Jam tarts!
These simple favourites take just 30 minutes to make with your kids!

What flavours are you going to make?

Ingredients:

• 500g sweet shortcrust pastry
• 20 tsp jam (whatever flavours you want)

Method:

1. Roll out the shortcrust pastry on a lightly floured surface to just
under the thickness of £1 coin. Stamp out 20 x 5cm circles using a
pastry cutter and line 2 mini muffin tins (or make in 2 batches).
2. Prick with a fork and spoon 1 tsp jam into each (we used apricot,
blackcurrant and strawberry). Stamp out shapes from the leftover
pastry to decorate the tarts, if you like.
3. Bake at 200C/180C fan/gas 6 for 12-15 mins, until the pastry is
   golden.

Chocolate chip muffins!

Ingredients

• 250g self-raising flour
• 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
• 150g chocolate chips, milk, white, dark or a mix of all three
• 100g golden caster sugar
• 2 eggs, lightly beaten
• 150ml natural yogurt
• 100g unsalted butter, melted

Method

1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and line a 12-hole
muffin tin with paper cases. Sift the flour and bicarbonate of
soda into a large bowl, then stir in the chocolate chips and
sugar. Add the beaten eggs, yogurt and butter, and stir to
combine. It doesn’t matter if the mixture looks a bit lumpy,
it’s more important not to overmix or the muffins will turn
   out tough.
2. Fill the paper cases and bake for 20-25 mins until risen and
golden brown. Transfer to a rack to cool – or eat slightly
warm. Will keep for three days in an airtight container.

Rainbow in a glass!
What you need:
• Water
• A mug
• 5 separate cups
• A Tablespoon
• A clear glass
• A dropper or pipette
• Skittles

Lets get started!
1. Separate the Skittles into the cups, in these amounts: 2 red, 4 orange, 6
yellow, 8 green, and 10 purple.
2. Heat a mug of water in the microwave for a minute and a half (or long
enough that the water is hot, but not boiling). Be careful removing the
   water from the microwave–it’s hot!
3. Measure and pour two tablespoons of hot water into each cup, on top of
   the Skittles.
4. Stir each cup carefully so no water splashes out. The cups need to be cool
for the next part of the experiment, so leave them somewhere where they
won’t get knocked over. Stir them every ten minutes or so until the Skittles
are dissolved and the water is room temperature.
5. Using the dropper, add the colored water from the five cups to the clear
glass. Start with purple, then add green, then yellow, orange, and red last.
Go slowly here, we don’t want the different layers to mix.
6. Congratulations, you made a rainbow. You didn’t even have to go outside!

How does it work?

Skittles are mostly made of sugar. When you add hot water to them, the sugar
dissolves and the coloring on the shell of the Skittles turns the water different
colors. The cup with only two red Skittles doesn’t have as much sugar as the
cup with ten purple Skittles, but they both have the same amount of water. The
amount of matter packed into a certain amount of space is called the density of
the material. The red water is less dense than the purple water, so it will float
on top of the purple water.

Make your own turtle!

What you need:
• Egg cartons
• Paint - what ever colours you want your turtles!
• Pom poms for the turtle heads
• Googly eyes
• Pipe cleaners for the turtle legs
• Scissors
• Hot glue gun

Lets get started!
• For the turtle, simply paint one egg carton section. Let the paint dry and
then added details to the shell with a second color.
• To assemble the turtle, you’ll need a pom pom ball for the head, some
googly eyes, and pipe cleaners for the legs and tail.
• Fold each leg piece in half and then twist it together. Then hot glue gun the
twisted end to the inside of the shell.

Sea-life facts
Each week, we will be sharing some interesting facts about
some of the wonderful sea-life we have around the UK, this
week, we’re talking about Basking Sharks and Octopus.

Basking Sharks
• They eat plankton which are tiny animals in the water that are
so small it’s very hard to see them with your eyes. They filter
these plankton out of sea water by swimming along with their
mouth wide open, which looks funny and a bit scary, but they
are harmless and would never hurt you!
• Their mouth opens up to 1m wide, the same as this meter
  stick!!
• They are the second largest fish in the ocean, after the whale
  shark.

Octopus

Octopus are very amazing animals – they are very very clever; they
can solve puzzles and use tools, and are very good at escaping
from tanks in aquariums!

• An octopus has 3 hearts and 9 brains! They also have blue
blood, just like the velvet swimming crabs.
• They are able to change colour to blend into their surroundings,
and to communicate with each other. When an octopus is angry
or excited, they can turn bright red, but then if they want to
hide, they can change colour to match the sand or rocks so they
  are nearly impossible to see!
• If they are in danger, they can also shoot black ink out of their
body to make the water go cloudy, so if something was trying to
eat them, they can’t see it and the octopus is able to escape!
