The exact origins of surfing
are not certain, but it was
first observed by Europeans
on a ship in Tahiti back in
1767.
Research suggests that
surfing dates back to the
ancient Polynesian cultures
that existed long ago.
According to data collected
and many myths, the chief
of a tribe was the man who
could surf the best!www.waveproject.co.uk www.waveproject.co.uk Colour in! We have a selection of drawings to colour in, varying in difficulty let’s see how colourful you can make them! @WaveProject Wave Project waveprojectuk @WaveProject Wave Project waveprojectuk

Leaf hunt Sea-life facts
Each week, we will be sharing some interesting facts about
How many of these leaves can you find on your walks or in your some of the wonderful sea-life we have around the UK, this
garden? week, we’re talking about Sunfish and Plankton!
Tick them off as you find them and see if you can get them all!
Sunfish
• Sunfish are odd looking creatures and very large; they can weigh
Beech more than a car!
• They also lay more eggs than any other animal on earth!
Alder
• In Germany, they are called ‘swimming heads’ because of their
strange shape!
Ash • Sunfish spend their time eating jellyfish, which are actually
poisonous to them! This is why they swim on their sides on the
very surface of the water; the sun burns off the toxins that build
up in their bodies from the jellyfish – this is why they are called

Bioluminescent Plankton
Rowan
• This is a long word – but basically, plankton are the tiny little
creatures that live in the sea which are too small to see, and
Hazel
‘bioluminescent’ just means that they glow beautiful colours!
• At some times of the year in Cornwall, especially in hot
summers, you can be lucky enough to see millions of plankton
Field Maple Oak together in the sea giving out amazing bright light, so that as the
water moves you can see beautiful colours!
• Even though plankton are tiny, they are extremely important in
the food chain and for humans too! 70% of the oxygen that we
need to breathe in the air actually comes from what plankton
breathe out!
