Many locals around the region paid their respects at dawn in their driveways, remembering those who fought
and have fallen for our country. It was a heart-warming tribute considering the time we are currently in with the
restrictions of not being able to attend normal commemoration services. Thank you to all those who organised
and participated.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ARAMAC POLICE
On Monday 27 April 2020 police received information from a concerned community member relating to the
recent unlawful behaviour of an unknown person or persons. This reckless behaviour relates to the unlawful and
inhumane killing of western grey and red kangaroos at three different locations on the Muttaburra town
common between Friday 24 April 2020 and Monday 27 April 2020.
A total of eight grey or red kangaroos were killed by a high velocity rifle. The location of the projectile entry
wounds suggests that some of these kangaroos did not die humanely. Some had to be humanely destroyed
when found. Some of the female kangaroos were found to have a live joey in the pouch when inspected by a
wildlife carer. This reckless behaviour has resulted in a variety of offences being committed including; discharge
firearm on common land, unlawful killing of animals and animal cruelty.
As a result of this information a multi-agency investigation has commenced involving officers from;
Queensland Police Service, Department of Environment and Science Macropod Management Unit and
Barcaldine Regional Council. As part of this ongoing investigation CCTV cameras may be deployed to capture
the actions of the person or persons responsible.
I take this opportunity to remind everyone in our community that there is currently a government-imposed
restriction on the harvesting of western grey kangaroos in the Western Queensland area. The land known as
‘town commons’ is controlled by Barcaldine Regional Council and as such is public land. It is an offence to
discharge a firearm on public land. If for some reason you must kill an animal it must be for a lawful reason, the
killing of an animal for dog food or fishing bait is not a lawful reason. If you fail to kill the animal humanly or
check that the kangaroo has a joey in its pouch then you are being cruel to the animal.
If anyone has information as to the identity of the person or person’s responsible for this reckless and unlawful
behaviour, I urge you to contact me, Policelink 13 14 44 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
