Cheshire Treasures - Salt, Soap & Silk 5 days
A fascinating short break based in and around Cheshire. Here you can enjoy some of the marvels
that made Britain great. Beautiful buildings, wonders from the canal age and the best traditional
industries.

Monday Travel to Chester visiting Dagfields Crafts & Antiques, arriving at the hotel with time to
relax before dinner.
Tuesday to Thursday Travel to Northwich for a ride on a masterpiece of Victorian engineering, the
Anderton Boat Lift, then continue for the short journey to Lion Salt Works for a fascinating visit to find out
about the 2000 year old industry.
The Wirral. Visit Port Sunlight, built by William Hesketh Lever for the workers in his soap factory (home of
Sunlight Soap) with a visit to the museum and a guided tour of the village. Continue via Hoylake, West
Kirby & Heswall before returning to Chester for the remainder of the afternoon at leisure.
Travel across the Cheshire Plains to Macclesfield, the traditional home of the silk industry with a visit to
Paradise Mill, a restored silk works. Continue afterwards through part of the Peak District National Park to

visit in the UK. Over the next few days enjoy a cruise along the Manchester Ship Canal, a nostalgic

CBBC, BBC Sport and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, to name just a few. Well-informed and friendly

rhinos, zebras, ostriches and buffalo. Enter the land of the carnivores, with cheetahs, African wild dogs
and the majestic African lion, before finally reaching the elephant valley.
The rest of the day is then at your leisure to discover the park's many wildlife attractions, like penguin
cove, the sea lion theatre, hippo lake, meerkat mayhem and lemur woods, together with the Land of Living
Dinosaurs - the UK's largest animatronic dinosaur park. Leave the park late afternoon to make our way
back to West Wales.

Enjoy a 90 minute circular cruise on the Way and Arundel Canal travels along the idyllic Loxwood Link
section of the canal before heading for Arundel town and a visit to Arundel Castle, one of the longest
inhabited castle in England.
Thursday This morning you can take the optional excursion for a ride on the Bluebell Railway
from Sheffield Park to East Grinstead and return, before returning to Brighton for an afternoon at leisure to

Chatsworth is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and has been passed down through 16
generations of the Cavendish family. The house and surrounding estate has been used in many period TV
dramas and films.
The World of Wedgwood, a unique, interactive visitor experience celebrating the very best of British
craftsmanship. Experience Wedgwood for the day through shopping, food, visitor tours and art and craft
workshops.
The contemporary revival of the famous Italian Gardens at Trentham was led by renowned designer and
multi-Chelsea gold-medal winner Tom Stuart-Smith. At the centre of Trentham Gardens is the mile long,
Capability Brown designed, Trentham Lake and to the east of the Italian Gardens are the Rivers of Grass
and the adjacent Floral Labyrinth.
Friday Return to West Wales visiting Dagfields Crafts & Antiques - 7 Giant Emporiums contain
50,000 sq ft of antiques and collectables with over 250 dealers on site. 25 Craft Workshops specialise in
everything from handmade soaps to bespoke garden furniture. Homemade food is served in our tea

Tuesday Drive up through Cavan and Navan into the fabulous Fermanagh Lakelands before

Wednesday & Thursday Free time to explore, Sligo was crowned the ‘Land of Heart’s Desire’ by WB
Yeats, and the beauty of this region explains why he displayed such passion for his homeland. Begin with
a visit to Lissadell House, an elegant Regency mansion with striking interiors and galleries set in beautiful
grounds offering sweeping views of Sligo Bay, then finish with a drive around Lough Gill to finf Parkes
Castle.
Visit Donegal with free time to explore this lovely town. Why not visit the ruined Abbey of the Four
Masters, Donegal Castle on the banks of the River Eske, or try on some Irish tweeds at Magee’s. This
afternoon we enjoy the highlight of your tour with a trip up to the viewpoint on Slieve League to see these
incredible sea cliffs soaring 2000ft above the Atlantic – a truly wild and wonderful sight!
Friday From Sligo we travel south through the heart of Ireland visiting Athlone before heading to
Wexford for our last night.

Thursday An early departure for the northbound journey to for the first night.
Friday We continue north and west with a 1 hour cruise on the queen of Scottish lochs, Loch Lo-
mond,
before travelling via the Pass of Brander to Oban.
Saturday A day in the company of a local guide around the Argyll peninsula visiting Lochgilphead and
Inverary. Alternatively join The Three Isles Tour - Mull, Iona & Staffa (10hrs) with West Coast Tours.
Sunday We depart Oban and travel via the majestic and historic Glenn Coe calling in to the visitor
centre
before continuing north to Fort William. From Fort William we stop at The Commando Memorial with views of
Ben Nevis. The Commando Memorial is a Category A listed monument dedicated to the men of the original
British Commando Forces. It overlooks the training areas of the Commando Training Depot established in
1942 at Achnacarry Castle. We then travel through the Great Glen alongside Loch Ness visiting Urquhart
Castle, before arriving in Inverness late afternoon.
Monday Today we head north crossing the Moray Firth, the Black Isle & Cromarty Firth en -route to the
Glenmorangie or Glen Ord Distillery for a tour and tasting. We visit Dornoch over lunchtime before returning
via the ‘Apline’ like resort of Strathpeffer to arrive in Inverness, the capital of the highlands for a few hours at
leisure.

Tuesday As we start our journey south, we visit Culloden, a powerfully emotive and atmospheric bat-
tlefield where the 1745 Jacobite Rising came to a tragic end. Experience the powerful emotions of the Battle of
Culloden in the visitor centre’s 360-degree battle immersion theatre, which puts you right in the heart of the
action. Discover the true story of the 1745 Rising, from both the Jacobite and Government perspectives, in the
accredited museum, where unique artefacts from the time are displayed. We continue via Grantown on Spey,
Glenlivet and Tomintoul in to the heart of the Cairngorms passing the Lecht Ski Centre. In the afternoon we
drop down to the beautiful Royal Deeside and travel via Balmoral to Braemar and on to Pitlochry.
Wednesday After the busy touring of the last 6 days, today you have the option of a relaxing day in
the
beautiful town of Pitliochry, one of Scotlands tourist highlights. Set in the Athol region on the edge of The
Cairngorms National Park, there are numerous shops, activities, and also opportunities available to get out
there to sample the wilds of the highlands.
There is the option here of joining the Mountain Safari:-
With your kilted Safari Ranger, share their passion for Nature, Culture, History and breath-taking scenery.
Armed with cameras and binoculars, climb aboard your Land Rover and journey to the high tops through a
land sculptured by the elements and steeped in history, culture, nature, and breath-taking views with no
shortage of photo opportunities.
You may even be lucky enough to see the Majestic Red Deer, the Famous Grouse, the elusive Mountain Hare
or the soaring Golden Eagle as you travel through forests, mountains and moors on private hill tracks. This
Safari will inspire you with an insight into this magnificent natural wilderness and leave you with memories to
last a lifetime.
Included in the Mountain Safari are tea, coffee, Kenmore Shortbread and a dram of Dewars Whisky. This

Thursday & Friday Alas it is time to head south toward home, but en-route we head for Edinburgh for a

This morning, we enjoy a half day ‘step-on’ guided tour of Constable Country, which travel through
Dedham Vale, where John Constable lived and created most of his paintings. IN ther afternoon we enjoy a
short journey on the Colne Valley Railway along its mile long track alongside relocated station buildings,
