Charles Sturt News in a Flash Page | 42 IN THE MEDIA
Media covering the issue on a daily basis have been:
2.1 Potential removal of tree at Beverley
ABC radio interviewed a past employee from the former Myer Warehouse site in Beverley who raised
concerns about the potential loss of a tree due to a development proposal for a vacant parcel of land.
2.2 Longest Table fundraiser
Local newspapers promoted the Indoor Picnic to raise funds to support the Hospital Research
Foundation.
2.3 Rate Capping
The State Government’s proposal for capping of council rates has been a frequent topic of discussion
across all media channels in recent weeks. The proposal has been put forward as a ‘cost of living’
reform, designed to bring relief to South Australian household expenses with average rate rises over
the last decades frequently quoted as exceeding other bills . Rate capping is also advocated as a
critical tool for bringing reform and greater transparency to the Local Government sector.
The Local Government Association has sought to bring balance and fact into the debate, highlighting
the reality of rate capping impacts on local communities and democracy, as evidenced by eastern
state experiences. The lack of clarity around the policy and the use of the ESCOSA to determine the
maximum rate have also been heavily criticised.
This week, the State Opposition joined SA Best and the Greens to publicly reject the Government’s
rate capping proposal, advising that they will not back its introduction. In its place they intend to
table their own draft bill to reform South Australian Local Government, which will include the
introduction of a Commissioner to respond to complaints and disputes and provide independent
scrutiny of council budgets.
