Constructed in 1916, the building hosted the offices of the land, taxes and duties where the citizens
would go to pay taxes. Its lines recall medieval and Renaissance architectural features, an eclectic
combination not unpleasant although sometimes approximate. Around 1926 the building was
completed with a tower with simple and three-lights windows. The side of the tower overlooking Piazza
XX Settembre was enriched with a marble coat of arms showing the Visconti snake, dating back
perhaps to the 14th century, which was once above the main door of the old Customs House. It now
hosts temporary exhibitions and the Section of Contemporary Art, of Graphics and Photography of the
City Art Gallery, Osservatorio Alpinistico Lecchese and Polo della Montagna, where artifacts and
documents belonging to CAI Lecco are collected.

Situated in the district of Castello, one of the oldest district of Lecco, the Palace is a precious building
dating back to the late 18th century and today the house of Musei Civici: the Archaeological Museum

                                                      5
(eight rooms with relics from all over the province, dating from the Medium Paleolithic period to the
High Middle Ages and Celtic grave goods from the First and Second Iron Age and the early medieval
goldsmith works); the Museum of Natural History (which exhibits in twelve rooms zoological,
mineralogical, malacological and palaeontological collections among which is the extremely rare
“Lariosauro”); the History Museum (which displays collections regarding the contemporary history of
the Lecco area, divided in the Risorgimento Room, the Lecco Industry Virtual Room and the
Resistance Room). Opened in January 2005, the Planetarium is situated in a completely new wing of
the Palace and it represents one of the best structures of this type in Italy. The room shows an
exhibition of astronomical equipment (binoculars, telescopes, etc.) and reproduces the sky as it
appears to the naked eye, with extreme realism and charm. But the heart of the Planetarium is the
computerized projection system of the latest generation which can project the image of 3200 stars on
a dome which acts as a screen. The Planetarium organizes projections, conferences and observations
for adults and students. Every year April it hosts the National Astronautics Convention.

The exhibition center of Villa Manzoni, renovated in November 2019, is a historical-literary route with
various multimedia and interactive elements. The museum had been the mansion of the Manzoni
family for two centuries. It was sold by the writer in 1818 to the Scola’s, who maintained it unchanged
until the 1960s, when it was given to the Municipality of Lecco. Alessandro Manzoni spent his
childhood and adolescence in this house. The Manzonian Museum, located on the ground floor,
exhibits in 13 rooms paintings, first editions, manuscripts and memorabilia of the life and works of
Alessandro Manzoni. Inside the various rooms you can observe eighteenth-century frescoes, personal
objects of the writer such as the cradle and baptismal kit, his and family portraits, inkwells. The
"grisaglie room" has been refurbished with original furniture, while room 6 displays a series of original
editions of Manzoni's works.
There is also a "Manzoni Pop" room where visitors can open display cases and chests of drawers with
examples of Italian and foreign books, texts by researchers from the typography of Manzoni's Places,
comics, postcards. The visit then continues between sections of the silent version of the film directed
by Bonnard (1922) and posters narrating versions of The Betrothed and particular related events, such
as the Nun of Monza.

                                                     6
The chapel has been rearranged with various works of art and with documentation of Manzoni's
funeral, set with the music of the Requiem composed by Verdi in homage to the great writer, after his
death.

Until 1782 the town of Lecco was completely fortified with walls which bound it in a unusual triangular
shape. That year, according to some reforms required by the emperor Giuseppe II, the castle and
walls were demolished. The Tower, the keep of the castle, remained up and, after having been
restored by the architect Giuseppe Bovara in 1816, it was used as a prison. In 1932, after further
restoration, the Tower was given to the City of Lecco by the State in order to become the History
Museum of the city and nowadays it hosts temporary exhibitions.

The church in the Caleotto district, built between 1947 and 1951 on a project by the architect Carlo
Wilhelm, stands out for its very singular religious architectural style, an example of innovation starting
from the curious "tent" shape. Inside you can admire a fresco by Orlando Sora depicting the Last

from the end of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century, many iron industries flourished.
Another particularity of the church is its consecration, which took place on 18th March 2012, sixty years
after its construction, by the hand of Cardinal Angelo Scola, now archbishop emeritus of Milan.

ravines and chapels. Thanks to its environmental characteristics, it is part of the Association of
Significant Cemeteries of Europe (ASCE). At the foot of the Corno Medale, rocky spurs with caves and
ravines create a sort of natural amphitheater which houses the cemetery, several private chapels of
the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the ancient cemetery church of San Giovanni ai Morti
and the chapels of Via Crucis. From the terraces you can enjoy a splendid view of the city of Lecco

Around 1818, Pietro Monti transformed an old building for felting wool, with annexed water ditch and
waterwheel, into a silk factory. In 1869 he enlarged the construction and added an edifice for the
spinning of cocoons; after a long period of standstill in the activities the building was bought by the
Municipality in 1978. Since 1981 it started the restoration of the factory and of the ancient machines,
including a still functioning circular twisting machine from 1818.

It is situated in a splendid location in the Lezzeno district; it was built in 1690 in classic baroque style
(maybe under the initiative of architect Quadrio, only two years after the miracle that happened on
August 6th, 1688). That day Bartolomeo Mezzera saw the Madonna represented on a plaster
medallion crying tears of blood. The miracle was officially recognized and today the sanctuary is still a
destination for pilgrims. Inside there is a 1746 sophisticated major altar made by marbles and
furnishings, as well as the treasure, dating back to the 1700s.

Colico was chosen as location for this fort because of its position at the crossing between Valtellina
and Valchiavenna. This important road was used in previous centuries by invading armies since the
Middle Ages. The fort was completed at the end of 1914 and it is one of the most technological Italian
military compound of World War One. The four cannons are still in place today and they can fire with
great precision up to 12 kilometres of distance. Thanks to its leading position, the fort offers a
suggestive and unique landscape on Lake Como and on the Valtellina and Valchiavenna mountains.

It was built in 1603 to defend Milan from the enemies coming from the Canton Grigione. Its name
refers to the Spanish leader Pedro Enriquez de Acevedo Count of Fuentes. It was rapidly built by the
military engineer Gabrio Brusca and it is one of the best examples of “Italian fortress” during the
Spanish domination in the XVII century. The fort was demolished in 1796 by command of Napoleon
Bonaparte but it is still possible to see the most important structures, thanks to a guided tour in three

It seems that the tower of Fontanedo was built at the behest of Bernabò Visconti in 1357, on the
defensive line of the Upper Lake, but perhaps an existing structure was only strengthened. It is located
about 700 meters further downstream from the town of Fontanedo, on a dominant point of the spur
that descends from the north side of Monte Legnone. It was built to protect the territory from incursions
and safeguard the important communication route of the "Wayfarer's Path”, in Robustello. From the
plateau in front, it is possible to admire a vast panorama of the Colico plain and the whole high lake
that amply repays the climb..

Corenno Plinio district

For information:
Public Library - Phone +39 0341 804113

It is a private building constructed on roman foundation with an irregular square plant. The building,
which has crown walls with battlements to protect the round parapet, can be dated between 1360 and
1370. It is a typical castle-enclosure, which is a fortification built as a shelter for the population in case
of attack. The material used for the construction are the same in kind those used for the “galllicus
opus”, such as rocks dug on site or picked up by the lake shore. It has two towers: one is flat (open
inside) towering over the only opening that faces the town, while the other is squared shape towards
the north east corner. The moat surrounding the castle, mentioned in the “Statuto del Comune di
Dervio” of 1389, was eliminated between 1825 and 1830 for the construction of the military road (now
the provincial road 72). The village of Corenno, with its typical alleys carved into the rock, was
subsequently built up from the castle.

• Open on 6th July, 22nd August and 5th September and perhaps even on 3rd October.

The original construction of the church of St. Thomas of Canterbury is probably dated around 12th
century. The building is located near the walls of a castle, large complex built by Andreani family. Over
the centuries it has undergone several restorations: the façade, several times remodelled, now has a
portal dating back to 1698. Around the same era were built two chapels, one dedicated to St. Joseph,
the other to the Virgin Mary. In 1966 various frescoes were brought to light on the side walls of the
nave, dated between '300 and' 500. Of great value are the two funerary monuments, called "Arche",
attached to the façade which, together with the third on the walls of the Castle, are important
examples of Lombard Gothic sculpture.

• Open on 6th July, 22nd August and 5th September and perhaps even on 3rd October.

The Castle of Orezia stands on a cliff overlooking the peninsula of Dervio. The first documentary
sources that speak of the presence of a fortification dates back to 1040, though the construction of the
Castle of Orezia dates back to the 14th century for blockade the road from Valvarrone, which played at
the time an important strategic link with Valsassina. Sources report that the Castle of Orezia was
connected by secret passages leading to the Castle of Corenno and the hamlet of Villa. Currently, only
one tower remains visible, preserved in good condition; while next to it there are still remains of the
fort and of the other towers.

Positioned on a hill above the lake, on the ancient coast road called “Sentiero del Viandante” (the
Wayfarer’s Path), the church was built in the High Middle Age. It seems to be a small roman temple
due to the ruins of a semicircular apse, while the ceiling dates back to the 13th century. The building
hosts an astonishing series of frescoes on the walls, on the triumphal arch and on the lower part of the
presbytery: dating back to 1475-1485.

the area.
Throughout the centuries several sketches dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie (Our Lady of

to the work of the naturalistic Luigi Scanagatta, famous scholar of ornithology, malacology and botany.
He started a collection of sedentary and migratory specimen of birds of this territory. The collection got
more and more important during the 1980s, and it received the status of Civic Museum thanks to a
contribution from Regione Lombardia. After the death of the naturalist, Father Tarcisio Scanagatta
donated to the Museum the important scientific library, letters and the malacology collection belonged
to his late brother Luigi. The library is currently made up of over 1500 volumes, monographs and
pamphlets divided into different categories (Ornithology, Zoology, Malacology, Botany) and there are

Built on the ruins of an ancient monastery, this church has a typical medieval structure with a nave
ending in a semicircular apse. The rebuilding of the structure dates to 1462, as indicated by an
inscription in the church. The frescoes that decorate it date back to 1463 but their attribution remains
uncertain up today. The paintings were restored in 1986; they belong to the Lombard artistic
production of the late Gothic period. The central part of the apse is made up of an "almond" mystical
depicting the Coronation of the Virgin, surrounded by a host of angels; the lower part represents the
Apostles who assist adoring the scene. The plinth is decorated by monochromatic images that
represent the months of the year.

Located near Villa Lurani, it constitutes, together with the other church of Santa Margherita, one of the
most significant religious buildings of primary artistic importance of the ancient Casatenovo. Promoted
and built by Casati family before 1062, it played the stately chapel function of the same family, whose
coat of arms is found in a carved stone, inserted into the bell, presumably from the Romanesque
period. In ancient times there were tombs inside and outside the building: it was Casati knights, three
of which were found in 1720, while widening the access road to the property Lurani. The Renaissance
frescoes that once adorned the walls of the church are now very little: are preserved frescoes of the

walls and the ceiling of the Lay Chapel, on the left of the entrance; of particular importance, the
Madonna in trono con Bambino.
