Academic Information
The information taught aligns with the Utah State Office of Education’s Core Curriculum
for 6th grade. Please refer to their website for additional
information: http://www.schools.utah.gov/main/ (Links to an external site.)

Reading – In addition to the use 0f McGraw-Hill “Wonders”, the sixth grade will read
novels throughout the year and participate in reading groups and monthly book
reports. Daily Reading assignments will be sent home for comprehension and fluency
practice. Students will be given a Language Arts Assessment from the Wonders
website at the end of each week.

Writing– Writing assignments will be given often. Many of these will be completed on
Utah Compose. Class time will be given to complete these assignments, but it is the
students respo
Math –The sixth grade core is based on pre-algebra and geometry concepts. We will
be using the District adopted Eureka Math from the non-profit Great Minds. Daily “Exit
Tickets” will be given to check for understanding in addition to Mid Module and End of
Module Assessments. Homework will be sent home daily. Every effort will be made to
make math enjoyable and understandable.

Social Studies –The material covered in sixth grade is our world, it’s past and
present. Students will have opportunities to work independently and in cooperation with
classmates. They will read and discuss most material in class. A country report will be
assigned in the spring.

Science–We will be using 3 dimensional practices to study the new Utah Science with
Engineering Education (SEEd) Standards for 6TH grade. We will be learning the
disciplinary core ideas of Life Science, Earth & Space Science, and Physical Science.
There will be a major science project due for the Uintah Grade Science Fair
(January). The top ten science projects will be invited to attend the District Science
Fair at the end of February.

Music- Is taught by in-district instructors that come to Uintah on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. Students must practice and be prepared with their instruments if they have
them.

P.E.- Will be taught by the Uintah P.E. teacher once a week for a 45 minute time period.

Library- Students will go to the Library once a week for 45 minutes to check in and out
books. They will also be taught Library and media skills and will participate in a Library
Research project.

Grading – Grades are based on test scores, quizzes and in-class assignments. These
along with other large projects will be graded more heavily than the daily in class
work. Missing work represents a zero and cannot be made up without an excused
absence. All checked work will be returned home every Monday in the Parent Folder.
Progress Reports will be sent home mid-term and Report Cards are sent home
at the end of all three terms. In an effort to help your child become responsible and
prepared for Middle School, please make sure that your child understands that they are
responsible for their work and their grades.
Grades will be updated weekly and can be checked on the Power School Parent
Website. Parents are encouraged to do this often, so that there are no surprises.

Classroom information
School Wide Rules – Our three main rules are: Be Safe, Be Responsible, and Show
Respect. Rules for each area of the school are posted throughout the school. All other
policies are posted by the Salt Lake City School District.

Class rules – 1- Follow the directions the first time given. 2- Keep the noise level
appropriate for the task. 3- Keep your hands, feet and objects to yourself. 4- Do not
interfere with teaching or learning 5- Be prepared.

Behavior Policy – Approximately twice a month, the sixth grade will celebrate
academic responsibility and good behavior with a grade level reward/activity. All
students who have followed school-wide and class rules, and who are current on
classwork and homework may participate. Any students who have signed the behavior
log 3 times and have received a Behavior Slips during the time frame between parties
will not be able to attend the activity and will go to study hall.
If your child receives a Behavior Slip, you will be asked to review it with them, sign it,
and return it to school the next day with the student.

Electronics and Other Personal Items- Phones, electronic devices (such as iPads,
tablets, iPods, etc.), and other personal items from home will not be allowed in the
classroom and must be stored in lockers. Students are encouraged to leave these
devices, and anything of value, at home. We understand that some students have
phones to keep in contact with parents before and after school. Students bring
electronic devices on school property or to school activities at their own risk. The school
is not responsible for borrowed, misused, lost, stolen, or damaged electronic devices.

Materials – All books and school supplies assigned to the students are their
responsibility. Each student will have a number assigned to his or her books. Any
unaccounted for books will need to be paid for by the student.

School work – All work must be legible and done in pencil! Any work that is
excessively messy or difficult to read will be turned back to the student to be
redone. Some assignments/projects during the year will be required to be typed. If this
is a problem, please let your student’s teacher know as soon as possible so other
arrangements can be made.

Independent Reading Book – Each student should have a book to read at all times.
There are books in the classroom to choose from and they may be checked out. We
will also go to the school library every week to check out books.

Monday Envelopes – Every Monday (or Tuesday, when there is no school Monday)
students will take home a folder which contains all of the graded work from the previous
week, as well as a weekly class newsletter and general school information. Please
review the papers and check Power School to ensure that all scores have been
accounted for. (mistakes are made occasionally, but grades cannot be changed without
seeing the work.) Students must return these folders to school the next day! If
students do not bring home this folder, parents please ask them for it!

Celebrations- As a school, we ask that birthday celebrations be kept to a minimum in
order to not disrupt the school day. We will not have birthday parties at school, and we
ask that if you send out invitations for birthday parties you do so outside of school. In
keeping with the district wellness policy as well as respecting any allergy issues, we ask
that you do not bring in any food items for birthday celebrations. If you would like to
send something for your child to share with the class that is not a food item (birthday
pencils, yo-yo’s, party favors, etc.), please clear it with me ahead of time.

Lunch- All lunch payments must either be made online or through the main
office. Online payment is the preferred method of payment. To sign up for online
payments, make a payment, or manage your balance online,
visit: www.MyPaymentsPlus.com (Links to an external site.). You will need your
student’s ID number to complete registration. If you don’t know your child’s student ID,
please contact the school to obtain this information. Please make sure to select the
option to receive low balance notifications. To aid in managing your student’s account
on-the-go, MyPaymentsPlus also has a free mobile app available for iPhone, iPad and
Android phones. Sending cash or checks to school, while acceptable, are often less
reliable. If paying by check, please make it payable to Salt Lake City School Food
Services. Students will be allowed in the building a little early in the morning to come
pay. However, it might cause them to be late to class. While they won’t receive a tardy,
they will miss out on valuable instruction. So, please pay online whenever possible.
I have read and understood the 6th grade disclosure document.
