PUTTING COMMUNITY FIRST
There are few words to describe the challenges our
communities endured in 2020. From the loss of hundreds
of thousands of lives at the hand of COVID-19 to civil unrest,
we faced obstacles that many of us have never experienced
in our lifetimes. But the BGCD community—donors,
administrators, staff, and volunteers—banded together to not
only meet the needs of our Club members and their families
but the community at large.
Last Spring, BGCD made several mobile “Grab and Go”
stations available for a hot meal in area neighborhoods
with the most need. On the Club level, staff and volunteers
organized food and snack giveaways. We also encouraged
the community to get moving with a virtual step challenge
to celebrate Day for Kids. During the holiday season,
BGCD families received backpacks filled with books, a gift
card, and more in our first-ever drive-through book fair.
VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING & EVENTS
Keeping the safety of our stakeholders is paramount at BGCD.
At the start of the pandemic, we launched “BGCD at Home,”
an online portal filled with hours of on-demand programming.
Covering all of our core programming areas, members and
their parents have the opportunity to watch a variety of mini-
lessons, from culinary arts to crafts to vocabulary games, all in
the comfort of their homes.
BGCD took to the web for several of its fundraising events
and trainings. From our annual TOPPs event held on
Facebook Live to our first Community Conversations webinar
on mental health, BGCD adapted to communicate with
these stakeholders in a fun, yet safe way. Additionally, staff
participated in crucial diversity and inclusion training and
board of directors retreat, both facilitated online.
DOING WHATEVER IT TAKES TO
SUPPORT KIDS
There’s no doubt that the pandemic has deeply affected one
of the most vulnerable groups of the population - our youth.
Learning loss and declining mental health is a legitimate concern,
particularly in minority and low-income communities.
In the Fall, select BGCD Clubs opened their doors to assist
students and families impacted by the delay of in-person campus
instruction at their schools. These Temporary Learning Centers
were open daily and gave Club members the opportunity to utilize
the Clubs internet connections, computers, and laptops. Staff was
on hand to assist kids with connecting to their virtual classes.
In 2020, BGCD received the Boys & Girls Clubs of America League
of Eagles Silver Award! This award is granted to Clubs who
achieve a high level of engagement from its board of directors.OUR MISSION & PROGRAMS
BGCD’s mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need it most, to reach their full potential
as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Programming in three core areas meets the diverse needs and
interests of our 6,000 Club members, ages 6-18. These core areas include:
• Academic Success
• Good Character & Citizenship
• Healthy Lifestyles

JESUS SEGOVIA
2020 Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas Youth of the Year
Jesus Segovia was named the 2020 Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. He was a graduate of
Uplift Luna Preparatory and was a four-year member of the East Dallas Boys & Girls Club.
His family has seen its share of struggles. Growing
up he didn’t feel like he fit in. Although Jesus was
born in this country, his family only spoke Spanish
at home and he hadn’t really learned English, even
up to middle school. At the same time, his dad
struggled to find consistent work and his mom was
working day and night to support the entire family.
BGCD has became a beacon of hope for Jesus.
He describes it as “life-changing”. Because of his
situation, Jesus didn’t think college was in the
cards. But with the help of his Collegiate STEPs
mentor and the opportunity to go on college
tours, he has seen first-hand that the possibilities
are endless for people like him.
Jesus became active in his Club and community.
He spends evenings at the East Dallas Club
tutoring younger members. He was also been
active in track and field and attended the
Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute where he had the opportunity to visit Capitol Hill and speak to senators
about the problems the youth face every day.
Jesus is now attending Saint John’s University in Minnesota, majoring in entrepreneurship. He hopes to
influence his community and encourage them, just like BGCD has done for him.
“Boys & Girls Clubs has given me a glimpse into a future that I couldn’t picture before,” said Jesus.
