        Is it Mackinac or Mackinaw?

The name Mackinac or Mackinaw is always pronounced as
“aw”. The area was originally called Michinnimakinong by
the Ojibwa Indians. The word is translated as follows:

MISH - GREAT
INNI - CONNECTING SOUND
MAKI - FAULT
NONG - LAND OR PLACE

The Island has a large crevice or crack and the term was
used by the early Indians as an identifying description to
fellow travelers. The world MICHINNIMAKINONG was later
shortened to Mackinac by the French. The British wrote it
as it was pronounced, thus MACKINAW CITY.

            Heritage Village and Park

2 miles West on W. Central Ave.

In a rural setting reminiscent of the 1880 to 1917 era, the
Mackinaw Area Historical Society has gathered buildings from
our past and assembled them to tell stories of the past.

Visit a Pest House and learn about medical problems and care
at the turn of the 1900 century. Go back to an original one-room
school and a Mennonite church.

This 43-acre park offers open fields surrounded by woods to
find bird species that enjoy the forest edge. This is a fantastic
location for young kids with butterfly nets to run through the tall
fields. They will see a variety of insects, spiders, and some small
mammals.

The Village is open for docent-guided or self-guided audio tours
Saturday thru Monday, Memorial Day through Labor Day.

                   Headlands Nature Trails

You can read the history of the Great Lakes basin at Alexander
Henry Park, but in Headlands you can see this history and its effect.
Stand on the shore bluff of the Nipissing Lakes once the shore some
5000 years ago. Hike down to the shoreline today. See the climatic
change when some plants are in full bloom at the top of the bluff,
still in tight bud next to the cold shore, while the same species is two
weeks or more past blooming still farther inland. The mature beech-
maple-ash woods on the upland presents one of the finest displays of
spring wildflowers anywhere around.

The southern part of the tract is mostly lowland, with the wetland
forest including a little open sedge fen. The shoreline is mostly gravel
and boulders with some bedrock, ornamented with the fossils of past
inhabitants. The tract is big enough, wild enough, and sufficiently
undisturbed to provide homes for bald eagles, osprey, white tail deer,
wild turkeys, coyotes, porcupine, and occasionally a black bear. In
a warm, moist season, autumn produces an extraordinary display of
varied colorful mushrooms.

        Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse

With its impressive buff-colored brick walls, large tower topped
with battlements, and elegant fourth order Fresnel lens, this light-
house-built in 1892 is a source for inspiration. Climb the tower and
breathe in the spectacular view as generations of lighthouse keepers
did before you. Step inside the lighthouse, and hear the Victrola play
pre-World War I tunes in a period-styled sitting room. A shipwreck
video lets you understand the navigational hazards that sparked the
development of lighthouse technology.

                McGulpin Point & Rock
This navigational beacon was built in 1869 and guided mariners of
the Straits until it was replaced by the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse
in 1892. It was a private residence until Emmet County purchased it
in 2009 and now it is open to the public for touring at no charge.

                    What is a Pastie?

A pastie is a meat pie that originated as a meal for the
miners of Cornwall, England in the 1800’s. Wives would
bake meat and vegetables in a crust and wrap it in many
layers of linens or newspaper for their husbands’ lunch.
The Pastie provided a hot and nutritious meal that had
good holding capacity and could be eaten anywhere.

Pasties consist of a crust, similar to that of a pot pie, filled
with diced potatoes, rutabagas, carrots, onions & meat
seasoned to perfection. Most popularly served with gravy,
however, specialty shops offer a variety of options.

      Headlands International Dark Sky Park

Named 1 of the top 25 must-see attractions by Midwest Living Maga-
zine, this internationally recognized Dark Sky Park is one of only
25 in the world!

The Headlands is open 24 hours a day, every day, at no charge.
There is no camping allowed; however, visitors are welcomed and
encouraged to stay out through the night and early morning hours
for night-sky viewing opportunities. You may bring blankets, sleeping
bags, chairs, food, beverages, etc. Plan accordingly and dress for
temperatures 10 degrees below what you expect. The park is located
on the shore of Lake Michigan and is always cooler than inland.

If you are heading to the Headlands on a non-program outing, look
for the signs for Dark Sky Viewing. There is a public trail and viewing
area along the lakeshore. Because the two properties on the acre-
age are rented, they may be occupied at any time. Please respect
the privacy of the occupants.

Look up! Eagles, Hawks & Raptors oh MY!

During the Spring and into June thousands of hawks and
eagles are counted as they fly over the Straits of Macki-
nac on into Canada. 43,000 were counted last spring. This
area is one of the largest raptor crossing routes in North
America. The golden eagles moving North this spring have
the largest tally to date. Viewing is behind the Recreation
Center.

                       1955-2020

Mackinaw City Chamber of Commerce was founded in
1955 by area businessmen. They gathered at the Hotel
Nokomis to discuss how to keep visitors in Mackinaw City
once the Mackinac Bridge opened in 1957. Their fears
were unfounded as most travelers stopped for food,
souvenirs or lodging before continuing North. Today
Mackinaw City is known as a top family destination.
Enjoy the clean air, clear waters, dark skies, real history,
lighthouses and all things Pure Michigan!
