BARBERING,
BEAUTY AND
HAIRDRESSING
From opening your own salon, to working in film
and TV, or gaining employment aboard some
of the world’s most luxurious cruise ships, the
wealth of opportunities in the barbering, beauty
and hairdressing sectors are vast and hugely
varied.

Housed in purpose built salons, the Barbering,
Beauty and Hairdressing department at Preston’s
College provides learners with access to live
clients, real salon environments and industry
experienced tutors, who have spent years
perfecting their trades.

For those looking to start out, we offer both
Introductory Diplomas and Level 2 Certificates,
with progression right up to specialist courses at
Level 3 and treatment specific CPD sessions.

For those already working in the sector, looking
to upskill with additional skills and knowledge,
we are able to offer valuable CPD courses,
including Advanced Hairdressing qualifications
and treatment specific courses in nails, lashes
and the ever popular, spray tanning.

With over 9,790 hairdressers and barbers
employed in Lancashire and an extra 2,267 salons
appearing on the high street since 2012 (414 in
the last 12 months) there has never been a better
time to pursue your ambitions, or add to an
already established skills set.

ICT COURSES
ICT qualifications not only open doors to a range of new careers and course opportunities, but are becoming
increasingly essential skills for everyday life. From sending emails and creating spreadsheets, to editing and
perfecting photographs, there is much more to IT than basic laptop work.

Preston’s College offer a variety of qualifications for all levels of ICT ability. Our ECDL courses are ideal for the
absolute beginner, perhaps looking to learn for personal use or to enter the business profession, whilst those
with vast Adobe knowledge will benefit from our evening study, digital design programmes. These courses
explore selection techniques, layers, masking and blending modes, using Photoshop.

Our digital design courses, which house the suite of Photoshop qualifications and our CAD/CAM provision can be
enrolled upon by visiting our website and submitting an application.

Entry Level to Level 2 ECDL qualifications require an assessment prior to enrolment, to determine the right level of
study for each applicant.

An assessment will be arranged when you apply online at: www.preston.ac.uk/online-application/

MEET ZAC
Zac has more than a decade of experience in
     construction after studying an apprenticeship
at Preston’s College. Wanting to share his
extensive technical skills, he completed his
Certificate in Education and now teaches the
     next generation of aspiring bricklayers.

“I was nervous about the course as I wasn’t the
most academic but I had every confidence in my
technical knowledge and experience and wanted
to share my expertise with the next generation.
My tutor provided full support throughout my
studies, giving me confidence in myself and my
ability to deliver lessons. Good teachers make a
lasting impact on the lives of their learners, which
is why I came back to study at Preston’s College,
as I had a fantastic experience as a school leaver.
I am now in the final year of my second degree
with Preston’s College, awarded by The University
of Derby. I am hoping to top up, with a BA (Hons)
degree next year and then progress onto a
     Master’s Degree in Education.”

CONSTRUCTION
The construction industry is essential for our local economy
and has been identified as a priority sector for Lancashire.
Currently, there is a huge skills shortage with the industry
being placed in the top five sectors requiring employees,
due to sector growth from 2018 - 2028. This high demand
for skilled people is also reflected in the generous starting
salaries, with university graduates taking home an average
salary per year of over £29,000 and a Site Manager, an
average of over £49,000 per year.

Right on our doorstep, the Preston, South Ribble and
Lancashire City Deal is investing more than £434 million,
creating 20,000 new jobs and building 17,000 new homes
to improve the county. Construction companies across
Lancashire continue to seek highly skilled people to fill a
  range of in demand roles.

For those looking to start out, we offer a selection of Level 1
Certificates and Diplomas, in everything from Bricklaying to
Wall and Floor Tiling – ideal for those looking to develop their
DIY skills further or study the basics of a trade alongside a
full-time job. These courses are also ideal for those looking
to take their first steps onto a complete career change.

For those already working in the sector, the Construction
department, housed in the purpose built Eric Wright Learning
Centre, offers Level 2 Certificates and Diplomas, Level 3 and 4
NVQs and a range of HNC qualifications, alongside our brand
new Access to Construction; the gateway to an array of
professional careers within this growing sector for those
looking to return to education and progress onto degree
  level study.

COUNSELLING
Counsellors play a crucial role in improving
the health and wellbeing of our society. The
Government is investing an additional £1 billion
in 2020/21 to mental health services , aiming
to ensure that one million more people have
access to high quality care. Working in
confidential settings, counsellors work with a
variety of people across a range of often
challenging and complex issues. Ensuring
practitioners have the self-reflection and
resilience to support people as they work
through these issues is a common thread
throughout all of the counselling courses at
Preston’s College, from Level 2 to BSc (Hons).

Counselling Services can be found in a variety
of settings including schools, universities,
colleges, GP surgeries, hospitals, in the workplace,
addiction agencies, disability support groups and
private practice. Sometimes counsellors will have
dual roles, such as a Nurse, Teacher or Advice
Worker, meaning counselling can often be a
second career for many.

For those looking to change career, you will
begin your studies at Level 2 with opportunities,
upon successful completion, to progress onto
Level 3 and Level 4 studies, whilst those already
employed in the sector, looking to take their
education to a higher level, will find the
Foundation degree and BSc (Hons) Top-Up
degree the ideal opportunity to achieve
qualifications which reflect experience, skill
level and already held sector based knowledge.

ENGINEERING
Engineering courses at Preston’s College are
housed in the impressive i-STEM Centre; a
multi-million pound, purpose built facility
offering a dynamic learning environment,
including an advanced manufacturing
workshop and a host of 3D printers, designed to
help you formulate ideas, test briefs and present
findings.

Engineering continues to be a highly sought
after profession, with engineers and technicians
amongst some of the most in-demand positions
in the world.

With 2018 seeing a shortfall of over 170,000
qualified workers for UK science and engineering
roles and estimations that more than 2.65 million
UK engineering jobs need filling by 2024, there
has never been a better time to study with us and
pursue a career in this highly exciting industry.

For those looking to begin their career, the Level 3
Engineering Subsidiary Diploma provides an ideal
introduction to this highly diverse subject.

Higher level and CPD opportunities are afforded
by a suite of HNC and HND level qualifications,
whilst those looking for bespoke opportunities
will find the CAD, CAM, APM and coded welding
qualifications of particular benefit.
