International shipping accounts for 2-3%. of global GHG emissions – a number that will
only increase in line with expected growth in global trade if no actions are taken.
Shipping is a hard-to-abate sector and the solution involves the entire maritime value
chain from fuel production via ports to the ships. Therefore, it requires international
collaboration amongst states, companies and non-state actors as well as across the
value chain to reach the international climate goals set in the Paris Agreement and in the
International Maritime Organisation’s initial GHG strategy.
The overall challenge is to make different parts of the value chain across sectors
commit, cooperate and deliver at the same time to prove that emission-free shipping
has the potential to be a practicable and viable choice. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure
the right framework for innovation across the entire value chain to support the
development of new energy systems and technologies for decarbonising shipping.
Furthermore, international collaboration across the maritime value chain is key to
ensure the development of zero-emission shipping, and zero-emission shipping is a
must-win battle in our collective effort to overcome climate change.
On 22 April 2021, leading maritime players are invited to pinpoint their views as
Singapore and Denmark seek to unfold potentials for increased international
public-private collaboration towards emission-free shipping. The event is presented by
SGInnovate, the Royal Danish Embassy in Singapore, and the Danish Maritime
Authority.Day 5

International shipping moves more than 80% of global trade,
helping drive socio-economic development the world over.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO), its Member
States, civil society and the shipping industry have been
working together to establish and maintain a global
framework of regulations and recommendations to ensure
that shipping continues to provide a safe, clean, dependable
and efficient form of transportation.
International shipping is also on the cusp of change, driven by
new tools made available by digitalisation and the growing
imperative to decarbonise. Work is already underway at IMO
on these areas. The IMO-Singapore Future of Shipping
Conference seeks views from key players on building a
coordinated global approach and on tapping new
opportunities for safer, cleaner and more efficient shipping.Charting A Course For Decarbonising Maritime Transport Date : 23 April 2021 Time : 7pm - 8.30pm Format : Virtual Organiser : World Bank Contact : Ms Jennifer Brown (jbrown12@worldbank.org) Target Audience : IMO policymakers, ship owners/ship operators/charterers, ship financiers, bunker fuel suppliers, development professionals, civil society representatives working on the blue economic, maritime transport and climate change academics Website : The World Bank Group Event Type : Open To Public Maritime transport has come under increased pressure to lower, and ultimately eliminate, its contributions to global greenhouse gas emissions. To inform shipping’s energy transition and support the sector’s climate action, the World Bank has developed two technical reports, titled “The Potential of Zero-Carbon Bunker Fuels in Developing Countries” and “The Role of LNG in the Transition Toward Low-and Zero-Carbon Shipping.” The launch of these reports will be accompanied by a “Summary for Policymakers and Industry,” discussing the key findings from a development perspective. This launch event will also highlight current country ambitions and industry initiatives aimed at building up a zero-carbon bunker fuel supply chain based on green hydrogen.

Discover wonders of the sea at the Sea Show Exhibition
Did you know that the sea covers over 2/3 of the Earth’s surface, and that more than 80%
of world’s trade are transported by sea? The Sea Show exhibition explores the magic of
the sea through thought-provoking and eye-catching artworks created by 30 artists and
illustrators from 13 countries. The artworks celebrate the wonders of travellers and
explorers, ships and cargoes, while recognising some of the threats to ocean life at the
same time.
Highlights:
• Discover larger-than-life colourful artworks, animations and installations about
life above and below the sea
• Take part in a ‘Where’s Wally’ inspired game to learn more about maritime careers
• Get to know famous sea explorers such as Christopher Columbus and Zheng He
and ‘interact’ with them via augmented reality face filters
• Visit the Shark Café installation, a playful recreation of the ‘White Shark Café’
located in a remote part of the Pacific Ocean where Great White sharks migrate
in winter
• Find clues and answers to puzzles and quizzes hidden within the exhibitionMaritime and Port Authority of Singapore
