Zahidah@uds.net.my ADDRESS AT IEW’15THE ENERGY SECTOR IN SARAWAK
A MARKET OVERVIEW
Sarawak, with its abundant primary resources, can be developed for power generation, e.g. oil,
gas, and coal. Hydropower represents the largest indigenous renewable energy resource in
Malaysia, with a technically exploitable potential of 123,000 GWh per annum, of which 70%
lies in Sarawak's interior.
Adding to the 2,400 megawatts (MW) capacity of Bakun hydroelectric project worth RM21
billion, owned by the Malaysian Government, and the 944 MW from the Murum, the state will
have a potential of close to 7,400 MW by 2025.
SEB is set to become a major power player if Sarawak can transmit electricity to neighbours
like Indonesia, Singapore and West Malaysia.
By the year 2050, it is estimated that renewable energy will make up 50% of energy
consumption.
OIL AND GAS SECTOR IN SARAWAK
– A MARKET OVERVIEW
Malaysia held 75 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of proven natural gas reserves as of January 2007,
and much of the country’s natural gas production comes from Eastern Malaysia, especially
offshore Sarawak.
Malaysia has three LNG processing plants, all located in a massive complex at Bintulu (East
Malaysia) and supplied by the oshore natural gas fields at Sarawak.
The Bintulu facility is the largest LNG complex in the world, with a total liquefaction
capacity of 22.7 MMt (1.1 Tcf) per year. Petronas holds majority equity stakes in all three
LNG plants at Bintulu: Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), MLNG Dua, and MLNG Tiga.
E&P activities in Malaysia continue to focus in offshore areas, especially in deepwater
blocks. There a number of on-going PSC projects set to expand natural gas production in
Malaysia.
