Awards for Study

AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME SCHOLARSHIPS
American Academy in Rome scholarships do not require a separate application. They can be applied for as part
of the AAR Classical Summer School application which is due on December 15, 2020.

American Academy in Rome Imperatrix SPQR Helen Aurora Gulamerian Scholarship
Qualifications: For applicants with financial need who study, work, or teach in the discipline of Classical
Studies. The Scholarship will be awarded by the American Academy in Rome upon recommendation of the
Classical Summer School Director and selection committee, and does not require a separate application. Those
wishing to be considered for the scholarship must indicate this on their application forms.
Amount of award: Between $1,950 and $2,600

American Academy in Rome James M. Collier Scholarship
Qualifications: Applicants must be graduate students of classics, ancient history, classical art or classical
archaeology; middle school, high school teachers and two-year college teachers, a significant component of
whose teaching involves Latin, ancient Greek or classical civilization, are also eligible. Preference will be given
to those qualified applicants who have not studied in Italy and who present a coherent plan for presenting the
material learned in the course in their teaching. The Collier Scholarship will be awarded by the American
Academy in Rome upon recommendation of the Classical Summer School Director and selection committee, and
does not require a separate application. Those wishing to be considered for the scholarship must indicate this
on their application forms. Applicants must be resident of or teach in or attend school in the states of Oregon,
Michigan and/or Alabama.
Amount of award: Up to a maximum of $4,500

American Academy in Rome Norma Goldman Scholarship
Qualifications: Applicants must be graduate students or middle school, high school teachers or two-year college
teachers, a significant component of whose teaching involves Latin, ancient Greek, or classical civilization.
Preference will be given to those qualified applicants who have not studied in Italy and who present a coherent
plan for presenting the material learned in the course in their teaching. The Goldman Scholarship will be
awarded by the American Academy in Rome upon recommendation of the Classical Summer School Director and
selection committee, and does not require a separate application. Those wishing to be considered for the
scholarship must indicate this on their application forms.
Amount of award: Up to a maximum of $4,500

American Academy in Rome Captain William Edward McGinn, Squad 18 FDNY Scholarship
This award was established in memory of "Bill" McGinn, who lost his life responding to the attacks on the World
Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001. The endowment for this award comes through the
generosity of the McGinn family and the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies. As a condition of the award,
recipients of this scholarship are required to procure lodging that the ICCS facility while participating in the
Classical Summer School. Applicants must be graduate students. The McGinn Scholarship will be awarded by
the American Academy in Rome upon recommendation of the Classical Summer School Director and selection
committee, and does not require a separate application. Those wishing to be considered for the scholarship
must indicate this on their application forms.

American Academy in Rome Mary A. Sollman Scholarship
Qualifications: Applicants must be graduate students (or mature undergraduate students) of classics, ancient
history, classical art, or classical archaeology; middle school, high school teachers and two-year college
teachers, a significant component of whose teaching involves Latin, ancient Greek, or classical civilization are
also eligible. Preference will be given to those qualified applicants who have not studied in Italy, and to those
applicants enrolled at colleges and universities that are Member Institutions of the American Academy in Rome.
(Please see the Academy’s website for a current list.) The Sollman Scholarship will be awarded by the American
Academy in Rome upon recommendation of the Classical Summer School Director and selection committee, and
does not require a separate application. Those wishing to be considered for the scholarship must indicate this
on their application forms.

current information for the scholarships below.
2) Applications for the scholarships below must be completed separately from the Classical Summer School
application. It is the applicant’s responsibility to communicate directly with these scholarship sources.

The American Classical League Knudsvig, McKinlay, O’Donnell, and Phinney Commemorative Scholarship
Qualifications: Applicants must have been members of the ACL for at least three years,* including the current
school year, may only apply every four years, and must be planning to teach Classics at the elementary or
secondary school level during the following school year (college teachers are not eligible). *Graduate students
and new teachers with less than 3 years experience are exempt from this requirement.

Classical Association of the Atlantic States E. Adelaide Hahn Scholarship (Two Awards)
In honor of E. Adelaide Hahn, one or two awards of up to $7,000 will be made in the spring toward the cost of
study in the summer session of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens or the American Academy in
Rome.
Qualifications: Applicants must be current CAAS members at the time of application. Preference will be given to
members with longevity, pre-college teachers, graduate students, and those who have not previously received
this award, with priority given to those who live and work in the CAAS region. Scholarship winners are expected
to report on their summer study at the CAAS annual meeting in October. For further information, please see the

Amount of the award: approximately $7,000.

Classical Association of the Empire State Terry Walker Scholarship and the John E. Rexine Summer Study
Grant (Two awards)
Qualifications: Walker award: Applicants must have completed high school or the sophomore year in a college or
university in New York State. Preference is given to a student who is preparing to teach Latin on the elementary
or secondary school level. Rexine award: CAES member who is a full-time Latin and/or Greek teacher who wishes
to further his or her study in the Classics.
Amount of awards: Up to $1,000 for the Walker award; up to $1,000 for the Rexine award.

Classical Association of the Middle West and South The Mary A. Grant Award and The Janice and Herbert
Benario Awards (Two awards)
Qualifications To be eligible for a Grant or Benario Award, one must be a current member of CAMWS who either
holds a teaching position in Greek or Latin in an elementary or secondary school within CAMWS territory; or is
enrolled as a graduate student in a degree-granting Classics program within CAMWS territory. The Mary A.
Grant Award is a full fellowship for attending the summer session of the American Academy in Rome. Priority for
the Benario Award will be given to applicants interested in summer programs other than the Classical Summer
School of the American Academy in Rome, which is normally funded by the Grant Award. Applicants can still
apply for both, but only in the absence of qualified candidates for the Benario will applicants for the AAR be

Classical Association of New England The Cornelia Catlin Coulter Memorial Scholarship
Qualifications: All applicants must have been members of CANE in good standing for at least two full and
consecutive years to apply for the award. During that time, and at the time of application, all applicants must
have been teaching Latin in an elementary or secondary school, public or private, within the geographical
boundaries of CANE.

Classical Association of the Pacific Northwest
Qualifications: Graduating high school seniors, primary and secondary school teachers or students preparing to
teach at the primary or secondary school level who are interested in Classics. Applicants should be residents of,
teach or attend school in the geographical area represented by CAPN (Montana, Washington, Oregon, Idaho,
British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan).

Eta Sigma Phi Scholarship to the American Academy in Rome
Qualifications: This scholarship is open to initiated members of Eta Sigma Phi who have received the Bachelor’s
degree within eight (8) years prior to application (or shall have received it by June 1 of the current year) and who
have not received a doctoral degree.
Amount of award: up to $3,575

National Latin Exam:Christine Fernald Sleeper Educational Travel Award
Qualifications: The Christine Fernald Sleeper Educational Travel Award is designed to support teachers of Latin
by encouraging educational travel. This award may be used to enroll in an established program abroad, such as
the American Academy in Rome, a trip to a classical site, such as those offered by the Vergilian Society, or an
educational trip of one's own design.

New Jersey Classical Association Edna White Rome Scholarship

Ohio Classical Conference Charles T. Murphy Scholarship for Foreign Studies
Qualifications: The Charles T. Murphy foreign study scholarship is being offered for a formal summer study
program, such as the American Academy in Rome, The Vergilian Society (any tour conducted by the Society), or
the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Qualifications The scholarship is open to any teacher of
Classics at the pre-college level in Ohio (i.e., elementary, middle, or high school level), who is currently a
member of the Ohio Classical Conference.

The Society for Classical Studies Coffin Fellowship for Travel in Classical Lands
Qualifications: The Fellowship is intended to recognize secondary-school teachers of Greek or Latin who are as
dedicated to their students as the Coffins themselves by giving them the opportunity to enrich their teaching
and their lives through direct acquaintance with the classical world. It will support study in classical lands (not
limited to Greece and Italy); the recipient may use it to attend an educational program in (e.g. American
Academy, American School) or to undertake an individual plan of study or research. It may be used either for
summer study or during a sabbatical leave, and it may be used to supplement other awards or prizes.
Candidates for the Fellowship must have been teaching Latin or Ancient Greek at the secondary level (grades 9-
12) in North America as a significant part of their academic responsibilities for three years out of the five prior
to the award. Membership in the APA is not a requirement for application, although it is expected that
applicants will have demonstrated an active interest in the profession and in their own professional
development. Selection will be made on the basis of written applications by the Coffin Fellowship Committee.
Recipients of the award will be expected to file a written report on their use of the Fellowship, which the
Association may include in one of its publications. Check the SCS website for additional details, including
application instructions and deadline, which is typically in February.
Amount of award: $3,100.

The Society for Classical Studies Frank M. Snowden, Jr. Undergraduate Fellowship
Qualifications: The Committee on Diversity in the Profession of the Society for Classical Studies (SCS) invites
applications from undergraduate students from historically underrepresented groups across North America for
scholarships to be awarded for Summer 2021. The purpose of the scholarships is to further students’ study of
classics or classical archaeology with opportunities not available during the school year. Eligible proposals
might include (but are not limited to) participation in classical summer programs or field schools in the
Mediterranean or language training at institutions in the U.S., Canada, or Europe. Candidates will be judged on
the basis of (a) their academic qualifications, including demonstrated ability in fields that prepare a student
for further study in Classics or archaeology, (b) the quality of their proposal, and (c) financial need. The
application must be supported by two letters of recommendation. At least one letter of recommendation must
include a statement indicating that this is an appropriate candidate for the purposes of this scholarship. See

Amount of award: The maximum amount of each award will be $4,500.

Texas Classical Association The Peter Snetsinger TCA Professional Scholarship
Qualifications: All teachers and professors are encouraged to apply for the $500 TCA Professional Scholarship.
This scholarship is intended to support projects undertaken by members of the association who have at least
two years of full-time classroom teaching experience in classical languages or cultures. The applicant must
have been an active TCA member for at least two years. The project may involve attendance at a course, foreign
travel (preferably with some specific goals), the creation of materials, or any other worthwhile activity connected
to the teaching of classical languages or cultures. Stress is placed on the contribution of the project to the
applicant's future skills as a classics teacher. The scholarship must be used within one calendar year from
receipt. In addition, a report of the recipient's activities or project will be made at the next TCA fall conference
following completion. Recipients will be eligible to reapply after five years.
