinctive vocal and song-writing style but
this time he has ventured into an edgy 80s synth-pop world with hints of funk,
conjuring shades of Prince, Bowie, Gary Numan and Grace Jones. The album
was mixed by the masterful Ross Dowling (James Vincent McMorrow, Talos,
Brian Deady) and was released on Decal Records.
Lockdown, although devastating to the live music scene, has provided an
opportunity for the writing and recording of a new JMITP album. Some of this
new music will be released in the coming weeks.
                                                                               7

MUSIC OF WATERFORD
MUSIC OF THE 17th AND 18th CENTURIES FROM IRELAND,
ENGLAND, FRANCE AND SPAIN
Tonos: Róisín O’Grady - Soprano
Eamon Sweeney - Baroque Guitar, Bandora and Lute
Special Guest: Cárthach Mac Craith - Sean Nós Singer
The Port City of Waterford in the 1600s was a thriving place, busy with trade
from all corners of Europe. The coming of Oliver Cromwell and the Siege of
Waterford in 1649 was to change the face of the city and Ireland’s culture
forever. While ‘to Hell or to Connaught’ were the options presented to poorer
Irish, merchants of means fled Waterford to far-off lands including France and
Spain. Meanwhile Irish culture, language and traditions were sent underground,
to live on in the more remote corners of the country. This concert presents
music that was heard both in Ireland and abroad during this turbulent period.
Tonos and Cárthach perform a beautiful selection of European and Irish music
from the 17th and 18th centuries - mixing Irish song with works by English and
Continental masters and highlighting common threads and distinct differences.
This concert provides a unique opportunity to hear the sean nós singing tradition
alongside that of the classical style, both telling stories through song in different
ways. Composers performed will include Purcell, Handel,Lully, Aranes, Marín,
O’Carolan, Mac Domhnaill
and Ó Riain.

The role of drawing is fundamental to my work. These drawings of crows and
animals are sometimes prefaces to paintings, and sometimes a relaxation from
them. They are works in their own right.
They are witnesses to the changes in the landscape of Teeromoyle in South
West Kerry – my mother’s place.
My mother died quite young but I was reared on her stories about her childhood
in the mountains, so family and a sense of place haunts my work. My mother’s
past is my past. Her parent’s house is long gone but the field where the house
was remains unchanged and I have painted this field many times.
Painting the field sometimes makes me feel snug, warm and sheltered and other
times exposed, vulnerable and turbulent. I remove layers of earth while adding
layers of paint
This is my subject matter, not the meaning of my paintings.

do not simply disappear all in
one go as if by magic but are relegated to obsolescence, haunting us like the
living dead as they insist upon the integration of the past into the here and now.
Time and place are blurred through Ciara’s charcoal drawings of structures and
objects within non -descriptive vistas and through Polaroid narratives which
often depict dreamlike excursions. Elevating these often-defunct structures to
a higher level of appreciation, the artist refers to them as Monuments.

I’m a self taught artist originally from Manchester but now living permanently
in Waterford. I enjoy painting treescapes, the leafy or naked canopies of giant
trees, which take the eye to the dizzy heights of the sky above, and insects that
give on a larger scale a glimpse into the tiny world that constantly buzzes and
works around us.

THE GALWAY INCIDENT
A WORK IN PROGRESS BY CLARE SCOTT
 Sunday 25 October
 Free Online Event | 2pm
 See www.imagineartsfestival.com

The artwork in progress is a fitting metaphor for
the current global situation. It is an exploration,
a process, a searching for solutions. The now is
chaos, the ending undefined. Failure is an ever-
present possibility…
The Galway Incident is a short film (5 minutes)
that tells the story of happenings during a night-out in Galway city. As the
narrative becomes increasingly fragmented, both visually and aurally, the viewer
has to work harder and harder to follow the story. The film was intended to be
projected onto an installation accompanied by events and workshops exploring
the experiences of the hard of hearing. However, interrupted by current events,
the artist has chosen to present the work as is.
In addition to the online premiere of this short film, Scott will also be presenting
research connected to this project in the form of 3 short pieces in the form
of filmed interactions, re-enactions, online talks or workshops. Or something.
Probably. But then…who knows?
Clare Scott is a multi-undisciplinary artist and writer based in the South East of
Ireland. This is an Artlinks supported project.

“I” is a curated selection of works by emerging
artists; Kitsch Doom, Ciara O’Neill, Matt Higgs,
William Murray. Each artist is exploring themes of
gender, sexuality, and identity within Irish culture.
The artist works in a range of diverse mediums
such as photography, print, drawing, sculpture,
and performance, and this collective exhibition
aims to reflect samples of their work as individuals,
who’s grouping together is providing a collective
space for reflection, inquiry and immersion. Using
architectural interventions, the intent is that of creating a space that is soft,
accessible, and intimate.
Keen to examine the reach of the gallery output into societal discourse, Sandra
Kelly has curated an exhibition that will create conversation and stimulate
debate. The works presented are accompanied by a programme of discussion,
screening and workshop style events as a means of carrying the themes of the
exhibition into a well structured and safe forum.
Some visitors to “I” may want to exercise parental discretion, and some may
view the work as “sensitive in nature”.

makes an idea come to life.

A musical setting for 10
classic haiku, composed by
Eric Sweeney, haiku selected
and read by Mark Roper.
Eric Sweeney passed away
in July this year. A composer
of national and international importance, he had been deeply involved in the
musical and artistic life of Waterford for most of his life. His death is a huge loss
to the world of music in Ireland.
oh, this hectic world is the last piece Eric composed, a setting for 10 classic
Japanese haiku selected by the poet Mark Roper, who had collaborated with Eric
on many ventures over many years.
The piece was due to be performed by Eric and Mark at Imagine Arts Festival
this year. Composer and pianist Marian Ingoldsby, a close friend and colleague
of Eric’s at WIT for over 25 years, has very kindly agreed to step in to play Eric’s
music.
Imagine is proud and honoured to present oh, this hectic world, a tribute to the
memory of a man who will be so greatly missed in so many different ways.

A rural community commit their lives
to memory as a new motorway ploughs
onwards through their landscape, a glaring
symbol of our modern age. What will
                                     remain when nature inevitably subsumes
                                     it all?
Keith Walsh was born in Waterford in the
south east of Ireland. His first exposure to
cameras was at 13 when he began filming
with his older brother. He studied Film
and Television in Galway City and began
                                     working professionally while in college.
Over the past 25 years he has worked
specifically in non – fiction – directing, shooting and editing his own work
with long time collaborator Jill Beardsworth. Their work has screened at
over 50 festivals worldwide and picked up several awards, most recently best
cinematography for When All is Ruin Once Again at the Galway Film Fleadh.
