1. Introduction
‘We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen
and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world.’ - David Warlick
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Warlick

‘The real power of interactive technologies is that they let us learn in ways that aren’t otherwise possible
or practical.’ - David Lassner https://www.hawaii.edu/leadership/david-lassner

After extensive discussions with our staff Exford Primary School implemented a leased iPad Program several
years ago and are committed to this program continuing in the future. Over the past year, since we implemented
Seesaw across the school, the staff and students alike have wished for greater iPad access for the students.

The iPad Program has enabled students to have more control, resulting in personalised and differentiated
learning. They have been able to display their thinking and outcomes in a variety of ways that best suits their
learning styles.

Exford Primary School has invested in a range of classroom technology over the years – iPads, MacBooks, Apple
TV set ups in each classroom and a large drop down screen in the Gallery.

With the introduction of the new Information, Communication and Technology curriculum expectations and the
Department of Education’s new IT planning tools and Google suite of apps, as well as our commitment to using
Seesaw as a way to make our children’s learning visible, we have come to a point where the Department funding
and our own fundraising efforts no longer meet the basic needs of the school.

We have had extensive discussions at School Council and have surveyed our community in 2017 and in 2018 and
we have made the exciting decision to include optional Managed Bring Your Own iPad program to complement
our existing provision of iPads through our fundraising efforts.

This booklet outlines the necessary information families may require for students to participate in this optional
MBYOD.

2. Exford PS eLearning Vision
At Exford PS, we aim to develop lifelong learners who are innovative and confident users of ICT in an ever
changing digital world. Through up to date learning technologies, our students and staff will have anytime,
anywhere access to the most current knowledge and information.

Our school integrates the use of ICT to promote greater student engagement and the development of more
autonomous learners. Our school will continue to build advanced teacher practice and develop the capabilities
of students and staff in digital technologies. We create learning opportunities for our students and staff to
share and collaboratively construct knowledge within our school, local and the global community.

We use ICT to differentiate student learning across all curriculum domains. At Exford, student learning is
extended through authentic ICT contexts that require inquiry, collaboration, creativity, communication and
problem solving. We use ICT to communicate and provide timely feedback to all of our students, staff and our
school community.

We will continue to promote the responsible use of digital technologies and support our students, staff and
school community to understand the behaviours and processes that will help them to act in a safe manner, when
using digital technologies.

3. Bring Your Own iPad
In 2019 and beyond, families of students are able to choose to provide an iPad for use at school (this is optional).
The iPad will allow students to access the internet, educational apps, electronic books and a wealth of online
tools and resources. It will support a range of learning activities where students collaborate, create knowledge,
problem solve and think critically. Students will be able to produce a variety of presentations and other
multimedia products. The iPad’s portability, long battery life, ease-of-use and access to an ever growing bank
of educational apps, make it an ideal device to support teaching and learning.

Students at Exford will continue to be provided with shared access to the school iPads. Each class has up to 10
iPads to use as part of their classroom learning and reflecting on their achievements.

4. iPads for Learning: Why the iPad?
Information Technology is the single, most rapidly changing and growing industry in the world. It is for this
reason that we have decided to choose the iPad, as we believe this device goes hand in hand to support mobile
learning and increase students’ flexibility and exposure to ICT. This will better prepare them for job
opportunities in the 21st Century. At DPS we will assist students to develop these skills, to be able to cope in a
rapidly changing world. We believe that giving students immediate access to technology in a 1:1 program will
help engage them in the learning process in new and creative ways. This is an exciting opportunity for our
students who will become increasingly skilled at using technology to access and present information, to problem
solve and to work collaboratively.

5. What type of device is needed? (Please read carefully)

Required: iPad Wi-Fi 32GB or higher

The student’s iPad will need to be running the latest version of iOS (software) and be at least 32GB capacity for
school use. The school will not support devices that are 16GB.

Please see the following iPad options on the next page that will be supported at Exford Primary School in 2019
 and beyond.

*** We will update all device options as newer model iPads become available.

Please note: Some iPad models do not offer a 32GB option. We encourage families to plan, budget and save as
higher GB models can be more expensive.

6. SIM Cards
We recommend that you do not purchase an iPad with cellular capabilities (SIM card), as it can be difficult to
monitor students’ online behaviours if they switch off the Wi-Fi and onto the SIM. We request that you remove
the SIM card if you already own a SIM enabled device and you wish to use it for school.

7. Protective Case

You will need a suitable case for your iPad. We would prefer that you purchase
a folio type case as these provide good protection and double as a stand.
Exford PS recommends the STM Dux Case. This case can be purchased with
your iPad purchase or separately through the Beyond the Box Portal.

You can also purchase iPad cases from most retail outlets including: Big W, Target, JB Hi-Fi; or they can be
ordered from the Apple Store or on eBay. Students are expected to keep the iPad in the case at all times.

8. Headphones / Earphones

Students are encouraged to bring along their own head/ear phones each day to assist their learning.

9. Supplying/Purchasing an iPad

We have chosen to go with the ‘Managed Bring Your Own Device’ program where
the iPads are purchased through an educational supplier and are delivered pre-
enrolled in the management program ‘JAMF’ – there is an annual $11 cost attached
 to this.

You can purchase the iPad of your choice, through our supplier
Beyond the Box via a Parent Portal (please see details on page 8).
 Recommended
Purchases will need to be made in full and the device will be delivered to the
option for school for pick up. This service will be available on an ongoing basis and can be
Managed Bring accessed through the link -
 Your Own https://www.beyondthebox.com.au/portal/education

The iPad MUST be in a rugged case to ensure iPad safety.

Please ensure that the iPad meets our school specifications (refer to page 5).

10. Parent Portal

‘Beyond the Box’ in Moonee Ponds, is a Department preferred supplier of Apple Products for Exford PS.

The Exford PS Parent Portal is OPEN and iPads/equipment can be purchased on an ongoing basis!

If you wish to purchase through our Parent Portal, please visit:

You will be able to choose from various styles and memory sized iPads and their associated Case and
Headphones. You can purchase items separately if needed.

Insurance is also available and AppleCare+ protection, if you choose to add this to your purchase. Again, we
encourage families to add their child’s device to their Home Contents insurance.

11. Insurance, Expert Service and Support

As the iPad belongs to you it will be the family’s responsibility to insure the iPad in case of loss or damage. We
recommend AppleCare+. AppleCare+ for iPad ($129.00) provides up to two years of expert telephone technical
support and additional hardware coverage from Apple, including up to two incidents of accidental damage
coverage, each subject to a A$65.00 service fee. This cover does not include loss or theft. More information
can be accessed at: http://www.apple.com/au/support/products/ipad.html

Another option is to include the iPad in your home and contents insurance.

12. Technical Support
All warranty issues are to be addressed through individual suppliers, i.e. Apple, Beyond the Box etc. Parents
are also encouraged to purchase AppleCare+. We also recommend seeking support from the Apple Store
(Highpoint) as they provide excellent service and will take the time to walk you through the steps to solve any
issues.

The Department school employed technicians will not be able to repair iPads.

13. School Documentation
Further information relating to the 2019 iPad Program will be sent home at the beginning of Term 4, 2016.
Policies and further documentation relating to Exford PS’s - Bring Your Own iPad Program will be sent home at
the beginning of each school year.
